Colour Haze - 2006 - Tempel
Colour Haze is a stoner/psychedelic rock group from Munich, Germany fronted by Stefan Koglek.
Formed in the mid-nineties, Colour Haze is one of the oldest German stoner outfits, and have since then become one of the flagships of the German stoner rock scene. Since 1999 the lineup has been stable, with Stefan Koglek playing guitar and handling vocals, Manfred Merwald on drums and Philipp Rasthofer playing bass-guitar. Emerging from a sound heavily influenced by Black Sabbath on their first records, they shifted to a more improvised, jam-based sound, culminating in songs topping twenty minutes on the self-titled Colour Haze (2004).

Cloroform - 2003 - Hey You Let's Kiss
To many readers of this site, it might come as a surprise that there are good Norwegian bands that don't play some form of heavy metal. Cloroform is a good example: Take three jazz and rock'n'roll boys with a screwy sense of humour and who obviously have more than a passing interest in guys like John Zorn and Mr Bungle, and then let them start a band. What is the result? 'Tis somewhat hard to say really. I won't use that horrid "avant garde" term, as it's becoming quite a bloated carcass of a term these days. Think of a mix of filthy old porno soundtracks (like the brilliant "Shit Sushi" 7"), some upbeat instrumental rock'n'roll ala Bomboras, a good amount of fun and games, some good jazz-musician types, then smack it all together and throw it through a cartoon-filter. You'd probably not get this, but it might not be too far off.

Capricorns - 2005 - Ruder Forms Survive
When I open the booklet of 'Ruder Forms Survive' I see a guy wearing a mask of a dog while posing for a band picture. This in combination with the fact that Capricorns released their debut album on Rise Above made me nervous about what to expect. While listening to this album everything fell into place. Capricorns made a combination of rough rudimentary punk/hardcore like Neurosis did on their debut 'Pain of Mind' and combined this rough forms with modern spacy post rock landscapes not unlike Pelican and the father of this genre: Neurosis. The cross point of these styles bring you back at times to the stoner and sludge territorial. All the tracks are almost instrumental except for "The First Broken Promise". The absurd vocals on this song are done by singer Eugene Robinson from the band Oxbow. His vocals are the stranger in the land that Capricorns shows. Some will call his vocals overdone but it brings a smile on your face between the serious music that is created by Capricorns. After this track doomy punk riffs start in “1440:Exit Wargasmatron” and later out spanned riffs follow up. The combination creates a specific tense between your speakers but the tense is not kept as tight as elastic on a package of flyers. The tightness in these songs is comparable to high voltage cables in the field. But as you all know there is always danger when attaching a high voltage cable and this same idea relates to this Britain band. On the first superficial listening session it seems that boring stuff is produced in the House of Capricorns, but the riffs on the album have an indefinable force. Now it’s time to put this force into remarkable songs like the closing song "793AD: The Harrying of the Heathen".

Earthtone9 - 2000 - arc'tan'gent
Arc'Tan'Gent is the last, and greatest, album of Earthtone 9's short-lived career.
The dynamics the band display are incredible. They are capable of shifting from emotional beauty to calculated math rock or from sweeping melodies to brutal hardcore, and it all sounds like a natural progression - never contrived.
The music is often very dense and draws up bleak, perplexing soundscapes. Elsewhere, the haunting melodies and almost tribal drumming create a dream-like atmosphere.
The album seems to become more and more intense, the further in you get. It truly draws you in - once it grabs you, it won't let go. Opener, 'Tat Twam Asi', is the stand out track, as it constantly changes and evolves, building up to a fantastic chorus. From there the album never settles. The following two tracks are not only catchy, but brilliantly crafted and complex slices of melodic metal. 'Approx. Purified', on the other hand, is sheer metalcore might. It then goes on to the softest track on the album: 'Walking Day' is quietly understated progressive rock. 'Star Damage for Beginners' is simply intense, again built around a superb chorus. 'Ni9e - This is the Sound...' is a short instumental track before the dark, murky 'Yellow Fever', which features Liberty 37 frontman Ishmael Lewis on vocals. 'Alpha Hi' is a much more straight forward rocking track and the album finishes with the epic closer, 'Binary 101'.
The band's talent is simply unique. From the inventive riffs, through Karl Middleton's original vocals to the imaginative drumming of Simon Hutchby (which I believe to be almost as good as that of Tool's Danny Carey).
If you aren't persauded yet, you should be. This is one of the greatest metal albums of all time. Those people who say Britain lacks any great bands: idiots.

Devin Townsend - 1998 - Infinity
Aside from Mr. Devin Townsend's proclivity to appear naked on album covers, the very talented Canadian musician has done nothing but show an immense amount of musical talent and ability in his various projects. His most familiar project, Strapping Young Lad, is a portrait of irrational emotions set to a bombastic musical landscape while Ocean Machine was an ususual attempt to capture the music the oceans themselves might make were they given a couple guitars and a a microphone. Townsend's proper solo release, Infinity is not infinitely different than the other two ventures, which is reassuring as it offers exactly the same amount of allure as the others.
Since the same man writes and creates the music and vision for the various projects, it is no suprise that Infinity has that familiar Devy crush and symphonic devourment of the ears. However, Infinity is a bit more honed and sheds a bit of the angst for a more introspective look into the artist's heart. Townsend's vocals range from very straightforward and melodic, such as the catchy "Christeen" to painfully torn as on "Soul Driven". But his vocals are only part of the picture as the music throughout goes through a variety of stages, all building towards the climax on "Unity". (Yes, "Noise Pink Bubbles" is, for all intents and purposes, a "hidden" track that is an aside from the crux of the album.) "Truth" begins the album with an affirmation of music and chants of "hallelujah" before segueing into "Christeen". The next two tracks, "Bad Devil" and "War", are surprising in their ability to rock and boogie down. "Bad Devil" is nearly a heavy metal gospel track and is guaranteed to shake your little booty. The midsection of the album becomes a lot more convoluted, dense and troubled. As individual songs they would not hold up but in the scheme of how the songs work as a cohesive whole, they're very important to how the emotions are wrenched by Infinity. As with Ocean Machine's Biomech, the album moves through a variety of stages before reaching the final resolution on "Unity". And as stated before, the actual closer on the album is "Noisy Pink Bubbles", which doesn't fit the overall big picture, but ends up closing things out on a great note.
Infinity is the sort of record that will initially capture you with its more instantly accessible moments at the beginning of the record and if you allow it to play as a whole, its magic becomes insurmountable. Ultimately fulfilling albums such as Infinity are quite difficult to come by, so anyone who is looking for a meaningful and extremely well conceived and executed record best be looking for a copy of this.

Cult Of Luna - 2003 - Cult of Luna
Imagine that MESHUGGAH and ENTOMBED had a small brother, who'd try to copy them, but who'd also listened too much to KATATONIA and to Hardcore. Well, this small brother is none other than CULT OF LUNA, who have a massive and heavy sound, riffs that can be slow in a doom kind, or slow in an old-school Swedish death metal style, and with very raw and Deathcore vocals. The whole thing is very very precise, and will definitely make an impression on you, even though we can still reproach them to make songs that are sometimes a bit too long, for an album that can get oppressive. But oppression is so cool anyway…

Electric Wizard - 2004 - Dopethrone
One of my favourite doom/stoner/psychedelic albums. Similar in tone to YOB, they take doom and mix a lot of psychedelic into their music. Lots of low ends on this album.

wow so much new stuff... i'm digging colour haze right now. they remind me of kyuss, but i like ch's vocals more.

Estradasphere - 2000 - It's Understood
It's Understood is Estradasphere's first studio album. It was released on Mimicry Records on June 26, 2000.
Notably, the first track on the album, "Hunger Strike", sets the tone of Estradasphere by covering a wide range of musical genres. The song is just less than twenty minutes long and is the longest studio recording of an Estradasphere song.
Tracks 6-9 are songs that form the four part composition titled "The Princes of Xibalba".
Tracks 2 and 11 are not performed, but electronically sequenced by Tim Smolens and parody the music from popular video games such as Super Mario Bros.
Track 12 was recorded at a violin recital for Estradasphere member Timb Harris. All other tracks were recorded at ROHYPONOL_Studios911 in 1999.
Miscellanea
* The "mystery rap" George performs on track 3 ("The Transformation") can be seen on Estradasphere's video release These Are the Days as George is sitting in a hot tub. For the track, these vocals were heavily filtered and barely understandable, but in the video, the original vocals are clear.
* The introduction and title to "The Transformation" come from a home video made by members of the Estradasphere circus. The video can be seen on These Are The Days.
* The sound clip at the end of "The Transformation" comes from the Rob Reiner mockumentary film This Is Spinal Tap. The clip is heard after Dave Murray performs a drum solo while the clip itself refers to one of many drummers from the fictional band Spinal Tap who seemingly and spontaneously combust.
