MSSF organized several forays but quite unfortunately they failed to collect any Psilocybes. They did manage to collect three active Gymnopilus species - G. luteofolius, (very blue) G. luteocarneus (also very bluing) and G. sapienus (which did not blue).
Several shroomery members arrived on site and immediately recognized the severity of the situation; a fungus fair was in progress and an entire genus was not represented. An emergency task force was formed to rectify the problem.
It didn't take them long:

Psilocybe cyanofibrillosa:

Suimush photographing P. cyanofibrillosa:

Some people call it P. cyanofriscosa:

Microscopically, it is P. cyanescens.

Do we even have P. cyanescens in California?

The type collection was in kew gardens, the European version might be a bit different.
Here are some P. cyanofriscosa long exposures.

A post fungus fair chocolate party. This was incredibly cool, we laid down, closed our eyes, and fed each other the worlds most delicious chocolate concoction which had at least 50 ingredients and took the hosts hours to make.

They also made a chocolate drink with raw cacoa powder, spices, honey, and brandy which was easily the best thing I have ever tasted.

i have collected specimens in the bay area by santa cruz, and in the north state by humboldt, and both time they looked nothing like your cyanofriscosa pictures, and much like the cyanescens being found in washington state.

he knows, hes talking about the california/PNW cyans and how they possibly may be a little different from the type collection found in Europe. Something stamtes mentioned for sec after the fair.

Alan... your post confuses the hell out of me. You refer to the mushrooms twice as Ps. cyanofibrillosa and twice as "Ps. cyanofriscosa"... What gives? I hope Paul wasn't that convincing.
I'm inclined to call it Ps. cyanescens IF anything... Or a phenotypic variant of that species, but NOT Ps. cyanofibrillosa.

i never believed they were fibs. I was skeptical about them being fibs after i got them ID as fibs at the fair in 04. Even after i saw pictures they just looked off to me.
It all clicked in 05 when any real documentation came out.
Plus there is the potecncy factor which really settled it for me.
for now they are friscosas to me, that may change when the documented name comes out. It all depends on how cool it sounds to me.

thats what stamets was saying. due to nutrients and differences in substrate the morphology can change. but it seems to me, and this is just an assumption, that microscopically it would be more stable than macroscopically, so being that the "friscosas" are more similar to cyans under a microscope than fibs than it seems like it would be more likely to be a morphological variation of cyans as opposed to fibs.
But that still doesnt explain why they co exist in the same patches, because if it was a morphological respose based on substrate wouldnt all the specimens be consistant with one type? which leads people to further belive that it is its own species.

Two experts say they are very close to P. cyanescens and one expert says that they are very close to P. cyanofibrillosa.
I will do my best to honor and respect all three experts opinions by using the P. cyanescens binomial two thirds of the time and the P. cyanofibrillosa one third of the time.

Mmm fungus fair. T'was fun. I was thinking about shouting for shroomery people, then I decided I was too hung over to deal with anything. Fuck alcohol. Neat exhibits though, It was cool to look at shit through the microscope and be around fungi loving people. When I heard an old lady talk about hunting it made me smile. I'm sure she wasn't talking about psychedelics but still.

LoL. Yeah, shouting out unusual internet names is not such a good strategy unless you are keen on embarrassment...
Alan tried that, and despite the fact that Tahoe was standing feet away, he couldn't make out what alan said, so he didn't respond.

A little rain sure does work better then a lot of manual waterings Suspect cyan? It passed the test in the feild but not the test once we got home. It had some bluing on it but i think it soaked up some blue form the others
The ggp Haul a few cyans
a big one from a local patch
Some more of the patch. Ps gave me some advice on getting it to flush again

Unknown mycelium I hope it is what i think it is.
Hopefully cyans, the dry weather has taken its toll

Possible northen species from astoria or. I trashed a contamed jar a birdseed here.
