You didnt pressure cook any of your jars???
I havnt done grains before, but as far as im aware, a pressure cooker is a requirement when working with grains, even rye flour.
The grains will contain, endospores that simply steaming cannot get rid of.
Steaming only works with BRF jars and liquid cultures.
Correct me if im wrong someone, but im sure grains need PC

you can do small amounts of grains like rye or WBS by steaming if you grind them to flour first as per pftek.

I always pressure cooked my rye but I don't think you have to necessarily I would boil the rye grains alone first to get them to absorb the maximum amount of water. Strain them and then put in a jar or bag or whatever and proceeded to pressure cook. But you could steam or boil them at that point. As for the birdseed I just soaked them over night sunflower seeds and all. I never take out the sunflower seeds. I guess I'm just lazy. Then I would strain, jar, and cook. The flour doesn't really make a difference either but it doesn't swell up as much when it is flour as opposed to rye kernels. I have always heard though that people never have much luck with rye flour. Here is a tip too if your looking for brown rice flour you can jimmy up your own and its cheaper I almost think it is more affective, but at any grocery store in the regular rice aisle you will find straight long grain branch rice for like 50 cents to a dollar a bag. Anyway just throw it in a blender and grind it up in to a flour. It won't be perfect flour unless you find something better to grind it up but it works great.
