Save the Shrooms!
    #7527938 - 10/17/07 02:07 PM (2 years, 1 month ago)

In a giant leap backwards, the Dutch ministers of Health and Justice of Holland seek to ban the Magic Mushroom, which up until now has a legal status in Holland.

Many people protest this decision, which has not yet gone into effect.

One of the organizations that protests the ban is www.reddepaddo.nl (Red De Paddo = Save The Shroom) and one of their actions is a petition.

They asked us to help them, so let's all sign the petition to protest illegalization of the Shroom in Holland.

Your protest will be sent to the Tweede Kamer, the governing body of the nation. The example text reads:

--------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Governor,

I was astonished to learn that plans are being made to illegalize shrooms. It is incomprehensible to me that these plans are being made before the RIVM report has been made. At this point in time it seems to have been based on sensational news in the media and the policies of other EU nations.

For a number of reasons we consider a ban on mushrooms in Holland to be entirely inappropriate. We hereby request you to hear our reasons and reconsider your decision.

Why would a prohibition of hallucinogenic mushrooms be so wrong?

People have the right to decide how they choose regarding their body and mind.

Mushrooms are not addictive, as demonstrated by the risk assessment reports by the Coordinationpoint Assessment and Monitoring of new drugs (CAM), which is part of the RIVM.

Nobody has ever died because of an overdose of mushrooms.

Mushrooms are literally mind-expanding, to take peoples freedom to expand their mind is not appropriate in a democratic country.

Mushrooms are a natural product that grows across Europe, users could go looking for mushrooms in the forest with the risk of picking the wrong, poisonous kinds (this has been alleged to lead to fatalities in France).

Mushrooms generally provide a personal, mystical, insightful and spiritual experience. Research by the American institution MAPS dating from 2006 has demonstrated this.

With the right information and user advice the risk for a "bad trip" is minimal.

Through several simple measures the sale of mushrooms can be regulated through around 180 smartshops of good reputation.

Mushrooms after the ban will be sold on the street, without advice or user directions. The number of accidents will increase.

Except among young tourists the use of mushrooms has caused no problems whatsoever. Irresponsible use by tourists can be prevented through the by Job Cohen proposed Three Days Plan.

The same dealers will besides mushrooms offer cocaine, XTC and other synthetic drugs.

Illegal substances are very attractive to youths.

Raids on drug producers are costing the government a lot of money without decreasing use or production.

Mushrooms are easily grown at home from spores, making it harder to ban them. Let the government invest their money and efforts into more important matters.

With kind regards,

----------------------------------------------------------------

Please take part in this action to Save The Shroom and sign the petition. All you are asked for is your name (naam), city of residence (woonplaats) and an email address.

If you want to do more, you can inform your pro-mushroom friends, let it be known on other mushroom related forums and so on.

Let's help the Dutch shroomers fight this ban!

If I sign it and put down Syracuse or Columbus as my city is it just going to be disregarded because I'm not Dutch?

Wow, you mean really, really stupid people such as drug users? My point being control by one group over another is never a good thing. Personal responsibility. Instead of outlawing mushrooms, they should be thanking mushrooms for helping Darwin along and getting rid of some unfit breeders.

Under NO circumstances should you attempt to falsify who you are or where you are from on the petition!!! The petition will NO DOUBT be scrutinized (by opponents who will look carefully at it) and all the efforts of those who legitimately have an interest and got on board to support the petition will be tainted by those actions! TRUST ME!!! I have been very involved politically and it will be hurtful NOT helpful!

Although it may carry less weight to be an American who supports the continued legal status of mushrooms, the BEST way to support our like-minded bretheren is to remind the government there in Holland that they will lose valuable tourism income from LOTS and LOTS of Americans! Politicians are VERY sensitive to harming their constituents economy! THAT (as an American) is the best way to bring pressure from so remote a locale. Trust me, they'll get the message.

Regards,
N.B.

I don't think that will be a problem, since you care enough about shrooms in holland to respond, worldwide responses will only strengthen the position of Holland's pro-mushroom lobby.

But what we really don't need is false responses, as they weaken the petition. Unless you live in a city of 5 people, naming your city won't compromise your privacy.

Please note the reason they are attempting to pass these types of laws is to
keep idiot Americans from visiting for the sole purpose of getting stoned out
of their gourd and falling off bridges.

This petition is applicable to the 1% of active board members whom actually live
in Holland.

You'll have as much luck affecting this vote by putting a serrano up your pooper

Well theres more than that

Since last friday over 25.000 people have signed the petition.

Also a lot of Dutch VIPs have spoken out against the ban, including people as diverse as the mayor of Amsterdam, representatives of the most prominent drug addiction  bureaus, several politicians and a standup comedian.

A statistic: in Holland which has a population of 16 million, half a million portions of shrooms are legally sold each year.

I find it weird that you'd find that weird.

America is a media powerhouse(video and audio at least) other english speaking countries not so much.

it's fitting that people who speak english as a second, or third language have an American accent.

back on topic, even if shrooms are changed to an illegal schedule or whatever, the apparent 'lax drug scene(historically and culturally) in the Nederlands in general leads me to believe that there would be no shroom shortage for those that seek.

I'm not against legal shrooming, but to support fact - Shrooms can have such an effect as to cause someone to try and "fly" off a bridge. For example (I know it's not really the same thing, but) when you have uncontrollable laughter or grinning on shrooms, does that make you stupid, because you can't even control your facial muscles? No.

I would say that anyone who eats too many shrooms is uneducated on Psilocybe mushrooms (you could substitute the word dumass if you want). You should always safely dose mushrooms. They pack more power than you would think, and with enough consumption, that uncontrollable grin could easily be escalated into a "I'm a Bald Eagle" mentality.

> but to support fact - Shrooms can have such an effect as to cause someone to try and "fly" off a bridge.

So can a bad day at work. Alcohol can have such an effect as to cause someone to crash their car, yet it isn't illegal. Datura can have such an effect as to cause someone to cut off their penis, yet it isn't illegal. Nicotine is one of the most toxic substances known, yet it isn't illegal. Personal responsibility and education, not prohibition and propaganda, please.

> I would say that anyone who eats too many shrooms is uneducated on Psilocybe mushrooms

What is too many? I would say anyone that sits in rush hour traffic is uneducated on the effects of toxic fumes, yet I don't see a push to outlaw internal combustion engines.

> They pack more power than you would think

More power than I would think? Doubtful. Perhaps more power that you you think. Again, personal responsibility and education.

I want to be clear on this...by all means sign the petition if you support it, no matter what your nationality...just don't say you are from the Netherlands when you are not! Just like here, they have drivers licenses, registered voters and a mail delivery system. If you think that your misrepresentation of a Holland address will go undiscovered when scrutinized, you are WRONG, and that will erode the impoact of the 25,000 legitimate signatures.

LET the response be world-wide! Nothing wrong with that!

It is a fact that every year a million people in the world die by suicide. Thats one in every six thousand people. I don't think she "flew" off a bridge but that this was a suicide.
Tragic, but unavoidable.

I wasn't supporting illegalizing shrooms. I was only saying that eating shrooms, and jumping off a bridge doesn't neccessarily mean that person was stupid, just ignorant of the effects that shrooms produce. If they were legal, more people would have a shroom education.

And that's the only point I was trying to make.

No.
It's the individual's responsibility to instruct himself regarding the effects of mushrooms, nobody should be obliged to do that, even if they were legal.

I think as far as "shroom education" goes, most people get all the facts throughout their drug using. I mean there's not too many people who live a straight and sober life, and one day out of the blue, they see someone selling shrooms and devour the whole bag on instinct.

Most people hear "stories" and warnings from shrooms prior to eating them, or even finding them, I mean, how else would you become interested in them?

In my opinion people choose not to listen to what people say, and only hear what they want to hear. Then when they have the almighty mushrooms engulfing their senses they wern't as perpared as they thought.

All this ban is going to do is give police more reason to harass, and give people access to "harder" not as available drugs......I mean what "drug dealer" sells nothing but mushrooms?

And more than that... how can one expect for freedom on one hand, and on the other expect that "they" should educate people on how to use mushrooms... which means that we need a baby sitter.
Freedom comes with personal responsibility and just because certain individuals are irresponsible doesn't mean that something should be interdicted.

precisely. when a person causes a car accident for example then he is held personally accountable, and not the rest of the drivers on the road.

this legal philosophy that "if one person screws up then everyone else will be punished" is exactly why the law system has become so complex nowadays.

seeing cases like this i often think that laws ought to apply to the individual and his history instead of having them automatically be extended to the rest of the citizenry.

I'm assuming the letter isn't to be delivered in English. If so, I'd change the word 'shrooms' to 'mushrooms' and not talk of 'illegalize', but use instead the correct term of 'criminalize'.

The article I read said a girl had jumped out a window, thinking she could fly, and somebody else had driven his/her car wildly, nearly hitting several people.

It seems that good approach to take if this is the 'evidence' they give of mushroom's danger would be to research drunken driving and other alcohol related accidents during the same time period. I would assume there has been a hundred times as many deaths and injuries due to alcohol, yet no drive is underway to criminalize possession/use of booze. A case could then be made that the ban on mushrooms is purely political, thus should be defeated.

This is intimidation, but something that stands in one's power to disallow. From what I observed, many people actually feel guilty for using drugs so what laws do is that they adapt to this general psychology to be more efficient. So changing the way we think will automatically make the laws change as well.

The ban culture seems to be catching on...

The Government of TamilNadu in South India just banned the use of camera phones, ipods, etc. in schools upto 12th grade.  The reason given is it would distract students from their studies. :nut:

I say governments all over seem to be caught in a time wrap.

I'm not going to note something that has no basis in reality. :sorry:

The 17 year old girl was French, and she was also drunk at the time. While I cannot be certain, common sense implies that most of the foreign drug tourism in Amsterdam is from European countries, such as France and Britain (Britian being the main cause of concern).

Health concerns and suicide as a result of mushrooms is an extremely isolated occurence. When 500,000 doses of mushrooms are sold in a year, and there are 128 or so ambulance calls relating to mushrooms, that is statistically insignfigant. In fact, that is .0003%.

Anyone who has attained a reasonable, rudimentary understanding of the real situation knows that the decision to plan on criminalizing mushrooms has nothing to do with any problems relating from mushrooms. Politicial pressure from other European Union countries (Britian is a likely culprit), coupled with a prevalence of Christian conservatism is the underlying reasons for the call for the ban. Media hysteria plays a role as well I'm sure, just like it has in Britian, regarding all of the hysteric propaganda regarding super skunk.

The mayor of Amsterdam proposed a three day waiting period before the transaction could be completed, as well as education materials being given out in the mean time, as well as an age limit. Clearly, as a man responsible for the budget for the city, he knows just how important tourism is to Amsterdam's economy. If you think this has anything to do with ridding the city of drug tourists, then you might as well eat that serrano up another's asshole. :what:

Are you retarded, or simply incredibly short-sighted? If some kind of physical limitation is responsible, then I apologize. :smirk: Drug policy affects our community in a very real manner, no matter where the matter has sprung up. In fact, considering that we are talking about the Netherlands here, criminalization of mushrooms poses a serious threat to the hope for progress and sanity in regards to drug use everywhere, as the Netherlands is traditionally and widely recognized as the most liberal country regarding drug usage. There is too many organizations and politicians that are going rabid waiting for the opportunity to proclaim "See? Legalization didn't work there, and they tried it for so long! Drugs need to be criminalized".

Let's try to use our brains here, please.

Apparently the fervant feedback they have been receiving is having its influence. A friend of a friend has spoken with people in smartshops, and apparently they've been informed that there will be at least two more weeks before a decision is going to be made. Clearly there is an incredible amount of resistance to this baseless political maneuver, and the resistance has on its side intelligence, cold hard facts, and the backing of a lot of money from tourism. Maybe we can focus on supporting a worthy and crucial cause, instead of being ignorant fools.

Protest against ban on magic mushrooms

AMSTERDAM – Roughly ten thousand Dutch citizens have sent an e-mail to the government via the website www.reddepaddo.nl (Save the Magic Mushroom). In their e-mails the protesters called on the government to not ban the sale of hallucinogenic mushrooms.

The action group that set up the website on Friday reported this on Monday.
People visiting the website can send an e-mail to Justice Minister Ernst Hirsch Ballin, Health Minister Ab Klink and the political parties that are in favour of banning the sale of magic mushrooms.

The government announced on Friday that it wants to ban the sale of the drug.

Lissen, you UnderRoo fuck. I'm a yank, and all I did while I was tripping in Amsterdam was a) Stare at a wall with my roommate for an hour. Then we got up and did something on the town. b) Stood on a corner in the RLD next to a canal, while my roomie got a prostitute. Had some shady people offer me cocaine in a bathroom and I was verbally abusive and told them to fuck off. They ran away.

I saw no one throw themselves off of a bridge.

I REALLY like the public pee stalls with four urinals. That's just practical as fuck.

Also, I liked the bum that was masturbating in public slumped against a wall on a main thoroughfare.

And just what, exactly, is it about cannabis that you don't find sacred?

Not to nitpick, I actually agree with you about selling entheogenics in general. I prefer trading whenever possible - I swear it makes the high better. And guilt-free. I'm just curious as to why you make an exception for marijuana when it is certainly seen as sacred by the Saddhus, the Sufis, the Rastas, and me.

Why would buying mushrooms make you feel guilty?

It doesn't. But I always feel better about entheogens when they are:

Picked/grown by one's own labor
Given/recieved freely
Traded for other entheogens.

Don't you?

Money is what I feel guilty about - it's all dirty and bloody. Especially here in the USA.

Money are not dirty and bloody, they are just a tool. Some people who use them are "dirty and bloody".
There's nothing wrong with buying shrooms.

If it helps, I hate paying for anything with US dollars. I love trading all sorts of things - I traded a typewriter for a steam-cleaner once. I work at a second-hand guitar store that has "Trade" in the name. I also prefer home-grown vegetables.

I think you all are misunderstanding my post.

Tell me that the acid your friend gave you wasn't better than the acid you bought from a stranger at the concert. Tell me it wasn't a more mystical experience due to the labor your friend put into making it, the relationship you have with him, and the generosity with which he bestowed it to you.

I certainly signed the petition, if that's what all this uproar is about. So did Shamantra, who was the one actually speaking against the mushroom trade as it is done in Amsterdam.

Smoke a bowl and read it again.

I don't consider any drugs to be sacred, they're just chemicals that get you high.

Nope, I saw no difference.
The difference comes from what you believe it to be. If you believe that you friend's acid is more "spiritual" than the one you bought at a concert, it is because the self suggestion.

And what exactly is the difference between trading "stuff" or money? Money are a trade means as well.

yeah i would normally agree with that, but mushrooms is the only drug that has given me a divine experience, so to me i find mushrooms to be diffrent than any other drugs, its sacred because it gives me a very diffrent religion-like experience than lets say LSD or mescaline. but in the end of the day, its just another tryptamine )

Ahh, I am very into world religions, ancient religions, mythology etc. So I, by habit, actually *do* try to take every religion into consideration when assessing the sanctity of any mind-altering substance or situation. Thus I consider alcohol, opium, coca, etc. all to be equally sacred. I have never felt one substance (in its most natural form) to be more or less sacred than others. Some are definitely more pleasant, others more difficult. This is a difference in thinking between us that I have no problems with. Thanks for answering my question as to why cannabis was singled-out.

I'm not saying it isn't.  In fact, I'd have to agree with this WHOLE-HEARTEDLY.  You summed up my entire point.  Since set and setting are everything - I prefer to not have my trip include funding foreign wars, oil-giants and the war on drugs.

Well, when trading stuff, you leave the IRS out of the loop.  This works with illegal items as well as legal ones, since you had to pay income tax on the money you earned - that you are now spending on drugs.  The taxes, in the US at least, go to fund some of the most horrible atrocities ever committed.  From Guantanamo to Abu Gharib - your tax dollars at work.

IMO either nothing is sacred or everything is. It's all attitude rather than substance.

No that was a senseless comment made out of boredom caused by the lack of compelling threads in P&S.

Well I tried to mail them but I received an email back, telling me that the delivery has failed.

All this time I've loved you
And never known your face
All this time I've missed you
And searched this human race
Here is true peace
Here my heart knows calm
Safe in your soul
Bathed in your sighs

Protesters in bid to save magic mushies

http://www.theage.com.au/news/World/Protesters-in-bid-to-save-magic-mushies/2007/10/28/1193506334295.html

Protesters turned out on Amsterdam's central Dam Square on Saturday, hoping to stop the government from banning magic mushrooms and asking to "save the 'shrooms".

Carrying banners reading "When will they ban bread?" and "Boss of your own brain", more than 100 people, some wearing hats resembling the bright red cap of the popular fly agaric variety, protested to keep hallucinogenic mushrooms legal.

After several incidents involving tourists - in March, a French teenager jumped to her death from a bridge after taking mushrooms - the Dutch government plans to ban them.

Arno Adelaars, author of a book on magic mushrooms, said this would only drive users underground and what was needed instead was better information on how to use mushrooms properly.

"It's only foreigners who have this problem, the Dutch don't because they have good information," he said.

"Amsterdam is like a pilgrimage for youngsters in Europe - they come here to get high in all kinds of ways.

"The typical young tourist that comes here drinks an awful lot of beer, smokes an awful lot of grass, and then takes mushrooms. That's the recipe for disaster."
