Someone should take the time to compile a list of all the bands in this topic. Someone other than me of course

Man would you mind breaking this down into which bands are say like Pelican and what bands are like Boris? I'm in love with bands like Pelican, 5ive, Tides, Humanfly .etc, but cannot stand bands like Boris!

Everyone should definitely check out Manatees and Tephra.

Well Boris is very diverse and some of their songs are great but I know what you mean.

Check out this one, it's less punk and more power:

Boris - More Echoes, Touching Air Landscape

I think sludge is the best too, make sure to check out Supercontinent, Windmills, Lent0, Ufomammut, Bossk and Cave.

Hello all, I am new here. I found this forum when I was looking for some new avantgarde metal stuff.
So what's your favourite avant-garde (metal) albums of 2008 ??

heres my list:

Virus - The Black Flux
dark surreal rock

Fans of Ved buens ende knows... and who dont know, immediately give it a spin! it is my album of the year.

Transcending Bizarre? - The Serpent's Manifolds
avant-garde symphonic black metal

Very strong stuff!

Akphaezya - Anthology II
avantgarde/progressive metal, some jazz elements

Fans of early Atrox should get this, it is brilliant.

Sculptured - Embodiment
progressive metal

very sophisticated stuff, gret drumming, it needs more listens to get into. but it is great.

Pin-up went down - 2 Unlimited
avant-garde

Great followers of Carnival in Coal

I've heard a lot of another stuff (Atrox, Enslaved, Ihsahn) but in my view upwards mentioned albums are my favourite.
Does anybody has any suggestions what I should check out?

Twin Zero - The Tomb To Every Hope

For anyone who has more than a passing interest in the British metal underground, the coming together of Twin Zero a few short years ago could not have gone unnoticed. Featuring former members from a range of diverse, mostly respected and often criminally ignored bands (such as earthtone9, Vex Red, Subvert and The Blueprint), they were an entity that promised much. Their 2005 debut full-length, "Monolith," delivered more than anyone had hoped. The split EP that Twin Zero put out afterwards with the stunningly beautiful sounds of 27 was even better still. Which brings us to new album "The Tomb Of Every Hope" and bang up to date.

The short gaps between releases are obvious proof that Twin Zero are on something of a creative high, and it’s resulting in some of the best songs any of these musicians have ever put their names to throughout their joint musical histories. Whereas, say, earthtone9 were never quite capable of achieving the high standards they desired, time and practice has obviously brought with it the skills and dedication this group needed to re-create the massive sounds floating around inside their heads.

"The Tomb" more than surpasses everything Tome Zero have put out so far, and they’ve clearly gotten a lot more comfortable with their unique sound. Unafraid to move around and explore to see just where the boundaries are, you find a lot happening here that you might not expect. Not all the lines are strictly linear or connected. Along with the expected prog metal they add mantra-style vocals, repetition, droning passages and epic, cavernous moments.

The album is not shy on dynamics. The apex of "Home" is huge, while in stark contrast to the churning, lurching riff that adorns the crown of "Acceptance Of The End," "Retreat" threatens to overpower you in a landslide of honesty and emotion. As big as they can sound, Twin Zero are not afraid to strip it bare when the mood calls for it. "Acceptance Of The End" is as lonely as the title suggests. Karl Middleton’s voice sits lightly atop an accompaniment of acoustic guitar and mourning, gently weeping strings.

That Twin Zero do not fit in with any of their contemporaries, competitors or any of the bands on Undergroove's current roster should not surprise anyone familiar with their pedigree. And while the British underground is at the moment lifting the manhole lid a little so that we can see the excellent talent hidden just below the surface (Sikth, Bring Me The Horizon, Johnny Truant), it’s Twin Zero who are the most intriguing. Here they’ve created a constantly moving piece of work that engages the listener. This is the new prog. If you like Dredg, Khoma, Cynic or Aerogramme, it’s well-advised that you check this out.

(I'm loving this album and figured I should share it - if anyone finds a link to their earlier album Monolith, please post it).

Anyone have any Wolves in the Throne Room that they wouldn't mind sharing? I've been dying to hear that.

And if it's not too much to ask some Windmills by the Ocean, the previous upload has expired.

Thanks a ton!
