Knots? Aborts? (pic)
    #7466802 - 09/29/07 11:47 AM (5 years, 8 months ago)

Been doing a good bit of reading about this subject but I just wanted to get some confirmation. Here's a picture I took of a casing after 1st flush was picked:

Sorry some parts are blurry -- I shot this with a macro lens because i wanted to get close, but it has ridiculously low depth of field.

Are those white ball-like shapes hyphal knots? I thought they were, but they didn't quite look lke the ones RR had on his money shot. If they are, how many typically will turn into a pin/full-size mushroom? They are all over my casing!

Those two pins on the left and right have very dark heads -- are they aborts? There are a couple of other pins in a similar stage of development that have heads that look more brownish. I'm reluctant to pick them because I don't want to mess with the knots that have formed around them. If they have aborted, how bad for the rest of the crop would it be to just leave them?

Thanks for any advice!

I know you hear this on just about every thread, but that sure does look like cobweb taking hold of the casing layer. Those pins look to be aborting in my experience. That's just me though. I would keep a close eye on the growth that's covering the casing layer. And yes, those do look like hyphal knots.

I've been keeping a pretty close eye on the tub and the main reason I suspect that it isn't cobweb is that it doesn't seem to be spreading. Isn't cobweb supposed to spread extremely quickly?

Sure enough, there are some areas of the casing that look a little suspect, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it's just wispy mycelium. I have my 3% H2O2 ready in case tomorrow morning shows otherwise...

Anybody have experience with how detrimental aborts are to the rest of the crop if not picked? Right now it's knotting all over and I'm hoping not to disturb the casing by going after a handful of small aborts.

I think those pins are aborts because of the way they go inwards at the top and the heads are black. I'd pick them and keep'em otherwise they might rot. And it can't help having lots of dead stuff on your casing.

The white blobs are knotts and most will turn into pins but many pins will abort. Impossible to say how many, depends on environmental factors and possibly genetics. The "forest of shrooms" with lots of pins and few aborts is the cultivator's holy grail.

Get a spray bottle and dilute the 3% H202 to 1.5%. Mist the solution in the air and let it gently fall on your casing layer. I can't tell how big your grow is, but just a mild misting will do. Do this 2 times a day. I just overcame cobweb in my casing layer by doing that. My grow slowed down just a little, but right now I'm seeing the knots turn into pins and I'm about 3 days from harvesting my 1st flush.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll try to get those aborts out with a hemostat...

However, I'm pretty sure there isn't any cobweb. I dropped a bit of H2O2 on some spots that looked fuzzy and suspicious and they did not melt away like it would have if it were cobweb. Nothing seems to have spread overnight either. Maybe just wispy mushroom mycelium?

Could be just thin mycelium plus i wouldnt want to spray it at this stage as those primordia are very sensitive right now.

I don't see any obvious cobweb. You also don't need to mess with the aborts until you pick the flush. They'll turn black, but won't rot or ruin the project before it's time to pick the rest off.
