Hi all....new around here, with a question about humidity
    #7389497 - 09/09/07 09:53 PM (5 years, 8 months ago)

Hi all,

I am new to shrooms but I have a good bit of experience with tropical terrariums, fruit fly cultures, humidity sources/levels, air exchange, etc.

I am interested in growing some cultures from spores using BRF/verm cakes. I understand the principles involved but I am confused by differing "teks".

The MM growers guide(I think it is called) lists several methods for regulating/retaining humidity in the "fruiting container"?. All of which require a good deal of work/maintanence. I like the ultrsonic humidifyer method but all those coke bottles and tubing....uggh. Then I also see that RRmushroomer or whatevers videos on Youtube and all he does place 5 inches of moist perlite in a big tub with a boatload of holes drilled in it and his results seemed preety good. Can it be this simple?

I don't recall him saying there was any maintanance with this method. Will I have to spray the container? fan out the CO2?

I was considering using a small CPU fan in conjunction with the US humidifier on two digital timers. These timers will allow me to run my components for 1 second if i choose. Run the fan for a few seconds to exchange the air and then run the humidifier for a few seconds to replece the water vapor I removed with the fan?

I am just shooting for 90% humidity, 70 degree temp, and air exchange right....but don't let water droplets touch the fruits...yes?

OK...that enough. Thanks in advance for the replies

If RR does something one way, do it the same way ;] his videos are gold, and yes you will need to fan and mist it, you can use a humidifiar instead of misting but the fans wont properly air out the container, use a fruiting chamber lid and fan it a couple times, and do that like 3 times a day.

tell me more about this fruit fly cultures? Sound interesting.. why would you grow fruit flies though?

Thanks for the reply.  I made fruit fly cultures to feed my poison dart frogs, who lived in my tropical terrariums which were maintained with the humidifier.

What is a fruiting chamer lid?  Guess I should search that one huh?

Thanks again, and more replies are much appreciated.

...not getting anymore responses here. Deformedreality recommended a fruiting chamber lid. What does this mean? a drip shield?

Thanks

A lid is a lid. A drip shield is a drip shield, and not many people use them. They were popular once, but kinda faded out.

RR's shotgun tek is the simplest, lowest-maintenance way to fruit your mushrooms. Anything that lets you exchange air while keeping up humidity will work. Depending on the humidity where you are, you may not have issues.

Next question?

The lid of the fruiting chamber.... the rubber-maid tub's lid

I am using that style of fruiting chamber and I am very pleased with it

I live in a dry area (RH usually 20-40%), but the RH in the chamber is usually over 96%, all i do is take the lid off about 3-4 times a day and fan it for 5 sec and use a misty-mate to spray the walls... and I am good.

even with the lid off the RH stays above 89% usually around 92-93%.

I would highly suggest using this.... its cheap, efficient, and very low maintenance.

God I feel stupid. Deformed reality was just telling me to take my lid off and use it to fan the chamber...duhhr

Thanks for the help y'all.

RR shotgun tek...where can I find it. I am starting to think I should invest in this guy's methods and video.

Thanks again

you can watch a video on how to make RR's type of fruiting chamber here...

http://www.youtube.com/profile_videos?user=MushroomsRR&p=r

it's in the pf tek in the 3rd part I believe...

but watch all 4 parts of the pf tek and you will learn alot.

you can purchase his video here...
