According to Mythbusters

According to mythbusters (that show on the discovery channel) if you play your plants music they WILL grow better. the experiment was as follows over the span of 2 months...
1 control room (no music or talking) 2 rooms talking nice ( recording of someone saying oh you're so beatiful i love you etc) 2 rooms talking mean (YOU FUCKING PIECE OF SHIT etc) 1 room of Classical Music 1 room of death metal
All "rooms" are separate greenhouses located on the top of their building with water timers to give each plant the exact same amount of water. All the sound was recorded, placed on a CD in a boombox and played constantly.
... the order in which how well they did (in terms of plant mass)
heavy Metal classical talking nice/mean were equal controlled room did the worst of all.
So for all you growers out there it'd be interesting to see if it would yield larger shrooms or whatever you're growing.

there was a book written called "the secret life of plants"
it has as lot of experiments like this, and they found out plants will actually form relationships with your emotions.
someone would look at a plant and think of burning it and they would get readings on some sort of machine like the plant was literally "shaking" from being scared, then they would think sweet thoughts while looking at it and it would thrive.
they also found out that plants react to the destruction of living cells. when you poor hot water down the drain, every plant within 50 ft is scared and effected, because your killing thousands of little living bacterias.
ive literally watched grass jump around as the lawn mower pointed towards it (not being blown by air or anything).

yeah but that wouldn't matter because all of them except the control (W/out a radio) had a radio in the greenhouse and the control one did the worst.

While this is kinda like that Soninbloom thing...where a birds tone is played to increase plant growth...what we need to do is figure out what sounds works best for each species of plant...
I bet it's whatever is closest to their natural habitat...

You know, I think you're on to something there... I'm going to make a few looping soundtracks to play for different types of plants, just to test it out. Could someone help me name types of plants, and the types of sounds that are most likely in their natural habitat? This might be an interesting experiment...

Aw! you may be right! Thats what death metal effected it the best perhaps... It may even work with sounds humans can't even hear...
What are we thinking...or course it's not the sound...plants have no ears to hear sounds...its the vibrations!

If it is indeed the vibrations (which im positive it is), I guess its LOTS of them, perhaps a techno beat w/ lots of bass would do the trick?

Or a very low frequency, below the range of human hearing, but loud enough to where you can feel it...

I love that book! For all you non-believers out there stfu and read it, then come talk shit about it.
The machine in question is a simple polygraph (aka the lie detector, yes like the one you always see in the movies)
It's a VERY interesting book, even though a bit old. I recommend it to anyone interested in plants
Maybe the vibrations from the music are help to bring CO2 to the leaves by shaking them ever so slightly? It would seem to make sense seeing how the death metal had the best results, and that the two talking rooms had the same results regardless of their attitudes.

I'd like to see the experiment repeated a lot of times to see what happens, to prove that the music versus silence is more than statistical anomaly. Otherwise my hypothesis is that heavy metal, with it's basslines, would stimulate the parts of the plant that classical and higher pitched voices wouldn't reach.
Now I want to do an experiment with signal generators and various LFO's.

Neither, really. They just tested different types of music. Personally, I suspect it is the vibrations from the sound that help the plants grow better. Based upon your question, I'm guessing you have the same suspicion.

I would guess that mythbusters as always used a way to small test group to get significant results.
In short: they suck and everything they to is worthless POS tests which prove nothing, they don't even give good indications one way or another.

I can see low vibrations helping a plant grow faster. When I threw a fan into my veg box, my babies got nice n thick. So if you're blasting something like Basshunter for them, the vibrations from that would probably have the same effect due to the shaking.

well the mythbusters did one test only and I didnt see any soundproofing to isolate thier mini greenhouses acoustically. but look at the the guy that developed sonic bloom. he worked on it over 10 years and even got into the guinnes book of world records and he uses a high pitched warbling noise.

No big mystery...
Wind makes plants meatier and stronger. They have to step up their vigor to withstand it.
Vibrations move plants like wind and shakes the soil.
