Latest catalyst drivers? Crock of shite.

I thought having recent drivers was supposed to REDUCE technical problems... not unleash an army of them bent upon harassing me at every turn.
I get the latest drivers for my damned X1600 pro and suddenly many games think I don't even have a video card.
I'll be saying "fuck off" to ATI once I can afford to get a nice EVGA GeForce 8600GTS (pci-e of course) but until then, I need to fix this crap.

They call it "the bleeding edge of technology" for a reason... you never want to be on the bleeding edge. Let others suffer through the problems and only upgrade after the majority of issues have been fixed or have workarounds.
Unfortunately, ATI drivers have taken a serious nose dive since the company was bought out. I hate to say it, but I would avoid ATI chipsets until AMD gets their act together.
Stick with the older "pre-AMD" drivers or buy a new non-ATI graphics card.

Somehow a reinstall fixed the problem (I'll be damned if that makes any sense)... but I definitely agree.
Both the chipsets and the drivers due seem to be lacking since AMD took over. It's a sad and ironic result considering AMD's success with processor technology, but somehow when they took over ATI they torpedoed the flagship in the process.
Thankfully I found a very good deal on an NVIDIA 8600GTS (sold by EVGA), with some pretty decent stats. I'll be happy to break free of ATI. They were a pretty damn good manufacturer at one point, but their modern cards don't benchmark well and their drivers have been iffy.
Venturing off-topic, this card IS as good a deal as I believe it is, no? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130084

You've got some bad taste in cards.
The 1600 was a POS to begin with. I used to be a big ATI fan, but Nvidia is looking better by the minute every day. Pretty much anything close to it out there crushed that card.
The 8600 is an 'ok' card, but really if you can still somehow get your hands on one, the 7600gt is the equivalent if not better then that card. What happened here was, the 7600gt's were TOO amazing for their pricerange (easy OC, etc) and nvidia pulled the plug on them so people were forced to buy something more expensive. Now that the 8800 has a nice little comfy seat in the market, they released the watered down 'mid range' 8600, mimicking the success of the 7600gt....only the older card beats it in multiple tests. Search up a couple of reviews on google.

I'm not terribly savvy with videocard technology unfortunately.
I spoke to a technician about the issue and he recommended either the 7600gt or the 8600gts. He said the 7600gt was a good buy for my price range, but if I was planning on going to vista soon I might consider the 8600. I'd like to take the chance and hope that in a few months Vista will be patched to the point of being worth my money, and according to the advice I was given the 8600 might be better off for use with the newer OS.
This particular model of the 8600 has some pretty sexy stats though, a 2000mhz effective core clock is certainly not something to scoff at, and 675mhz core clock is quite decent as well.
I suppose I'll peruse newegg and read some reviews though... especially if the 7600gt is any cheaper than the 8600gts. If so, I'll just go with it.
*edit* Well shit, that was quick. Newegg has an EVGA model for $106. Core and memory are both slower, but for that savings I could buy two and SLI them for the same price I would pay for one of the higher end 8600gts models.

Fuck yeah... I found an even better deal on Mwave.com.
I got a 7600gt with 560mhz core clock and 1400mhz effective memory clock (GDDR3) for less than $106, including 2-day shipping. I'm bloody content.
Now I just need to buy myself that enermax chakra case, and I can assemble all my new parts into a kickass computer.
