!!!NEED HELP!!! salvia & kratom questions
    #7130013 - 07/04/07 11:32 PM (5 years, 11 months ago)

okay first off, my kratom seedlings are doing great and growing pretty fast and all look very healthy, but with the high humidity they're in all this green stuff is growing on the top of the soil, just wondering if this will be a problem for the seedlings?

I'm having some trouble with my salvia..
here's what the cutting looked like about a week ago when I got it:

and here's a pic of it now:

the top leaves are starting to turn yellow and all of them are wilting a bit. I transplanted it the day I got it into a bigger pot in some miracle-gro potting mix and a few handfuls of perlite, put it in 90+ humidity and have been misting it in the morning and at night. it was sitting about 6 inches below 80watts of fluorescents 18 hours on 6 hours off, when I noticed the top losing its green I put it about a foot and a half below the light, they still got yellower and wilted a bit more, so I'm thinking it might have something to do with the lights? so my question is what's going on here? is it the lights, or something else? should I take it out of the lights and put in indirect light on my windowsill?

Oh, but you can! And no, I don't have anymore, sorry man.

Sorry to hear about your sally going down hill, a few of mine have parts of them doing the same thing, the leaves are drying up a bit, but I took a bunch of cuttings and I'm hoping that the plant will put the energy into the areas where its needed the most.

I've had a similar problem with green stuff growing on top of the soil. I believe it may be a type of moss that grows when the humidity is high and the temps are just right, or perhaps its totally unrelated and its growing just cause it wants to. I don't think its harmful, its just sort of ugly. I scraped the top layer a bit if I remember correctly, but I'm not sure if it helped with keeping it from growing again. My kratom seedlings are still really small, but they seem to have very slow growth and their still alive, so I'm not too worried. Usually the seedling stage for almost everything is the most trying time, having to watch it barely grow, but then it reaches its growth spurt and just takes off.

Just keep an eye on the plants themselves and see if that mossy stuff is doing anything harmful or not. Not sure what else to suggest, sorry man.

a little late, but maybe a capful of hydrogen peroxide mixed with some water in a spray bottle will kill off that green stuff. It supposedly works for cactus seedlings and doesn't harm them, so id give it a try by spraying a little section and seeing if it works before soaking it all down.

ive always been told that yellow means it needs nutrients and red means it gets to much sun.

salvia:  red/purple mean too much sun, yellow can also mean root rot besides nutrient def, pH lockout could also be a cause, and nitrogen lockout due to poor aeration of the soil.

are you using miracle grow soil by any chance? sally hates MG :nonono:

also, when i was growing kratom, green stuff took over and ate my seedlings. the same green as in your pics.

Yah i agree dont use Mericle Grow its no good. I use an organic gardening soil 2/33 and Perlite 1/3.

Miracle is GREAT if you use it right.. dont listen to those ppl.. I will take a pic of my goliath salvia!!
(I have an older pic in my gallery!)

You must MUST follow the instructions for INDOOR plant mixing for miracle grow the sally likes it it works great for me!

First of all put it on 12/12 thats what I found to work best anymore the sally gets all purp and browned around edges. I use a simple cool colored 15 watt compact floro it grew my salvia to where its at now around 2ft tall since feb, not the tallest however its VERY bushy!!

My sally when it started was VERY VERY VERY sickly for a month or so, until I started misting it often, and put that 15 watt light on it, then it slowwwwwwwwly started growing good, and got SUPER SUPER green and shot up like a weed after that, sally takes a while to get going its just part of it, however I find it very rewarding, perhaps more so than mushies!!

yeah MG soil may be good for most potted plants, but ive put over 25 healthy and rooted clones of salvia in miracle grow soil, and had ALL OF THEM die from weird nutrient defficiencies.
my guess is that salvia needs certain micronutrients in differing amounts than most plants, same as cannabis needs lots of magnesium and most ferts dont have the numbers of mag needed.
either that or sally strongly dislikes salted ferts like that found in chemical synthed crap such as 3month feed MG soil, it will burn the fuckin crap out of lots of different plants. organic ferts barely contain salts in high enough concentrations to choke a plant out.
something in miracle grow throws this plant way out of alignment.

most of the poisoning from oversalting may appear as pink, purple, or browning on the edges of the leafs, even a bleaching the leaves (usually all 4 symptoms at once) white, much like that of sunburn but without the wilting, much like the symptoms you experienced from 18/6 lighting (ever think maybe it was your soil and not the lighting?)
ive vegged sally on 18/6 for as long as ive grown it, and never had any problem til i started using chemical nutrients, or soils containing heavy amounts of salts such as miracle grow and other chemical fertilized medium.

also grogan, i dont think growing one monstrous sally is enough to say that miracle grow is the shit for sally. miracle grow is known for boosting plants water uptake so that they "plump" and look healthier(popular with people growing flowers), when they are actually on a salted carbohydrate diet of junkfood. its like taking steroids, your gonna get bigger and seem stronger and healthier, but when it comes down to it your hurting your body.

and i cant stress it enough, add one or two tablespoons of composted steer manure to ever 1gal container of mixed soil.
its like organicrack for sally.

and if you must know, ive made at least 100 sally clones and tried them out on 4 common soils, black gold, fox farm, miracle grow, and topsoil.
black gold took the cake, and sally absolutely loves soft topsoils with very mild nutrient values.

Where can you get black gold? Would they carry it at like Lowes or Home Depot? I would be using fox farm if I could find a place that sells it(besides online...shipping blows). I'm currently using miracle grow 'organic'. Both me and the sally don't like it too much. The soil drains as well as a clogged toilet:bored:, even with 50/50 soil/perlite. And it takes forever to dry out in my covered grow rack(99% humidity according to my hygrometer). Even on the kitchen window sill it takes about 4-5 days to dry out, and thats not completely dry, just enough to give it a drink.

I used jiffy mix for my soil as well.. No miracle grow soil, I just use miracle grow for indoor plants, and mix like 1/4 teaspoon to 1 gal. I use it on it every 2 weeks.

wierd, i couldn't find a clear pic of the kratom in your gallery, it kind of looks like either primitive moss, selaginalla, or a liver wort. if it is the selag., you are ok, that is a non harmful plant. if it is the liverwort, it might be gettting too much water. the plant itself is not harmfull though. but, i really can't see enough from the pic. can you take another?
