California mushroom hunting pics - Mt. Shasta

These are an unknown species of Psilocybe which fruits in the spring and was collected very recently in Golden Gate Park. Guzman has samples and places it in section Stuntzii. Note the annulus in the middle of the stem. This species is unique in that it fruits in warm weather, while P. cyanescens and the other wood chip Psilocybes fruit in cold temperatures only.
A lab in Weed, California:
$2000 worth of co2 extracts. These taste and smell so good that they are worth every penny.
Mt. Shasta:
Medicine lake:
Coral fungus:
Cortinarius spp.
Amanita citriana is an indicator species for Boletus edulis. When I found the Amanita, Boletes would be a few feet away at least half the time.
Boletus edulis, found at about 6000 feet elevation. It has been raining in Weed constantly ever since we left, so you can expect the edible mushroom season to go on for at least 3 more weeks.
More Boletus edulis. We had only one day to hunt and three people, but by the end we had approximately ten paper bags full.
Boletus appendiculatus (Butter bolete)
A morel:
A small part of the total haul:
Boletus edulis:
Lasagna, made with Boletus edulis instead of flat pasta. It also has artichoke hearts, grape seed oil, fresh tomato sauce, fresh lime thyme, fresh cilantro, white wine and parmesan cheese.

Could your spring Psilocybe be possibly this? http://www.sporeworksgallery.com/microscopy_composites/SanFran_azurelike_redone011707
A newly observed species from the California Bay Area that is similar to Psilocybe subaeruginascens which is known primarily from Japan.
Also in the section Stuntzii. PM me if you would like a microscopy composite done of your sample but its probably the very same species since it was collected in the same area. If you have a scope you can do your own comparison. Interesting find.

> Wow, those are some beautiful pictures. Great adventure. Was the food yummy?
The lasagna was half gone by the time I tried it next morning, and people were following me around the house telling me how good it was.
The baked porchini is excellent. Some that I baked in grape oil and let go too long turned into porchini chips which are the best thing ever. I am eating them now, dipping them in dhal. Its seriously the best thing I have ever tasted.
I gave a bag of porchini to my neighbors who used them to cook some amazing Nepali food.
> You got some incredible hunting there
It will only get better for the next few weeks due to recent heavy rains.
Anyone near the west coast should probably check it out this weekend or the next or the next one after that. There are a trillion pounds of Boletus edulis fruiting in those hills right now that no one will ever find.
> (and some good looking hunting partners).
Yes, I was just noticing that. Mushrooms sure are awesome!!!
> Awesome post Mr. Rockerfeller! The cort shot is special.
That shot was done by setting the manual focus very close, then moving the mushroom in. It only took a couple seconds.

I will find out and let you know. I foolishly forgot to request a sample and will not repeat the mistake.
> when does that psilocybe fruit until?
June 23rd.
> is it still fruiting as of now?
Yes, those are fresh from GGP and the pictures were taken this weekend.

They will be fruiting like crazy in northern california at about 5500 feet elevation under pine this weekend and 6000 feet next weekend.
When we got back down to town there were signs all over that said "Mushroom buyer". They pay $8-12 / lb for porcini, so we could have sold our haul for about $500, but there is no way I would trade those things for money considering how good they are. I just finished frying a bunch of them. I experimented with a bunch of different methods and found it is best to fry them in grape oil just by themselves without adding anything, then lightly season them once they are done.

Actually he found the original fruits in GGP a few years back, and has since spread the mycelium and started some new patches. Those were from one of the patches.
That lasagna looks so good. Our hunting partner made some more porcini lasagna as well. I have had little time to work with mine. He left again yesterday (for the 3rd weekend in a row) for another hunt, then is coming back down Sunday and may go up again on monday or next weekend!!!
Awww my back pack is famous!! Too bad you didn't get the security tag in the pic, heh. I had to run that through the wash when i got home. Ugh, smelled like rotten porcini!!
As for the Butter Boletes... I sliced one open when we got home, since they looked funny... Colour was off, and they seemed less dense. Anyway, we're now certain they are not B. appendiculatus, because the flesh did not turn blue upon cutting it... Here is a photo of some Butters found the week before:
Workman - When the fellow who found these Psilocybe told me that they were thought to perhaps be Ps. subaruginascens, I thought of that same species from the Bay area, and showed him the composite on your site. There are similarities, though these ones our friend finds have a very consistent and unusual trait- they have wavy gills. All of them. So it may be different.
The girl that went hunting with us has been out to the woods since we left and been finding them! Hopefully she has not been wearing such vibrant colours! I recall, I could see her through the trees quite a ways away, when I was off in another part of the clearing doing some picking, where as, I could not see you or our other friend until you guys were very close by, since the three of us were in black.
I might post a couple photos later.... I forgot to take porcini pics!

I totally agree, there are a couple porcinis and blewits I rarely ever sell if anything I'll give em away to a few special people.
I like to dry and make porcini flour from them and then make Porcini Udon noodles.
