 Abnormal Growth on Cake

So my cakes have been fruiting for a few weeks now, and i just noticed on one there is a strange growth on the side of it... about 1 1/2- 2 in wide, and about 1 inch tall.
I picked it off the cake, and for the life of me, i dont know what the hell this is- is it safe to eat? is the cake contaminated? is it just a cancerous growth/polyp from the cake?
it appears to be a normal color (nothing indicating an obviously contanimated cake), white/cream (mostly white). It is slightly fuzzy- looks similar to the mycellium, but slightly smoother. it is very solid, and almost appears to have a few gills on the underside on a VERY small spot on the underside.
I dont have any pics at the moment, but if you need some, let me know.
please help! I dont know what this thing is, or if its safe to ingest!

I think you were right. My friend took a look, and thought it was normal and ate it anyways. He hasnt died yet, so i think it was just a mutant
