I usually play it safe and go see a movie or something. It depends on the chick. Some chicks I've just asked if they want to go throw a frisbee around at the park.

coffee? who meets up for "coffee". I thought that was just something you see in the movies. Take her out to somewhere fun , mini golfing, go karts, bowling, pool hall , beach event, comedy club , anykind of live performance. Definatly not the movies. This is a miscomseption. Movies are bad , because you don't get to talk so there really isn't much interaction.
I'd say go with pool hall. Like that you get to see how she handles a stick and a couple of balls off hand.

When I go to the movies, I always go to a matinee, always so empty, and always end up gabbing our faces off.
But I agree...the pool hall and mini-golf are my two favs

I felt really shit and started beating up on myself about how I'm no good at picking up chicks (no shit I've never 'picked up' in this manner, it's always just happened through months of being good friends with a girl...)
but yeah... I dunno whether I should go back in and have another crack at her in a weeks time or if that seems desperate.
Oh well. Fuck she was a cutie.

Whenever I want to pick up a girl in that sort of situation, I will first ask them if they have a piece of paper.
She hands me a piece of paper, and I go "wait a sec, do you have a pen?"
Now shes got the pen and the piece of paper in her hands. next:
"Now write your number down for me. I may want to call you sometime."
If she seems extra interested, I will walk out without taking the number. Usually they will say "Hey, you forgot your piece of paper" Tables turned, she thinks she is picking up you. Yippee!
I find this approach works about 2/3rds of the time. One of the times I got a fake number, another I was told to fuck off. Oh well 
Overall, it seems to work and one chick was actually pretty cool and we ended up dating for 6 months.

Then get used to rejection. Go to a mall with the intent of getting rejected as much as possible. The first few are scary, but afterwords it becomes easy. Its great, because you are approaching girls with the intent to get rejected, there will be a certain cockiness to your approach. Dont ask me why, but that half cocky, half nice guy approach seems to be the best. You never know, you may meet someone cool in the process.
