"trying to figure out what to do with it" whoa if thats the case I'd say take $2K for yourself now and pump $10K into all sorts of investments.

$12K in your lap, wow. With that sum you could start a small business, do a major overhaul on your house or buy a couple of things that will have great value for you over a long time span. Or you can have a couple wonderful vacations, investing in memories that will last a lifetime.

Don't leave it in money form for too long though. Either spend it on an opportunity (investment) or a commodity (buy something).

If you do it like the national banks do it, you put 10-30% of your spendable sum (10K) in precious metals. A 50/50 balance between gold and silver seems reasonable.

Lets say you pick up 10% gold and 10% silver. For a $10K total investment today that would boil down to for instance 6 bars of 10oz silver and 6 krugerrands of 1/4oz gold, to take care of the $2.000 invested in precious metals, with a 50/50 split.

If gold will double in the coming years, it will pay for itself and the silver investment, making it a free ride. If silver really does go for that 10x increase in 10 years, it by itself returns the whole $10K investment sum to you, regardless of what happened with the $1K gold or the $8K which you hopefully invested cleverly. If they both behave like good boys then your $2.000 gold and silver will return the whole $12.000 sum to you - or in other words net you a $10.000 profit.

When IF's and BUT's were candy and nuts, what a wonderful christmas it would be.

Things might follow a different course entirely though. Like all investments, you are placing a casino bet on God's table. It may all go to hell or go beyond expectation. To me it looks like a good bet, though it requires some patience.

Remember you got the internet. Let thousands of people and institutions shape your opinion, not some lone oddball on a forum.

Marijuana is worth approximately 20X as much as silver, per unit weight.
And I can grow it in my closet.
Hmmm...Which to invest in...

But when you save all that money because you grow your own, what to invest that money in?

I wasted $25.000 on smoking marijuana in 12 years. If I instead had invested the same sums in gold and silver purchases on the right moments during those 12 years, I'd be over $100K today and I could've bought me a second house, at once, without as much as a talk with the bank.

I'd have this cool-ass hacienda in Spain I'd use a couple of weeks for a holiday and rent out the rest of the year to tourists and it'd yield me an additional source of income.

But no, Dopey the Dupe bought 4 kilos of weed through the years and smoked them. Aargh.

If I had invested in the noble metal Rhodium I'd be a millionaire off the money I smoked. Ouch.

I was just thinking of selling it.

The pot, I mean. Not the silver.

I suppose thats alot easier here than there, where the market is legal. But in the US, a person could make alot of money.

thanks for the reply wiccan. Ill most likely end up putting the fate of my investment in the hands of my father, who worked for Morgan Stanley/Dean witter and also Meryll LYnch. He knows all that investment mumbo jumbo that I have yet to take the time to learn.

I'm still young and extremely blessed to have this sum coming my way. I actually got it off a dumb move by my parents.

When i was young (~12yrs old or so), my parents told me that if i worked hard and got a scholarship, they would give me the amount of the scholarship in cash upon my completion of university.

I never actually beleived i would get one, and graduated highschool with a 3.33gpa and a 1210SAT. Somehow, (through my badass esssay writing skills) i got invited to a 'scholarship day' at Virginia state unviersity. Went there, brown-nosed, wrote another glorious essay, and a few weeks later got a letter saying they'd give me $1,500 per semester for the 4years i'm here. Grand total: $12,000.

So now my parents are stuck paying me $12,000 next year when i get out, aah glorious.

I think i have some savings bonds from when i was born (grandmother) that have matured too, i should use those to buy some silver!

I prefer to keep my money in the stock market. It's more accessible to me in an emergency, more secure and easier to diversify.

Wiccan,
How do you feel about purchasing silver from places like E-bay? I know it's not the most trustworthy source, but there are a bunch of respected sellers on there with 10oz bars going for less than $100!

*quotes self*

The best way to do it if you want to physically own it is to find a local bank (not internet but an actual bank you go to) that does bullion. There you can order your bullion, and then put it in the bank vault box you rent there. This means that the money on buys and sells never leaves the bank building, and that the materials you buy and sell are genuine (imagine buying counterfeit stuff) without need for personal "value transports".

Quote:

Basically I frown at eBay transactions. There is a huge difference between respected on eBay and being truly respectable. There are fraud cases where people create 100 accounts and suck up to their alter egos in reviews. An enormous list of positive ratings may entirely be fake.

However eBay and such are the places where one may find a great deal. People can have personal circumstances (rampant meth habits or most often plane old lazyness - not even bothering to get the very best price) that can make such deals happen.

eBay however is also the place to get fucked financially, either someone who pulls a mail trick on you or actually sells you fake bars and coins.

Buy 5, pay 4 seems a wonderful deal - but imagine the bars or coins you buy are counterfeit. Imagine paying $3.000 for 5 one ounce Gold Pandas

<img src=http://www.taxfreegold.co.uk/images/2006chinagoldpandarev240.jpg>

and instead ending up with 5 fake coins made of brass. Instead of a killer deal, you just wanna kill.

If the person you do business with is on the level, then I see no problem, except with eBay you're never really sure, especially on things like 1oz coins or 10oz bars.

If you can get a reputable 10oz silver bar safely for $100 then in these times you have struck a killer deal. It certainly can happen.

Note the "reputable" and "safely". You will want to insure the shipment. The bar has to be of a reputable company too (like Johnson-Matthey or PAMP) or else your future buyer may not trust the odd bar and not do business with you.

If you do business with a respectable organization (a real bank or established coin dealer) you may end up paying a bit more, but your goods will be genuine, internationally recognized bullion and you won't be screwed over if you watch what you're getting into.

So taking into account actual performance.

What has silver done in the last 20 years? This graph may be entirely wrong: http://www.cstcharts.com/cgi-bin/chartge.pl?si.m

But eyeballing it, the price of silver has only doubled in the last 20 years. That doesnt seem like a good investment to me. In fact, if you bought silver in 1988 (according to what may be an inaccurate chart) you would have barely broke even selling in 2004-2005ish.

I get all sorts of emails promising me new "amazing" stocks. I can't analyze them all. Thats what I pay my broker to do.

If only I had that. Doesn't sound too hypothetical

Personally I'm a leprechaun so I'd definitely stock up on silver and gold as a reserve, to throw a number on it 50K in silver and 50K in gold. phoo-wee, that's 75 one-ounce gold krugerrands and 35 bars of silver of 100 ounces each.

That takes care of the passive investment, and leaves you completely free to deal with the 350K left over.

Hmm with that kind of money it seems attractive to take some money for calamaties, and with the bulk of the money buy 1-2 houses (depends on the area you invest, in India thats a street) in strategic locations (where property value will likely increase) and then put decent people in the house(s) to pay you rent/lease

This way you've got a precious metals hedge thats entirely liquid yet shows promise for growth, your major investment is real estate and every month a nice rent/lease sum comes in from the people guarding your property by living in it.

So, basically its all commodities with me.

But its my first hour of having that kind of money. I'd definitely see a financial adviser on it.

Sound good?

Silver price has been artificially kept low. If you look at the 1970s then silver increased 35x in value. During the 20 years your graph monitors silver production has diminished and silver use has gone through the roof.

Read the article that started the thread. There's just $4.2 billion worth of silver in the entire world left anymore and it is a strategic element in many technologies, as well as the backbone of jewelry etc.
If you buy 300oz of silver ($4.000) you own one millionth of the entire world's supply of fine silver. And supply is diminishing fast, while mining capacity cant be simply upped to match demand.

Pretty soon industries will pay top dollar for your silver. See that steep consistent rise at the end of your graph? It probably is the beginning of a mount everest rise, a bullmarket that goes up and up, multiplying your investment as it climbs to a new high.

..so the theory goes.

sound well, real estate..hmmm rentals can be a pain some time and now with the market flooded I don't know if that would be wise

I was thinking maybe china market? currency? or plain ole safe divested investment porfilio hey if you only made 10% average (compounded monthly) rate of return youd amass around 1.2mil before taxes in ten years, you could then ride the interest to live

you'd net about 84k after taxes each year(you need to acount for inflation) without touching your 1.2 mil

Not with 5-7.5% real inflation you can't, which seems to be the case in the USA and EU. Even over the million you'd have to put effort in it, interest alone won't do it.

Quote:

currency?

A bit pessimist perhaps but I believe 2010-2020 will be utterly disastrous for fiat currency (dollars, euros) and that hardships may be ahead for anyone but the multi-millionaire.

Like I said in an above post: they are printing a surplus of 10% money annually while actual economic growth is something like 2.5%. It doesnt take much math to see that will be a big problem quite soon. This goes for US and EU. All of us notice things get very expensive very fast. We're being fucked out of the value behind our money. We make bigger numbers but the value within it is less and less.

The benchmark of investments nowadays is whether you make over an annual 7% profit. If not, the investlment is melting away like an icecube while the number seems to get bigger.

A new use for silver will make it sky rocket. Solar panels are now being made with silver film instead of silicone to increase energy absorption form 17% of suns energy to 50%. the only other thing that absorbs more then cant be manufactured because the molecules have to be alligned perfectly and they cant do that efficiently

i've been stacking silver and other metals and have been happy with the results, meanwhile my cash reserves value drops with the dollar value.

I heard about that yes, thrilling news if its as good as its hyped to be. Imagine a solar panel with 3x the power output!

I bought a significant amount of silver American Eagles last fall and expect to make another large purchase this summer.

I expect silver to reach 100$/oz easy within ten years.
