NBA Playoffs 1

sitting inside today, enjoying a couple cold ones and watching some game 1's of the NBA playoffs
watching Chicago beat Miami right now.. up by 6 with like 5-6 minutes left, but they have been pretty dominant all game.
Nets beat Toronto in Game 1.. lead the series 1-0
Utah and Houston play later, as does Orlando and Detriot

I won't watch until the finals...it's too fucking long of a tournament.

yeah, the warriors were 3-0 vs. the mavricks in regular season.. but i dont think that matters much.
spurs vs. nugs will be a great series.. im really pulling for the nugs, but i think the spurs might steal it in 7
suns vs. lakers.. im going phoenix in 6, maybe 5.. i dont think LA is strong enough on offense to win the series.. phoenix is dammmn good
I am enjoying watching my Cavs handle business this morning. (only 6 more days til the NFL Draft)

I cant believe anyone thinks The Lakers will win more than one game against Phoenix.
Yes, I will cede the fact that Kobe is probably worth one game.
But more than that? No way.
The Suns will embarass them.

i agree with you 100%..the lakers have no post game... stoudimire is going to fuck them up.
how far do you see the cavs going... they will either play toronto or the nets if they beat washington, which should be pretty easy.. i could see them playing chicago or detriot for the conference finals.

Yeah...That team is scary good.
I would say it'll be Phoenix vs. San Antonio in the West, just because I really hate Nowitzki. But I wouldn't be suprised if Dallas made it. All of those teams are really really good...
And I'd say Detroit v. Chicago in the East Finals, but I think they play each other next round, so it'll have to be something screwy, like Chicago v. Cleveland, which will end in a stellar beat-down of Lebron James and his gang of Who?'s.

on another note, how about barbosa avging 26 off the bench? kobe is due for one breakout game at staples but phoenix is too much for them this yaer with a healthy amare

Cavs take game 2 against Washington putting up 109pts, San Antonio evened the series against Denver but now they play 2 in Denver.. and Dallas leads by 2 at the half against Golden State
if Dallas loses tonight, they are done IMO.

I think San Antonio will still take that series.
Both teams have quite a few good players, but the Spurs have the experience...

good fucking game going on now with chicago and miami IN miami.. 1 pt game in the 4th.
NY Nets beat Toronto again to lead the series 2-1.. i really cant believe toronto isnt ahead in the series, i didnt think the Nets were really a playoff contender.
Also yesterday, Detriot beat Orlando again to lead the series 3-0 Utah held Houston to 67 pts and won to cut the Rockets lead to 2-1 Phoenix beat LA again.. 3-0 lead in the series
both Phoenix and Detriot are looking pretty fucking dominant.
Chi-town wins again.. 3-0 lead with elimination game on sunday.

Pistons V. Bulls is pretty much the Conference Final.
I dont know anyone who thinks Cleveland or New Jersey can beat either of those two.
I'd love to see the Bulls win, but I think Detroit is really really stacked with talent.

All time playoff record. So someone had more than 24 assists in a regular season game. That's nuts.
Wikipedia tells me it was Scott Skiles with 30 for the Magic against the Nuggets in '90.

ESPN.com's article said that 24 was the single game playoff record, if it was the record in the regular season as well then I doubt they would have left that out.

Yup, Wikipedia is correct.
" February 24, 1978 Kevin Porter of the New Jersey Nets handed out 29 assists in a 126-112 win over Houston, an NBA record that lasted more than a dozen years, until Orlando’s Scott Skiles collected 30 assists against Denver on December 30, 1990."
http://www.nba.com/history/this_date_february.html
John Stockton never had the record.

What I don't understand is that same nba.com site I linked, when you go to the statistics, and set it to totals instead of per game, it says Stockton had 1,839 assists on 182 games? Puts him second behind Magic Johnson, who is listed with 2,346 on 190 games? That's not even close to right.

Stockton has like 15,000+ assists and has played waaaaaaay more than 182 games. Stockton is also the all time assists leader, not Johnson, I don't even think Johnson is second, but whoever is only has like 10,000+ (only, ha).

Wow, I am an idiot, this whooooooooooooole fucking time I didn't see the giant "Playoff Edition" at the top of the page.
Either way Scott Skiles still holds the single game record for assists at 30.

Cavs finished up the Wizards tonight in game 4... Houston takes game 5 to lead the Jazz 3-2.. and Denver leads San Antonio with the opportunity to tie the series at 2-2.

That was a great game last night.
The SA-Denver one.
Most exciting basketball I've watched in awhile...

Yeah, that was absolutely crazy.
He just comes off the bench and they leave him WIDE OPEN from his favorite spot on the floor, and he drains it for the dagger.

I feel the same way.
I dont know why I like the Spurs. I think 'cause they're an international team, lots of foreign players, no big egos. Plus they play great defense, and Timmy is one of my favorites...
Great coach too.
I like the spurs alot.

Go Golden State. I think they can pull it off tomorrow. They're in front of their home team and just barely lost that last game. (after coming back from 21 down they should have)
Also it sucks that the nuggets went 4-1 AGAIN! If Nene wasn't in foul trouble it would have been a much better game. I still don't think they would have won but it would have been more exciting.

LA is still fighting against phoenix tonight.
phoenix will win the series but i enjoy watching the lakers struggle and keep themselves in it.
and with Dallas, i just think they are too good to be eliminated in the first round.. but i could be wrong.

Wowza.
They didnt just get beat last night, they got DOMINATED.
On a side note, a 7-game series is too long for the first round. We're going to be playing basketball until june...

yeah, i think dallas was too confident coming into the series and golden state clearly wanted it more, if baron davis can stay healthy they might actually give the winner of houston vs. utah a run for their money, since neither one of them are a phoenix or a san antonio.. they have a far weaker side of the bracket. IMO.

at this point i think phoenix will beat san antonio in a good series.. houston will finish utah... detriot sadly will end up beating chicago in a very good series.. cleveland will beat the nets.. detriot wins the east... phoenix wins the west.
phoenix vs. detriot.. nba finals.

If the Warriors can keep it up, I don't think Utah or Houston can beat them.
Suns vs. Spurs will probably be the best Round 2 series. I'm going San Antonio.
Detriot vs. Chicago should be good but I'll have to see the first game before I pick my team.
Nets against Cavaliers I'm pulling for Cleveland.

Hahhahahahaha.
I dont know why you think Cleveland is any good. They are the EXACT same team as the Lakers. They have probably the best player in the conference, and NOBODY ELSE. If Kobe can't win like that, do you think Lebron will be able to? Lebron James does not a basketball team make.
All of those guys SUCK. If the Bulls hadn't gift-wrapped the #2 seed for the Cavs, they would have been playing Miami in the first round. I think Miami probably would have beaten them. I'm 75% sure the Nets will beat them.
Detroit v. Chicago is pretty much the Eastern Conference finals. Chicago won the season series 3-1, and the game they lost they were up by almost 20 in. Rip Hamilton HATES when someone plays D on him, and Tyrus Thomas got into his head so bad that Rip got ejected last game. I predict the same result.
We. Have. Their. Number.
OVER.

yeah i agree chicago and detriot are the best 2 teams in the east remaining... shame they play before the conference finals.. but the nets suck... and to say that all the Cavs have is LeBron would be dumb.. Larry Hughes has been playing big, Drew Gooden leads the NBA playoffs in FG% and Z is 3rd.. Anderson Varejo is a force off the bench, guy gives 120% on both ends of the floor..
Cavs might not look good on paper, but when they are having a good night, they can beat anyone.

I'd like to see the jazz take houston. Mainly b/c the rockets are lame. As for the suns/spurs, yikes I hope that series is entertaining. San An has my respect but god damn they're one of the most boring teams to watch, especially in the playoffs. It's like watching amateur women's golf on a 12" black and white tv.

EDIT- what a game between san antonio and phoenix... the best game i have seen so far in the playoffs, its going to be an exciting series.
Spurs go up 1-0 in the series.

Spurs go up 1-0 in the series.
Yeah, real bummer about nash though. I think it could have gone phoenix's way if he could have just gotten back on the court long enough. Still, hope the series stays like this and doesn't slow down to typical boring spurs bball.

Parker played his ass off, i think he had something like 34 pts and 9 assists... Duncan was pretty damn good also, i think he had a 30-14 or something as well.

A hit to the nose is not the same as a blow to the head. Not even close. It's not like Tony Parker rolled around on the floor for a long ass time like a little bitch.

That game was pretty good but the Spurs do usually make for a boring series. If they are in the Finals the ratings will be low due to their slow down style of basketball and there is not a lot of nationwide appeal for this team. They are boring.
Now last years Mavs-Heat finals featured exciting styles, young fresh players along with more established stars. And the ratings reflected that.
Golden State is also very exciting with fresh athletic players and a run-and-gun style that is nice for the fans.

Monday Nights Results.
Chicago got raped again by like 30. Detriot leads series 2-0 and likely to sweep or win in 5.
Utah played impressive and beat GS by 2 or 4, 112-116 or something like that, very close game though.. looks to be an entertaining series.. we might see utah in the western conference finals me thinks. boozer is a force to be fucking with. and GS is starting to look fatiqued, neither davis nor jackson played that well tonight. al harrington really showed up to keep them in it.

GS had... excuse me, Don Nelson had the Mavs number, but that's it. I really don't think they'll do much else in the playoffs.
The Mavs should've finished up their season knocked GS out of the playoffs before it started. Fuck basketball.

Update: Cleveland takes game 2 and heads to New Jersey with a 2-0 lead in the series
Phoenix leads the Spurs by 5 at the half.

Yep.
Hopefully the Suns will do the NBA a favor and eliminate them. Losing home court advantage right off the bat (hows that for mixing sports metaphors?) hurt though.
I don't think the Suns will get her done unless they play some defense against the Spurs.
You can laugh now..

Let's see what adjustments Pop makes.
I hope this series goes to seven games although I would have preferred Suns vs. Mavs seven games in the Conference Finals. You can't always get what you want sadly.

Fundamentals are boring.
Offense sells you seats, defense wins you Championships.....

as long as the suns keep giving kurt thomas playing time, the suns will win, he is a nice defensive presence down in the paint.
the spurs have a lot of veterns but idk, i dont see them scoring enough pts to beat the suns.. providing the suns dont lose any key players.
and i agree with you on the pistons, no one in the east looks even close to being able to compete with them.. not even my cavaliers

That, and Skill over Less Skill.
They are just flat-out a better team than us, 1-5.
We cant guard any of those guys, and they can play enough defense to keep us from shooting well. The radio here (Chicago) is full of people who want Skiles fired, or Hinrich traded, or Wallace run out of town...
Well, it doesnt fucking matter. We could have had Phil back, and we still would have lost to these guys.
They are a superior basketball team in every facet of the game.
Maybe once we have Greg Oden....

Ugly game. I'll hand it to the spurs for the most part in executing down the stretch. But holy christ, how about calling some of those fouls on Duncan? He would have fouled out if they had called even half of 'em in the 3rd & 4th quarter. And no surprise that thug4lyfe bowen had to whip out the intentional knee on nash. What a chump.

Its starting to get embarrassing how much the suns are whining, CRYING and complaining about fouls.... (Pussies!)
Either play like MEN in a tough playoff series against 3-time NBA champs or STFU and go home to cry to mama.
As long as the Suns are so concerned about the calls, the Spurs will dominate.
Example: The non-foul on Ginobli when he got a black eye, he didn't say a word, went back in and did his work on the Suns.

you think he poked his eye on purpose?? he probably couldnt do that if he tried....
spurs are fuckin bitches expecially bowen
the reason we lost wasnt because of fouls that werent called but because of how horribly Nash played (didnt score once the first half) and Staudemire played a record low amount of time (something like 10 minutes while still being able to score 21)
to tell you the truth im suprised we only lost by that much with how we played and how the refs were playing for the spurs

I couldn't disagree more.
How has he been unduly criticized? He is CONSTANTLY billed as the best player in the league, when there are probably 5 or 6 better than him.
He was called "The Next Michael Jordan" while in JUNIOR HIGH.
He was being called "The Chosen One" at the DRAFT.
He has had everything he has handed to him on a silver platter.
I think thats why I hate him so much, is because he really hasn't done ANYTHING that anyone hasn't done before.
Kobe was a better shooter at his age, Jordan played better defense, Tim Duncan was a better teammate.
He is a very very good player. He will probably win a Championship, unless something goes horribly wrong. But he is not the second coming of Jordan, Bird, or Magic.
He's just another big kid who can't play team ball and expects David Stern to just hand over a championship.
Sorry kid, not going to happen.

doesnt play team ball? thats why his team hasnt won a championship yet, is because he distributes the ball to his teammates, and they arent the caliber teammates of the rest of the playoff teams.. larry hughes is pretty much the main scoring complement to James.. Gooden and Z are worth maybe 10-15 pts.. but its not enough.. 1 more weapon and Cavs will be very dominant. and James plays pretty good defense for being in the league for what 3-4 years? how can you compare him to duncan? ducan is a center, of course LBJ doesnt play as well as what a 10-time allstar on defense? and no he isnt Jordan, but he has put up better numbers than Jordan did in his first 4 season.
he will continue to grow, and his team will continue to get better.

I know what you mean, I'm not saying he is a bad player.
Just dont say that everyone is out to get him.
They aren't.
Trust me, the league and ESPN cant WAIT for him to win a Championship. If you dont see that they already have him canonized, you're blind.

Not saying they lost cuz of fouls. Just saying I get sick of prima-duncan being allowed to just blunder into the paint without any calls.
And bowen is still a cheapshot thug. And manu (and half the rest of the team) are veteran floppers. I bet half of their practice is split between practicing falling to the ground and making this face:

See what happens when the refs actually do their job and call some of the fouls on Timmy?
Also, fuck that chump Horry for succumbing to Popabitch's coaching style of crybaby thug play.

I cant believe they made such a big deal about that foul.
I was listening to the game at work, and then on the way home. And all I heard was "Oh My God, Horry Tried to KILL Nash"
Then I finally saw it, and I was like..."Thats it?"
It wasn't even that hard of a foul...

Yeah, I didn't think the foul was much either. Nash sure did sell it to the refs as a flagrant though.

alright, i was afraid i would be the only one who thought it was a terrible flagerant call and ejection. a) he didnt go for the head it was more of a shoulder shover and nash should get an academy award for that one.

It was probably a flagrant, but he shouldn't have been ejected, and he SURE as hell shouldn't be suspended.

yeha i really cant see them suspended any of the spurs.. now there is a chance of stoutimire or diaw getting a suspension for leaving the bench and coming onto the court.. they will probably hit diaw if anyone.
still no word yet on any suspensions though.

If that's true then the NBA just declared it's intentions to fix games. The spurs have gotten away with murder on the court and a couple of our guys take a quick step on and back off the court for literally a couple of seconds (and one of them could be argued to be checking in after the whistle). If they do get suspended I think I'm done caring about basketball anymore, at least until they stop all the bullshit calls, favoritism and get rid of a lot of these incompetent refs. Stern dying in a car fire will also be on my checklist for caring again if this goes down.
edit to add: The only way I'd accept stoudemire's suspension is if duncan got one too for when he stepped out onto the court after Elson came down on Jones after a dunk. Fair is fair. Personally I think Horry is the only one who should get a suspension. Let the rest of 'em play.

How is that fixing the game? It's against the rules to get off the bench, the NBA has been consistent with those suspensions. Whether it's a dumb rule or not is a different story. I can't believe Horry got two games, though.

I'm waiting to see what the final result is. If Stoudemire & Diaw get suspended but Duncan doesn't, THEN I think it's fair to call foul.

I agree. The NBA does not. They want to fix the series by suspending suns players but not spurs players for the exact same infraction. Not only on the earlier Elson play but apparently on the same Horry/Nash play too, there were a couple Spurs players off the bench. I've also heard that Stern was scheduled to attend Game 5 but has now canceled. What a surprise, he knows he'd get shot in the parking lot.

Duncan and bowen come out on the court during as much of an "altercation" as the other one was. In terms of there being no punches or any real fighting. Just posturing. So it's either okay to come out onto the court during play and/or during an altercation or it's not. Which is it?

If you watch you see he stands up and starts walking onto the court as soon as the dunk happens, before he gets (or doesn't, depends on what you think) gets undercut. Bowen gets up to sit Duncan down. Okay, sure you think Duncan should be suspended, I suppose I could see that, although the camera cuts before I can see if Duncan was on the court just because of the dunk or not, but to think Bowen should be suspended is ridiculous.

Duncan also didn't go on the court and get involved in anything, he simple stood there. Maybe a tech should have been assessed, but not a suspension.

neither stoudemire or diaw "got involved" in anything either. They were well away from the faux melee. So by that reasoning they too should be in the clear.

Both Amare and Diaw got up off of the bench after the altercation, and the only reason they didn't actually throw any punches or anything is because their coaches held them back. Face it, you're not seeing this objectively because you're a Suns fan.

Wait a second here; no punches were thrown by anybody. Aside from Horry's elbow at Bell's face. So why are you so quick to assume they were running down there to throw punches? Because they weren't running, didn't even get close to the melee and were back by their bench after only a few seconds.
Get real.

Also, where did I say they were running? (Although I'm pretty sure Amare wasn't just calmly walking.) They didn't get close to doing anything or actually being involved because the coaches grabbed them. Don't think they voluntarily turned around and sat back down, because they didn't. They got up because of any altercation, with a pretty clear intent of getting involved. Duncan had no such intentions, and therefore did not break the rules, at least not to get a suspension.
What do you suggest I get real about? You are yelling conspiracy theory because a team you hate got the nod in this, and you're team did not. You are the one who can't view this objectively (apparently), not me.

no both stoutimire and diaw cleared the bench, ran onto the court and had to be restrained by teammates and assistant coaches.. get your facts straight
and like someone else said.. everyone knew stoutimire and diaw were getting a suspension for leaving the bench.. but who thought horry would get 2 games for that pussy touch on nash.

wow i cant believe you dont think that was a flagerant... that was obviously intentional; nash wasnt even past half court, horry was looking him staight ahead it wasnt like he accidentally tripped him, he PUSHED him out of bounds!!! the thing that gave it away was how horry walked away after doing so, he didnt act like he was remorsfull or anything he walked away like he just attempted to injur the 3 time MVP winner

horry pretty much set a hard pick on the sideline and leaned into nash.. it was a foul but not worthy of an ejection and now a suspension.

The drama in this series is unbelievable...
The Three time NBA Champions San Antonio Spurs go from being the most boring team in the NBA,
the most dirty team in the NBA,
now they are Cheatingest team in the NBA....
ALL WITHIN ONE WEEK.
P.S. I am Sooooooo THANKFUL that nobody has blamed the War in Iraq on the Spurs.

I'd call it a foul. Probably a flagrant. I don't even think it's a big deal that he got ejected. Two games I don't agree with though.

Or, as they will be known in about two weeks, second place finishers in the Western Conference.

Looks real good for the Spurs.
Trading Horry for Stoudemire AND Diaw?
Thats a pretty good deal.

Actually I think the Suns have a good shot at winning tonight. They've played without Amare most of the year and did just fine. And the rest of the guys will step it up. Also they are playing at home which helps players who normally don't play that much.

Thats the problem with having a team who's only scoring option is perimeter shooting.
Sure, if everyone is hitting shots like the last game, we are probably nearly unbeatable because we can hit from anywhere. We are a great shooting team.
But sometimes your shots just dont fall. We stuck with them for 3 quarters because we played good defense and shot the ball well. Take half of the equation away, and we start looking not so hot.
And we have no inside scorer. Nobody.
I'm not blaming the GM. There arent alot of these guys around.
Yes, these guys are only going to get better, but I think you'll always hit a wall w/out a true big man.

I agree 1000%.
I dont think he wants to come play in Chicago though.
If you could pick playing in Chicago, for Scott Skiles and with Kirk Hinrich,
Or in Los Angeles, with Phil Jackson and Kobe?
Easy Decision.

No matter how sympathetic you may still be toward Ben Wallace, it's unavoidable to face the Bulls in a playoff series without wondering if his $60 million contract was really money well spent. He spent the entire series hobnobbing with his former buds before and after games even as his current teammates were getting obliterated on the court. And then, before two of the three most important games of the year, he was 15 minutes late to the arena. I don't care how bad traffic might have been, taken as a whole these weren't the acts of a true leader.

Who gives a fuck if he was 15 minutes late?
This is being turned into a huge deal by the chicago media, but I fail to see why it matters.
What did we want him to do?
He played pretty good defense. He made some free throws!
He's Ben Wallace. Thats pretty much his 100% contribution...

If I was Garnett, I would much rather play with a solid young team where you will still most likely be the #1 option than play with Team Kobe where all of your points will be off rebounds when Kobe misses a shot.

Honestly, I think the Bulls have a better chance of winning a championship in the next few years that the Lakers. The most important factor, in my opinion, is that the Bulls are in the east. While the Bulls would have to gets through the Pistons at some point in the east, the Lakers would have to go through at least two rounds against elite teams.
Also, I believe that Kobe's championships were thanks to Shaq and Phil's championships were thanks to MJ, Kobe, and Shaq. Even though Garnett is a stellar player, he has nowhere near the ability to dominate singlehandedly that Shaq did when he was in his prime with the Lakers.
Maybe it's just me, but if I wanted a championship, I would go to the Bulls over the Lakers every time.
Or I would just go to the Pistons.

who said the bulls even had 2 first round picks?
right now they are projected to have 1 pick in the first round at #9 and that was recieved from the Knicks. sure it can change in terms of where they pick, but i dont see them getting 2 picks in the first round unless they do some serious trading up.. with that said, i doubt they land either oden or durrant.
