Ahaha. Well said. I read the book last week, after it being reccommended on here.
I can't imagine how the movie could ever capture the end of that story.

I'm not opposed to watching the movie. I hear nothing but good about it. I just can't see it.

The book is at least 100 times better than the movie. It does a lot better of a job explaining what is going on during that mindfuck at the end.

The book was GREAT!
But I find that it's strictly written as a sci-fiction book, trying to be as factual as it can be in a sense(arthur c clarke wrote and described many ideas that came to be in later years), while Stanley Kubrick deliberately tried to make the movie very trippy with his style of camera angles, music and lighting.
I don't know if that makes sense to anybody.
I just think the book was not meant to be "trippy", "mind boggling" or anything counter-culture like that and Stanely Kubrick, in collaboration with arthur c clarke, was able to stay faithful, for the most part, to the story of the book, but put his own trippy/visual/mind bending/psychedelic flare in and behind the lines...sometimes right in your face 
I almost think of the book and movie as two completely seperate things.

Did you know that it was written FOR the film in a collaboration with Kubrick?
It was based on another short story of his.
But 2001 never was, and was never going to be until they met for a collaboration and discussed...
its as much kubrick as clarke.

oh yeah... and the reason why in the movie its Jupiter and not Saturn like they planned when collaborating on the book is that when they got to making the movie, they couldn't get the Special FX right to make a good shot of the rings on Saturn for close ups i guess. I bet Kubrick yelled at them for months before he decided to make it Jupiter in the movie.
i think the book/movie/story is a metaphor for a kabbalistic ascension. One to Ten = Earth to Saturn (corresponding sephirath)
like its about our evolution, progression toward transcendence, of course, the very thing that fuels our exponential progression, our inventiveness, our technology, our tools, is what threatens to destroy us in the end.
Did you know that every time you see a planetary alignment(like at the beginning of the film), it precedes a monolith...
The monolith is 11X9X1...
Kubrick shot the film in a very odd 11X9 aspect ration... making the blank screen at the beginning the first monolith you see...
The screen is a metaphor itself for the catalyst of evolution...
Looking into the screen... seeing the film...
Could just alter your consciousness...
I think it altered thousands of people's consciousness...
Especially in the 60's on the screen on some good LSD.

You're right, the 2001 book was based off Clarke's "The centinel", one of his master pieces IMHO.
Actually, just as with Asimov, the true potential of Clarke's literary style was more often found in short stories rather than novels such as 2001. I'd recommend to those who liked the book to check out his short stories compilations, there's some really great stuff in there and most can be read in no time.

Regardless of the "collaboration", what I'm saying is that Stanely Kubrick did many subtle things with the movie that were definetely not present, or meant to be present, in the book. His famous weird camera angles and lenses, lighting and whatnot.
I've read the book a few times and enjoyed it thoroughly and own the film as well and there is no doubt in my mind that 2001, the film, was made to be a "tripfest" of sorts, while the book was meant to be a classic sci-fiction wonder.

I might take exception with your characterization of Asimov's brilliance as best realized in short story form. I think the Foundation series was his masterwork and that was a trilogy. Absolutely brilliant.
I found the book 2001 rather pedestrian compared to the movie, but that's probably because I had seen the movie a few times before I read the book. I appreciate it a great deal when I don't get my stuff handed to me and I found that a lot of the appeal of the movie for me was that I watched it several times and each time I got more of it.

I don't mean to disregard his other works, I'm just saying IMHO Asimov's short stories are some of the best.
IMO the brillance of "The last question" has never been archieved in long format, even tho the foundation/robot/empire series are great.
