Learning musical composition
    #6746709 - 04/04/07 04:25 PM (6 years, 1 month ago)

I've never taken music seriously because I was not given the occasion. My father is a great artist, youth spent with hippies and listening to pink floyd, he plays a variety of instrument. However my father is a very hard worker so he never wanted me/himself to pursue this seriously. I would say I have an above average capacity for mathetics and a very creative mind(not saying I'm superior or anything...) So yeah I pretty much all music style, especially Pink Floyd/Power Metal/Classical/John Lennon. However I am 20 now and I have heard it is really hard to learn after 15. All I have is an acoustic guitar which was given to me sometimes ago. Actually I made this post to find some good video/books/internet site to learn or to find if anyone would be willing to help.

You should probably take some musical theory classes, because you can compose pretty much how you want as long as it's withing the boundaries of basic harmony. Or you can ignore that even, but your music will be obnoxious.

you talking about learning to play guitar or are you past that and wanting to actually learn more into making songs?

You can learn to play the guitar at any age.
Start now and I guarantee that by age 25 you'll increase in skill ten fold.

Cyberfret.com

This is a great site to start off.

Just think, every note you play makes you that much better.

Yeah, I think the concept of increased difficulty after a certain age is baloney.

Pick up a guitar and put your mind to it.
You'll love it, and you'll get better and better at it.

I agree with all the previous posters, I started playing at 15 and now I'm a professional guitarist, so I call shenanigans on that theory

As far as you enjoy music/playing nothing else should matter

That's crazy talk. Unless you're into olympic girls' gymnastics, 20 is not too old for anything. I've talked to plenty of guitarists who started in their 40s.

As far as guitar information, www.harmony-central.com is a fantastic place to start. Join the forums there.

If you are genuinely interested in music theory, guitar lessons are probably a good idea. Theory didn't click for me until I had somebody show me a few things.

Thanks everyone for the reply, I would be really interested into composing ambient music(using many instruments). I would be interested in learning on the computer before going with an instrument.

Well I think the best you could do is to get yourself a midi keyboard and some midi software and start composing there, it'd give you the possibility to create music for hundreds of instruments, which depending on your sound card could sound pretty realistic.

Are you planning on going to a school or study for yourself?

My brother has a midi keyboard, he plays it a lot. However I'd rather not use a keyboard at first, is there any software where you can compose? I've heard about reason, is it possible to use it well without a keyboard? Is there anything better.

Yeah you could actually try whitout a keyboard, but it's pretty boring IMHO.

Reason is a pretty good piece of software for someone in your position indeed, but it can do a lot more than just compose in midi so it may be confusing at first (I have to work with it for my school and I hate it, I can't understand it )

For composition in midi format any good daw will work, I personally like cubase but I'm sure there are better options out there. If nothing else, I'll ask around and let you know, that's if no-one else has some recommendations?

Simply get a free lite version DAW.  Its much less overwhelming. And I highly recommend learning keyboards asap.  It might be a bitch at first but its going to help make much more logical sense then learning composition just on a guitar alone. (including theory!)  Matter of fact, learn as many instruments as you can.  Not intensively, just pick them up when you can.  Your going to compose differently on every instrument you play so if your stuck on ideas with a guitar, just play a little keyboard and the idea could be made clear.

Its going to be time consuming, but if you truly enjoy it, its a very rewarding experience.  Good luck.

Um. If your into the illegal downloading thing, you can probably get Fruity Loops for free, but if not you can always get a trial. This is a professional program and I've tried to learn how to use it well without much success...but its fun to mess around with. I think you'd better learn just by reading different scales (Major, Minor, Pentatonic minor, etc.) and use that to start learning which notes fit where and why they fit there. I hope i helped?
