Folding@home uses your spare CPU cycles to solve complex scientific problems. Its results could lead to cures for deadly and debilitating illnesses. You can help this project by downloading and running the Folding@Home client software. Here's how! I'll keep this thread updated with useful information about the current state of the Folding@home project.
GPU Version: Folding@home's calculations can be accelerated by most modern graphics cards. The GPU client is currently the best and fastest way to complete work units and earn points, so if your system meets the requirements it's definitely worth checking out. You'll need an ATI Radeon 2xxx or nVidia Geforce 8xxx class card or better. Radeon owners can use any Catalyst drivers since v8.1 (download: XP / XP 64-bit / Vista / Vista 64-bit / 7 / 7 64-bit). If you have a Geforce, you will need the CUDA enabled display drivers v174.55 or later (download: XP / XP 64-bit / Vista & 7 / Vista & 7 64-bit). If you don't already have them you will also need DirectX 9.0c or later and the .NET Runtime v2.0 (32bit / 64bit). Once you have installed the prerequisite software, it should be a simple matter to download and install the latest GPU client. You may also wish to check out the GPU FAQ for ATI or nVidia, and support is available through the ATI and nVidia folding forums. Note that you can (and should!) run the CPU client at the same time, as long as you give it 'idle' priority and give the GPU client 'low' priority under their respective settings. Then just sit back and watch the points roll in!
PS3 Version: Since firmware version 1.6, the Sony Playstation can run the Folding@home client. The PS3 is very fast at performing the types of calculations used by Folding@home, so if you have an internet-enabled PS3 you can make a big contribution and earn lots of points by putting it to work. To get started, select 'Life with PlayStation' from the 'Network' tab to download the application. It requires 500MB of hard drive space to install. Once it's running, press Triangle > Identity > Join Existing Team > 12679. The PS3 (like most any computer) can safely fold 24/7.
SMP Version: Folding@home has SMP support for people with multicore or multiprocessor systems. This functionality is included in the default Linux and OSX clients, and a separate SMP-enabled Windows client is available. It is slightly more complicated to set up, but SMP work units give extra points to make it worth your while. You shouldn't have any problems if you follow the instructions on the download page. If you have a dual or especially a quad core processor, it is recommended that you run the SMP client to earn the most possible points.
Frequently Asked Questions: How do I get one of those colored helixes under my name? After you have completed at least one work unit for team Shroomery, go to your basic preferences and scroll down about half way. Fill in the 'Folding@home Username' field.
What's the deal with the different colors and lengths? The longer the helix is, the more of a contribution you've made to the team total (it's logarithmic). The color goes from grey through red and green depending on how many points you've received in the past week.
I already have Folding@home points with another team, can I transfer them? Unfortunately no, but don't let that stop you from switching to 12679 anyway.
When I check my stats online it says I haven't submitted any results recently, what's wrong? To find out, go to the directory where you installed Folding@home and look for a FAHLog.txt file. Open this in any text editor and scroll to the bottom to see the most recent output. The most common errors you are likely to see:
"[08:57:39] - Error: Could not transmit unit 01 (completed some date) to work server." Make sure Folding@home's "Use IE Settings" option is set to no - your client.cfg file should contain the line 'usereg=no'. Make sure you're connected to the internet and Folding@home isn't blocked by your firewall. Check http://folding.typepad.com/ to see if there's an outage. As a last resort stop the Folding@home client, delete "queue.dat" and the "work" subdirectory, and restart Folding@home.
"[03:15:22] - Error: Attempt #1 to get work failed, and no other work to do." Make sure Folding@home's "Use IE Settings" option is set to no - your client.cfg file should contain the line 'usereg=no'. Make sure you're connected to the internet and Folding@home isn't blocked by your firewall. Check http://folding.typepad.com/ to see if there's an outage.
"[02:41:58] - A potential conflict was detected: Process 1392 is currently running and may also be a client with Mach. ID 1." You have multiple installations of the Folding@home client, make sure that's on purpose. Verify in the client.cfg files that they have different machine IDs. Restart the stopped client.
Little Known Fact: By default, the Folding@home client takes a conservative approach to system stability. Any time it terminates abnormally, it assumes it caused the crash and disables SSE and 3DNow instructions on the next run. This can be useful if you have a faulty or overclocked processor. However, there are many other reasons your computer might crash or restart unexpectedly. If you know your hardware is stable you can run Folding@home with the -forceasm flag to disable this behavior.
Feel free to post any questions, comments or accomplishments in this thread!

Any ideas of what doesnt work? The graphics client is more CPU intensive, and requires some 3d rendering. Maybe download the console version for windows, and run that. Download it, move it to a good directory, and run it where you ultimately want it to be. It will create the files it needs in that directory, so be sure not to run it from your desktop.
Just enter your name, team id, and then if you want check off "run as service" and it will always run in the background without you having to do anything when you reboot.

Every work unit helps . Hell I even have my Xbox folding, that's a 733MHz Celeron and it takes a week to finish a work unit but it's better than nothing! ShroooomerToo, if you visit this page it has an overview of the Folding@home project and links to more detailed information. If you have any specific questions I'll be glad to answer them.

Well, the simulations they're trying to run are very complex. But the problems can be broken down into many pieces which are small enough to be solved on home computers. With enough home PCs all working together on different pieces of the problem, it's like they have a powerful supercomputer. There are some systems which are too slow to make a useful contribution, but in general any processor with SSE instructions can help (so that's Pentium 3 class or better).
The important thing is that the project could lead to scientific breakthroughs and cures for serious diseases, and there isn't really any downside to running the program. So even if you don't understand all the technical details, I'd still encourage you sign up!
I hope this makes sense though, please let me know if you still have any questions.

I'll be glad to give out a free supporter account each month to the top contributer. How do you find who's earned the most points in the past month though? I guess I could write a script to parse the last 7 months production for each user, it seems like there should be an easier way though.

Yeah, but it will only run on one processor. If you try to launch a second copy, it sees the first one and kills itself.

I have a dual-core CPU. It's very easy to get them both crunching for F@H. You just need multiple copies of the console, in different directories (eg. C:\Program Files\Folding@home\CPU1 and CPU2). Configure them the same, except give them different machine IDs (1 and 2). I recommend answering 'yes' when it asks whether to install as a system service, you'll never even know it's there. Until the SMP client is out of beta this should work fine.
Oh and thanks for bringing a PS3 to the team Legend! You can tell who has one, since their stats make my years of contribution look like the work of a pocket calculator.

Hmmm... you're using the console right? Download the executable and copy it to two different directories. Run the first one and set it up, then run the second one and set it up the same except with a different machine id. For me that's all there is to it, but I'm thinking this may be the problem:
Quote:
-local
Use configuration files from local directory. This option has no meaning on Linux, but is vital on Windows and Macintosh for running multiple clients on a machine. It instructs the client to read its config information from the client.cfg file in the current directory rather than, on Windows, from the installation directory specified in the registry, or, on Macintosh, the Library/Folding@home directory. Information such as the user name, team name, proxy information, machine ID are maintained in the client.cfg file. The flag ensures that work does not conflict. Use "-local" only if you are planning on running more than one instance of Folding@Home on the same machine (this is only useful if you are running on a multi-processor machine). Create as many directories as there are processors on the machine, copy the exe files and client.cfg file into each of these directories, run "FAH3Console -local -config" on each and specify unique machine IDs for each directory (under the Advanced Settings option). From then onwards you may run each copy by switching to its directory and running with the -local flag.
Since I run them as services, maybe -local is implied...? Anyway I've never had to use it but maybe you should give it a try.

I checked my stats today and it says that I'm only folding on 1 machine but I'm really folding on 3. Is this because they (the computers) are all connected to the same internet connection through a wireless router?

Nope it doesn't matter if you have multiple PCs sharing an internet connection, they should still show up separately. But I just checked and it says you have 2... did you recently start folding on one of the computers? It might not have finished its first work unit yet.

The SMP client should run on all cores if it's set up right. Running more than one SMP client wouldn't work, well, maybe on Quad Core, but better to get the work done more quickly by running only one instance. Check your deadlines if you're running on a slower dual core. It would be poopy if it wasn't getting done fast enough to help the project. No PS3's here, all linux network, one Quad, one Dual, a pentium 4 and 2 pentium III's. But I'll pay for electricity if somebody wants to buy me a PS3.

in your client.cfg you can change machineid=1 or something like that to another value. This should help?

My helix changes color from time to time. I know it's supposed to do this as you get more WU's, but it's doing it without me getting any more and without me submitting my name when I edit my details. Does it automatically update your completed frames without you having to type your name in?

I just joined the Shroomery team on folding@home. I have 4 computers in my house. Now if I put all 4 running folding@home, would it help the shroomery team anymore, than just running it on one computer?

Definitely! The Folding@home project can take advantage of multiple PCs, you'll get (roughly) 4 times as many points by running it on 4 different computers. Just make sure to enter your same username and our team number each time you install it so your work is properly credited. Thanks for signing up!

Also, is there a way to give the program more space to run, so it's more efficient. All of my CPU's are running on 240+ Gigs with NVIDIA GFORCE, and AMD Turion64 x2 processors. I'd be willing to give it 2 gigs each.

Come on guys, most of these Q's have been answered in the first post.
Bandwidth: The chunks of data you get are about 1mb~, unless you set special flags for larger work units. Depending on the speed of your PC and the WU, it might take anywhere from a day to a few days to complete work on that unit, and send back the results (a very tiny file). So you're looking at like 2MB transfered once in a while (days?) In other words, you wont even notice it, even if you tried.
Troika: The above answer pretty much answers you too. The file sizes are typicaly pretty tiny, and its not the space that matters, its the speed of your CPU, and the proper configuration for it. (Your turionx2's might need a special setup from the regular client. These have been made user friendly since dual cores are more common now.)

Question for ya. Do you know any way to limit the size of the information being sent back to them? My university has a bullshit bandwidth quota which limits me to uploading 512MB per 7 days. Yes, it's bullshit.
Anyway... I've almost had my connection turned off because I set up 2 console versions to take advantage of my dual core 3.57GHz processor. Any clue on how I'd limit the size of the work units via the console?

You don't transfer much data, the work units are small and the results are even smaller. It depends on the particular work you're doing but I doubt you'd ever upload more than 5MB a week even with two instances running. However to answer your question I don't think FAH has any soft of built-in support for an upload quota.

Well, I just turned both processes back on... We'll see if there's any correlation between F@H and my bandwidth by tomorrow. As of right now, my machine has sent out 33MB worth of data... If there's a huge spike in outbound data... I'll know that F@H is the culprit. In the past this has been the case.
You think something could be set up wrong?

Yep... It's F@H causing the spike in bandwidth usage. Take a look:

See the stair step pattern in upload traffic? That'd be F@H. Balls. Guess I'll have to at least turn off one process. meh

ok I just installed it and all it is, is a helix ball rotating around. Is that what it is suppose to be? It says it should be done in like 20 minutes or so. What happens when i shut down my computer right now and then turn it back on in like 5 hours? Will it pick up from where it left off or just start a new process?

It sounds like it's working just like it's supposed to. It saves its work periodically, so when you shut down and restart your computer it should pick up where it left off. Thanks for joining up!

Yea, hurray, lykos, MFKDGAF. Thanks for folding for the shroomery!
lykos, are you running the Windows or Linux SMP client on your quad? It's good science and good points both. Give it a try if you're running four uniprocessor clients now. If you like it you can copy the unfinished work off to the P4's and run SMP on your Quad.

Folding@home doesn't use much bandwidth at all. Any difference should be imperceptible. If your internet is slow there's almost certainly another reason.
It does look like it's working though, the stats page can take a few hours to update. Thanks for joining the team!

Thanks for signing up! The estimate can be wrong until it's been running for a while, so I wouldn't worry about it. Most work units will finish in under a week unless you have a really old computer. If it takes longer than that and you still aren't close to 100% then something might be slowing it down. I'd keep an eye on it but my guess is everything's fine.

Also, unrelated but I may as well post this now while I remember. Our team rank is falling precipitously! We're in 91st place right now but at the current rate we'll be 96th in just ten weeks. Being in the top 100 at all is a great accomplishment but we need to increase our team production if we want to stay there! If you haven't gotten around to installing F@H yet, please give it a try. It's quick and easy and the program is small and unobtrusive. If you have any extra computers, you can add them to the team too. We have 914 inactive members. If you gave up folding for some reason but are willing to try again, you can get tech support in this thread so it goes smoothly for you. And if you have a PS3, you can set it up to fold while idle and get a ton of points; my brother folds on a single PS3 and he's third in the team for production (right ahead of me ). Anyway please just generally spread the word and do what you can to help get more systems folding for team Shroomery. We've come too far to get passed by a team called D&D Minions!

Definitely, and please do! When Folding@home is running, press triangle, choose 'Identity', and 'Join Existing Team' #12679. Thanks a lot that will really help.

anyone else running win ME? since installing the F@H program iv'e had nothing but probs on this computer. when i tried to uninstall i get this dialogue box>
THE WINFAH.EXE file is missing export user.DLL GETLASTINPUTINFO
followed by>
c:\program file\folding@home\WINFAH.EXE a device attached to the system is not functioning
on starting the computer i now have a "MATCLI" icon on the taskbar if i don't click the "ok" button in the two dialogue boxes quickly enough the computer freezes.weird.
anyone else getting this or know if this "MATCLI" is related TO F@H?

I'm joking Rune.
I read somewhere that pi to 40 decimal places is sufficient to determine the circumference of the universe to within a few millimeters. And I think the current world record for pi is past a billion decimal places so we have enough for now.

I completed a sequence at 3am today but when I type in my name which is the same as my sn here it says I haven't completed 1 even though my screen says 1wu complete. Is there something else I have to do or do I just have to wait for them to update it?

oh, so I will have to wait for tomorrow. My PC is a 2.1ghz with 1gig ram but I have a portion of my HD working as ram as well. How long does it take for the average person to complete 1 wu? It takes me 3 days. Just curious.

How long does it take
Different wu are different size, so how long it takes varies. But several days isn't unusual even on a fast machine. These are computationally hard problems to solve. That's why it takes so many of us to make progress.

It's too bad you uninstalled it, if there's a problem sending the results back to the server (which there is from time to time) it will continue retrying and you will eventually get credit.

Why? It has virtually zero impact on your machine. It runs in the background and instantly stops when you so much as touch your mouse. Meanwhile, the benefit it brings mankind is enormous. Maybe even the cure for cancer some day.

So I've been having periodic problems with my Folding@home client, getting output like this in the log file:
Quote:
[07:24:09] + Attempting to send results [07:24:40] Couldn't send HTTP request to server (wininet) [07:24:40] + Could not connect to Work Server (results) [07:24:40] (171.64.122.83:8080) [07:24:40] - Error: Could not transmit unit 01 (completed January 24) to work server.
The solution is to ensure that Folding@home's "Use IE Settings" option is set to no. Your client.cfg file should contain the line 'usereg=no'. Hopefully someone will find this useful.

Absolutely, just run ./FAH504-Linux.exe & and fold away. In fact, like most applications it will probably run best on Linux.

Hi, I'm completely new to both folding@home and the shroomery. It was a nice coincidence that on the day I installed folding a friend recommended joining this forum (I don't know the name he uses on here). My folding name is Gecko and I hope to be rising my way through your team ranks shortly

The 360 does not have Folding. (Almost positive) I wish my internet didn't cut out a lot so I would be able to Fold better.

I leave my "rare and expensive" computers on 24/7 to fold, and they'd be way more inconvenient and costly to replace than a game console.

Nothing anymore, I guess.
I leave my computers on 24/7 anyway, but for other reasons. I just figured that the stress of running for a long time wouldn't be healthy for game consoles, which for aesthetic and price reasons are poorly ventilated.

Im a tech guy and I will vouch that if air quality is great your electronics with CPUs and Hard Drives staying on all the time with CPU @ 100% folding will most likely make it last longer than if it was powered up and then shut down in a cycle.
Expansion and contraction affect everything.
If you keep anything at a constant it will degrade less over time.

Thats absolutely correct, in years past with older style processor sockets, the expansion and contraction of letting the processor heat up, then cool down when shut off cause 'Chip Creep' which is basically when the processor (or any other chip not held in place) would wiggle itself out of the socket causing a non-booting system. I would also like to note, I just joined the Shroomery F@H team, I am running it on several multi-core machines across my network.

While I'm psyched to have finally broken into the top 100 for Team Shroomery , I just noticed that the team as a whole has dropped out of the top 100 overall.
I LOVE seeing that this community outperforms tens of thousands of others.
We're currently 112th out of 117,882 teams. I just brought a second processor online. Go team!

I just installed on my weak compy at work- not fast, but better than nothing.
We leave our systems on at home on occasion, like when we're in and out of the garage/party central. My roommate's an engineer, and might be able to appreciate the value of crunching data like this...if so, I'll sign on his phatty dual core machine as well as (of course) my dual core at home. Both have x1600 or better ATI cards...hmmmm...of course, we don't want to use up precious cycles when gaming...must think on this.
And I think I'll have to put the secretary downstairs on as well
It's neat, I've participated in dist. comp. (I'm not personally concerned with SETI, etc) but this project sounds valuable enough to be worth my involvement.
Also, it's cool to see this community participate in a project like this!

If youre worried about games, you can set it to have a low priority and only use so much cpu, or to only come on after x minutes of inactivity, or set it to not automatically come on at all.
I just have it to come on after 30min inactivity, and it works fine. Course I don't anymore cuz my laptop dies from heat, but there ya go.

I recall reading that someone noticed that only one core was running while folding...I assume they gathered this info through ctrl-alt-del "performance" tab.
Mine works with both cores, so says the graph.
I wonder if it could have anything to do with processor drivers or that AMD dual-core "optimizer" software?
Also, I decided to do some >5mb work units at home...those proteins are some big boys compared to the little guys on my office compy.
It's sort of addictive to see how much work's been done, and also interesting to read about the various projects.

could someone please tell me why it keeps telling me there is a core download error, and tries multiple times to get the new core? i completed 1wu and now it's doing this crap for the last hour. it looks like it's downloading, the numbers run up to around 70,000bytes really fast then tells me there's an error. i couldn't find any info about this.

Absolutely, the answer is yes. All you have to do is log each client you install with the appropriate login information (username, password) and each WU it completes will be credited to your account. I currently have 2 processors online and have had 4 in the past.

It could be a number of things. I'd recommend, first and foremost, uninstalling the client, rebooting, then reinstalling the client and see what happens.
If you're running a firewall and haven't made an exception, there might be a problem with the downloaded core file. Give it a shot and report back.

I just started folding again after a long time away. I started using the screensaver version (OSX) so it can run while I'm away. I've noticed that when I return to my computer, it's extremely warm and I can hear the fans etc. working much harder than they typically do. Is this normal? I feel uncomfortable letting this run for long periods of time because of this but maybe I'm just paranoid .... ?
Thoughts anyone?

That's definitely normal, it's because your CPU is operating at full capacity and it's nothing to worry about. Your system is engineered to withstand the heat. In fact by running at a continuous high load you reduce temperature-related expansion and contraction which can physically stress the CPU (although you also make the CPU more prone to the effects on electromigration). But honestly, with modern hardware, neither one of those concerns is anything but academic. Your hardware should outlast the usable lifespan of your computer even when utilized to its full capacity.
However, I notice you said you're running OSX. The one caveat to the above is if you have a Macbook or Macbook Pro. In the past they came with too much thermal paste applied, and this can cause real heat problems. If your system is affected, you should get it serviced by Apple. But just because it runs hot after the CPU has been maxed out for a while doesn't necessarily indicate a problem. If it starts crashing or shutting down on you because it gets so hot, then I would be concerned.

Just wanted to introduce myself as a noob to the forums, mycology and folding! Started folding a couple days ago, with my quad-core running the SMP client and my 8800GTS running the GPU2 client. My PS3 is on its way back from an RMA and should have that folding by mid-week too!

Hey I never had to pick a user name or anything... It asked my name and I put my first name in, but never did it do any search for availability. Im a little familiar with comps and this wasnt the username question, it was like a registration of product question. I wanna be able to display my addition to the effort. Any help?

Figured it out. I had the same username as someone else so they were getting the credit for what my comp was doing.

Veda,
that's something that happens when the assignment server is overloaded. It happens every few weeks where it just continously stalls over and over. It can do it up to 30 times (in my case) before it finally rounds itself out...
If it stalls for more then 5 days, then there's something more importantly wrong.

Then there's a problem on your end. I have 2 processors on this computer right now constantly updating, one with a Amber Wu and a Gromacs Wu. Maybe look into the F@H forum and see if your having a similar issue as some others. Hard to guess without knowing specifics.

i just setup 2 dedicated linux servers that are on 24/7 with the shroomery folding team. one is setup as a service, the other i have not setup for service yet, but it will probably be more than a week when this computer gets rebooted, and it will probaby be a service by then. =)

are you using the console version or the heads up version?
If your using the console version, go with FAH Mon, its a little 3rd party monitor that tells you all sorts of neat stuff about your work. I like it anyway...Plus it will give you a direct access to your accounts ranking in the big Shroomery list showing how many you've done and where your at.

Came back and started it again and it had problems reading the saved files. Downlaoded a new core and started from scratch!!

Brutal.
Hmmm, Fahmon will work with your version that you have. Though the issues with saved data, that sounds familiar. I used to use the SMP for windows but would only cause me grief so I went back to single cored older models, one GPU (with shared 1 core) and a regular CPU engine.
Have you found any of the aforementioned issues in the folding forums?

I got fahmon to work, but its got a wee red coloured box next to it, cant read my core though knows my progress. no ETA
Had a look round the folding forums and found similar problems with no real answers.
I did find a post asking how you shutdown FAH. I generaly just close the terminal. Through that post i found out that ctrl-c sends to shutdown signal to an app thats running but that window must be active.
I shut it down that way, and today started it up and it resumed at 87% yay, ive almost done 1WU.

Awesome.
With Fahmon, I noticed it takes the better of 3-6 days for it to 'work the bugs out' so to speak...like it needs several finished WU's before it actually starts recognizing what actually going on. But after it gets on track, it works terrific.
Now all ya gotta do is list your name/number on your account so you can get a spiraly DNA

Yikes, that is a massive one. But worth a whole pile...that's the thing with the SMP WU's though, they are assigned massive projects that the single core engines will never see I usually get 2485, 2484 pieces.
You'll definitely see something in the next day or two...unless your monster takes an extra long time.
