Morels found in TN!
    #6712280 - 03/26/07 11:14 AM (7 years, 5 months ago)

My father found four morels this morning in our front yard (woodsy area)!

They're here!

Unfortunately, I can't provide any photos of his find...anyone else having any luck, share your finds!

Still got a few more weeks until they hit northern Illinois... Can't Wait! Last year's adventures were VERY profitable... I can't even begin to describe how many pounds we had.. and still have! We had so many last year that when we did our annual drying to get us through winter, we ran out of containers to put them in!

Rain has been pretty frequent and the temps are up... I think its gonna be another great season

Lucky! I've never found more than a bagfull...but I've never had a large enough area to scour..

It's been somewhat dry around here, but the temp is right...I hope more pop up soon!

well shit, your season is longer than ours... not by much though, maybe a week. You don't need a whole lot of private land to find as many as I do... Pick your favorite forest preserve and search the right spots (if you regularly hunt morels you know the right spots). Scan that forest from end to end. Once you find some, REMEMBER THAT SPOT! I go back to the same trees year after year, although some have been exhausted and nothing grows under them anymore.

I suggest forest preserves for the sole fact that there is usually private property around them. Many morel hunters stampede the public forest preserves, but not too many want to venture onto private property. I don't necessarily recommend intruding because some farmers won't think twice to shoot your ass. Some of my best spots are on someone elses property, but I'm pretty sure they have no idea that there are wonderful mushrooms growing there or that I am there raiding the crop.

What section of Tennessee did you find them in?

Yeah, I have found a few spots of my own, but they are few and far-between..I suppose I need to go search for a new spot! Perhaps later this week...

zzz, the mushrooms were found within 18 miles of the Kentucky border almost directly north of Nashville.

I'm currently in the Upper Cumberland, and I'm thinking I should search somewhere around here since I never have before. I gotta find me some more spots!

So when was the last frost for you?

Also are the lilacs blooming yet? Any type of floral activity going on?

Keilbasa, I must say I love the food from which your name was derived...(yes, the real kielbasa from Polish people, not the wannabe stuff). Also, I'm not sure when the last frost was..probably 3 weeks ago. The may apples are popping up and also trillium is popping up rather well right now.

Good luck!
