I'm reading Religion Explained: The Evolutionary Origins of Religious Thought by Pascal Boyer.
It's fascinating.

While on vacation the past week I read:
Speaker for the Dead by Orson Scott Card
Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind by Shunryu Suzuki
The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch by Philip K. Dick
Middlesex, by Jeffrey Eugenides, which was fucking TERRIFIC.
Now I'm reading Stranger in a Strange Land by Robert A. Heinlein.

Middlesex is one of my favorite books! It took me two years to finally pick it up, after receiving it as a gift one Christmas. But man, when I finally started to read it, I was so drawn in!! (The Greek factor attached to me also, since that is the majority of my heritage.)
I could see the characters visually and mentally. Every location, I was there.
On the mountaintop among the silkworms
At the burning coast of Smyrna,
In the lifeboat,
On the frozen river bootlegging,
On the streets of Detroit riding a banana seat bicycle through gunfire,
In the rooms without doors at the Middlesex house,
In the temple listening throught the vents,
In the cabin with Jerome
On the porch swing with The Object
Jeffrey Eugenides is simply a master of description.
I could see the way the story was unfolding and it would play like a moving picture in my mind. Sometimes things would catch me off-guard and I'd roffle. Other times I'd shed a tear.
I got very sentimental any time the old Desdemona came into the picture because she so greatly resembles my grandmother.
This book also does a great job of portraying the struggles many immigrants had to go through during that time period.
So right now I'm reading Pale Blue Dot by Carl Sagan. It's a little slow, but fascinating. Some mind-blowing pics of outer space are placed on just about every page. Now that I think about it, that's probably why it's slow...cuz I'm off ogling the mysteries of the beyond instead of reading about them.
I'm also reading a book about Chakras for the second time. The author is a little "new-agey" for me, but she still explains the functions of the chakras very well, in a simple to understand manner.

I'm currently reading "Quantum: A Guide for the Perplexed" by Jim Al-Khalili. Though, there's one I'd recommend to .. anyone who could handle it, "The Greatest Story Never Told: A Scientific Inquiry into the Fall of Man from a Higher Civilization in Antiquity" by Lana Cantrell. It's out of print, but you can find it on Amazon, I believe. It's quite long, but it's very well documented and a very good read.

I loved that book by Heinlein. I've been told his "Time Enough For Love" is great too.
Right now I'm reading Portnoy's Complaint by Roth, planning to re-read The Anubis Gates next by Tim Powers.

Are you from a Jewish family? I always wonder how close to home the jokes in Portnoy's Complaint strike for the gentiles who read it. It seems like such a collection of inside jokes for men who were raised by Jewish women.

I'm about halfway through with Still Life With Woodpecker. Damn good so far, as usual with Tom Robbins.

I am just finishing The Blind Watchmaker. I'd recommend it to anyone who has read and loved Origin of Species.

Just finished Ishmael a few days ago... I really liked it, the way it presented some cool thoughts in a totally bizarre way.
now i'm working my way through 'artificial light' James Greer.. (or Fiat Lux?)
as well as 'the new american chef' by Andrew Dorenburg and Karen Page.. if you're in the culinary field, the books these two put out are invaluable references.. 'culinary artistry' being one that i will always keep handy.
also piecing through, 'molecular gastronomy' by Herve This... another field specific book.. but a cool book if you are into food and science... it's one reference on the joining of both. The bible being, 'on food and cooking' by Harold McGee
