Oh man, you shouldn't have posted this, I'll go on for days. Firstly, I personally am not a fan of JMT, Apathy, Celph Titled, and other Demi Godz or AotP members really. I got into the underground scene through them, but mostly don't enjoy it anymore. (JMT's Violent by Design is still a personal favorite however.) Alright, let me start with, how about my top ten favorite albums at this EXACT moment. In time.
Cunninlynguists - A Piece of Strange (I LOVE LOVE LOVE Kno's beats.) The Roots - Game Theory (Really any Roots, but this is their latest.) Madvillain - Madvillainy (Mad Libs on beats, MF Doom on mic, they're like two of the best in the game right now.) MF GRIMM - American Hunger Lupe Fiasco - Food and Liquor (yeah, not really underground, but still hot, and undie wasn't a requirement, was it?) RJD2 - Dead Ringer (Just beats, if this isn't your thing, then I understand. Great to trip to though!) Jay Dee - The Shining (R.I.P. his shit is dope.) Edan - Beauty and the Beat (Edan is soooooo gooooooood! Please check this album out, even if you don't like anything else I say, CHECK THIS ALBUM OUT!) Insight - Updated Software V 2.5 (If you like Edan, you'll like this dude, they're pretty good friends too.) El-P - Fantastic Damage (If you like Can Ox, then you'll like this, El-P laid down the beats for that album, after all.)
Those are in no particular order. There are other's that I really like, but didn't mention because you already have them, or another by the same artist, listed. Immortal Technique both Rev. Vol 1 + 2 are good. Lif, Aesop Rock, Heiro and any solo stuff by the memebers. If you like Aes and Lif, check out other Def Jux people. After scrolling up I see you have Edan, so another suggestion is Tame One - When Rappers Attack. I'll wrap this up by throwing out a couple other artist: Cage, Copywrite, ANY Wu-Tang, group or solo, Common, Black Star, Mos Def's early stuff, Sadat X, DJ Shadow (instrumentals, more good trip music), and Murs.
I know that's a lot to wrap your head around, sorry, and sorry it's so long. If you check some of that stuff out and like it, let me know. If you don't like it, let me know too. Maybe at a later point in time I'll throw out some more artists. Good luck, and remember, Limewire makes getting all of that easier/cheaper! And welcome to the world of hip-hop/rap!

Cool I'll have a look for them. Out of the ones I posted I would say Immortal Technique, Aesop Rock, Heiroglyphics and Cannibal Ox would be good places to start if you haven't heard them.

Yes! I'm really into the Def Jux stuff I've heard, and also this collaborative group The Atoms Family, are they Def Jux? I'm not sure. I like all Viktor Vaughn's albums. I have to say that for straight out talent and creativity Aesop Rock has just blown me away, such a unique style.
Also check out One Be Lo!

Atoms Fam is no longer around. Vast Aire, the half of Can Ox who is the slower, more punch line oriented rapper of Can Ox was a member. I can't remember if Vordul Megalah was a part of it too (the other rapper), I don't think so but not sure if you pay attention you'll hear them give Atoms Fam shout outs in songs. Viktor Vaughn is one of MF Doom's many aliases, I think Doom's best stuff is the stuff he does as MF Doom, like Mm Food, More Food, Operation: Doomsday, etc. He also lays down beats (under Metal Fingers) and does so much other stuff it's nuts, he IS the hardest working man in hip-hop. Another super group, if you will, like AotP I think is worth checking is The Weathermen, Tame One, Cage, Copywrite, Camu Tao, Vast Aire, and many others make it up, I forgot to mention them in my last post.
Edit: Don't let my saying Vordul Mega as the "other rapper" lead you to believe that there are more than two members of Can Ox. Unless you want to count El-P, but he's not really a member.

Those two groups might be the most unique out there (The Roots is far far better than J5, to me and to many other people, though.) Maybe check out The Fugees, that's meh kinda similar. It's really hard to make that jazzy hip-hop, most don't succeed. Common isn't jazzy, per say, but a lot of people who like The Roots like Common, and Mos Def, and Talib Kweli.

Any Mac Dre Jedi mind tricks Little Wayne (my personal favorite)
I highly recommend Eminems Infinite album. His lyricism is incredddddible in this (his first album?, back when he was good and didn't suck dick).
Oh and if your from the northwest id reccomend Blue Scholars. There really good, haha but they rap about seattle..

As previously said, both of those groups are very unique. But id say Hieroglyphics is the closest to J5, out of any group i've listened to at least. J5 is all about rockin the crowd and getting their word across, where as the Hieroglyphics have more of a double entendre to there lyrics

Some more adds
Freestyle Fellowship Madlib (beat smith, again if just beats aren't your thing, don't check it) Peanut Butter Wolf (Another Stones Throw beat guy like Madlib) Kool Keith (aka Dr. Octagon) Jean Gray (I'm not a fan, but some people like her, she has a great verse on the last track of Mr. Lif's I Phantom album) KMD (old school, Daniel Dumile before he picks up the MF Doom alias, he goes by Zev Love X in this, and his brother Subroc, who tragically died)

7L and Esoteric... boooooo! haha. Also, the only Canibus album worth listening to is Rip the Jacker
Good list though, obviously I'm not gonna like everyone on it. I also haven't heard all of them (come on, I listen to Jazz, classical, oldies, soul, funk, classic rock, rock, metal, etc. etc. I can't possibly have heard everything from on genre.)

damn, I dunno If I can give a top 5. I tend to change my mind once i listen to albums again. All of those guys are in the tops of my list.. I could have listed hundreds more. Okay.. I guess if was forced at gunpoint to give a top 5 I might blurt out
Sage Francis Aesop rock Ugly Duckling Sole Adverse
and ironically enough I've never seen any of them live.

Ugly Duckling booooo. I also haven't seen many (actually I've never seen any) live. I was supposed to go to the Method Man show when he rolled through my home town, but on the way to I got pulled over with a suspended license and couldn't get in because it was 18+
I'm gonna agree though it's so hard to pick favorite rap artists (any really) because once I listen to an album they go right to the top of my list. Leego's got good shit man, PM with a complete list of artists you listen to on your iTunes or what not if it isn't too much to ask.
...pleaaaase.

Yeah props for Ugly Duckling.
Its not a very inventive choice but Ive yet to find a rap album that comes close to The Low End Theory - A Tribe Called Quest.
I dig Matisyahu too!

The best female rap artist I've heard is Invincible. She's from Detroit and is on 2 cuts on Dabrye's Two/Three album as well as Carl Craig's The Detroit Experiment album.

Guys,
Have you heard the "Headphone Science Version" of Aesop's Bazooka Tooth?
You really must check it out, I wasn't even that into Bazooka Tooth but this is blowing me away. It's very IDM sounding.
The whole album is sheer awesomeness, trust me on this.

Yes, check out "El-P Presents Cannibal Oxtrumentals", it's an instrumental version of Cannibal Ox's The Cold Vein.
Also, Aesop released a "Build Your Own Bazooka Tooth" with just the a capellas and instrumentals. That's how the "Headphone Science Version" that I linked to above was made.

Liquid Swords is one of the all-time greatest albums.
jst: El-P also released a mainly instrumental CD titled Collecting the Kid, it has ups and downs, not an amazing album, Oxtrumentals is far better.

Cannibal Ox is sick. El-P produces some of the craziest beats that I have heard in hip-hop for a while. All of Def Jux is sick for that matter.
A few of my favorite albums are Blackalicious - Blazing Arrow, Cannibal Ox - Cold Vein, Clouddead - cLOUDDEAD, Wu-Tang Clan - Enter the Wu Tang (36 Chambers), Del Tha Funky Homosapien - No Need For Alarm. Those are just a few of my favorites.

I'm not really into rap, but if I had to listen to it I'd definitely say DJ Muggs - Grandmasters (definitely the stuff to listen to if your about cool beats) Immortal Technique - Revolutionary Vol. 1
Thats bout it.

Not to mention GZA is the fucking shit, too.

It's common knowledge that Jewunit is an umemployed drain on society, supposedly attending some university that nobodies ever heard of.
He may in fact, be a literal bum, only able to make himself known to us here by occasionally stopping into dark internet cafes to make a few quick, frantic posts before the owners force him to leave because of the stench of rotting vegetables and desperation wafting forth from his pores.
