foaf's first grow, thai koh samui
    #6415775 - 01/01/07 02:08 PM (5 years, 4 months ago)

my friend's friend has been sending me pics of his first grow. theyre thai koh samui from the fsre. they took about a month to get to this point. the one that has shrooms was dunked in tap water in a tupperware over night in the fridge. the rest were just put in there on the lids. when there were visible pins on the dunked one coming out from underneath, he began to wonder if he should flip the cakes to see if there were more shrooms. after reading some stuff on here he decided to flip them and discovered a couple dozen pins under there, so he flipped all of the caked and put most of them directly on the perlite to moisturize them. after advice from another online community he put them on aluminum foil.
anyway, some of the caps are beginning to open but the shrooms are still tiny, so hes wondering if this is normal. thanks for any advice i can pass on to him.
he says the temp is between the low 60s [cuz of the snow] and up to 80, and the humidity is in the high 90s

Trying keeping the temperatures consistently in the lower to mid 70s if possible (a compact space heater works quite well for when the rest of the house goes into the lower 60s).

It appears there's a lot of vegatative growth on the cakes that were not dunked in cold water, which is likely inhibiting pinning. It's a good idea to dunk all cakes in cold water if you plan on fruiting them as cakes. This serves to both prevent further vegatative growth as well as initiate pinning. Also, birth them with the vermiculite contaminant-barrier on the bottom, but apply a wet layer of vermiculite to the top of the cake. this serves as an excellent moisture reservoir. I've always got an excellent pinset right near the top of the cake doing this (up to 3.5 grams dry on a 1/2 pt. cake, & up to 6 grams dry on a pt. cake.; and these figures are just for the 1st flush) Just make sure to keep the top vermiculite layer moist by lightly spraying it every few days with a 10:1 sterile water/hydrogen peroxide mix. Hope this helps and hope you get good yields from your cakes.

--------------------
Every part of this country is sacred to my people. Every hillside, every valley, every plain and grove has been hallowed by some fond memory or some sad experience of my tribe.

Even the rocks... as they swelter in the sun along the silent seashore in solemn grandeur thrill with memories of past events... and the very dust under your feet responds more lovingly to our footsteps than to yours, because it is the ashes of our ancestors, and our bare feet are conscious of the sympathetic touch, for the soil is rich with the life of our kindred.

And when the last red man shall have perished from the earth and his memory among white men shall have become a myth, these shores shall swarm with the invisible dead of my tribe.

thanks a lot for the advice. he took 4 of them and dunked them and plans to add verm to the other side of those 4, and after he harvests he plans to do the same to the one thats fruiting now. he left two as control cakes. one of them already has a couple of tiny pins so hes just seeing what happens with it..
he also has a heating pad which hes used a few times to raise the temp, but its a little unpredictable.
do you think those tiny little guys are almost ready for harvest? the caps are coming off the stems..

Based on the 2nd to last picture, I would say, no, they've definately got some growing left to do. In the last picture the one on the very left looks like the veil under the cap has torn (can't quite tell), but the stem is intertwined with a few other mushrooms that are still growing. If that's the case, then wait because it's far better to pick one a little late than 3 or so early.

thanks entheogenicpeace, you went out of your way to help us out and we learned a lot from you.
as the veils began to tear on the shrooms, foaf realized that they just werent going to get very big due to lack of water in the substrate material. hes dunked most of his current cakes and plans to experiment with casings on the remaining cakes. luckily koh samui are reputed to be very resistent to contams, so hes optimistic about more experiments and increasing his yields. in his first grow he wanted to go by the tried-and-true method of a modified pf tek, but while it may work perfectly for the author, other various techniques of adding moisture are crucial to satisfactory yields, and so hes experimenting with said techniques..

his first flush EVER would have been about half a gram dry. he munched the majority of it wet with a couple of mostly dried ones he had picked the night before as soon as their veils tore. he experienced slight visual distortions recognizable to anyone who understand the nature of the shrooms, but they would have been unrecognizable to a first time tripper. luckily foaf loves weak trips, and as far as weak trips are concerned he experienced a strong one! he learned a lot about the mushrooms and what they want, and he plans to take advice from the mushrooms since they understand themselves more than anyone ;p he also learned a lot about his life and his friends, and while he didnt really break the threshold of a full-fledged trip, he caught every vibe the little guys were sending, and he rates these as some of the best shrooms hes tried as far as vibes go. his trip was comparable to single gram trips hes had before from commercial shrooms, and he thinks a single gram of these babies would take him beyond what he usually experiences from 2 grams of commercials.

he plans to start some new jars tonight and knock them up tomorrow with some mycellium from the cake that produced the shrooms he ate today (isnt time ridiculous?)

thanks for your help, shaman, and whether we ever speak again or not, your friendship is appreciated.

one love
