€60m worth of illegal drugs seized in 2006

ABOUT €60 million worth of illegal drugs have been seized this year, mainly owing to a massive rise in heroin seizures and continuing large hauls of cocaine.
With official estimates suggesting that between 10% and 20% of illegal drugs are intercepted, the total retail value of the illegal drugs market in 2006 is in the region of between €300m and €600m.
This year’s trade was dominated by record hauls of heroin, with the seizure of about 140kg of the drug, worth an estimated €27m.
The 2006 tally is four times the volume of heroin seized in 2005 and is greater than the combined total for the past five years.
Gardaí believed the growth reflected an increased demand for the drug in Ireland, with new markets outside Dublin.
Gardaí and Customs have seized at least 214kg of cocaine this year and believe that, when all cocaine hauls were tallied at the end of the year, the volume would exceed last year’s total of 229kg.
Law enforcement agencies are fearing a worsening heroin problem in 2007 because of bumper harvests of opium in Afghanistan this year and a continuing problem with cocaine.
“There’s been a huge increase in heroin seizures this year and we are seeing increasing volumes in the seizures,” said a senior garda source.
He said this reflected not only an increased supply internationally, but a growing demand nationally.
“Seizures are increasing. They are small, but increasing in number and in volume, with seizures in Cork, Galway, Killybegs, Arklow, Carlow, Tullamore and Athlone.”
This year saw the biggest haul of heroin in the history of the state when 54kg of the drug was found in west Dublin on October 24. Gardaí and Customs are concerned about the continued trafficking in massive quantities of cocaine.
Michael Colgan, director of the Customs Drugs Law Enforcement, said the number of cocaine hauls were on the increase.
“It’s a big growth area and we expect that trend to continue,” he said.
Of the 214kg seized this year, Customs intercepted, either directly or in conjunction with gardaí, 61kg of the drug.

drug dealers are the good guys! The more drugs out there and the more hopeless the drug war looks the better chances of shit being legalized. Hopefully!
