College Living: On or off campus; input?
    #6403003 - 12/27/06 06:24 PM (17 years, 3 months ago)

I am trying to make a choice about my living arrangements for next year.
Going away to college as a transfer student (junior) I am not sure as to whether I want to live off campus or on campus. I am looking for first hand experience here.

I am not too big on roommates, and if I lived off campus it would be a one bedroom. I am currently on my own (about to move home due to a breakup) and have about 75% of the items I need to live on my own. So its not as if I would have a tough time rounding up items. But I also know that there is more responsibility (or stress, or time away from studies) involved in living on ones own. Is living on campus any more desirable. I know its a personal opinion, but what is everyones opinion that has done made similar choices in their life. I have only gone to a community college, and I know a larger university is a much different experience.

(NOTE)
I filled out some applications today and I wrote that I planned to stay on campus, but once accepted I can always change my mind; RIGHT?

here, only freshman are required to live on campus.

a big question is drug use. if you do anything outside of beer, you're going to want to live off campus for sure.
also if you do live on campus, make sure you get upper-level dorms, so you aren't living next to a bunch of freshman.

Personally, I like off campus housing.  I really value the freedom of NOT having an RA.  Living on-campus can be nice because you don't have to drive to class.  What is the cost discrepancy?  I know if i lived in a single, it would be more than the dorms, which is quite pricey.

Fuck on campus living.  Spend the extra to live on your own.  I like quiet.

Off campus for sure. You don't want to be stuck in a dorm, trust me. Although it's a good way to meet people, you're also stuck hanging around with people you may or may not like day in and day out. Plus, if you smoke, cigarettes or herb, then living in the dorm is even more of a pain in the ass.

The story goes, or the way that I was told
There was a king that always felt too high and then he fell too low
And so he called all the wise men to the hall
And begged them for a gift to end the rises and the falls
But here’s the thing, they came back with a ring
It was simple and was plainly unbefitting of a king
Engraved in black, it had no front or back
But there were words around the band that said
Just know: This Too Shall Pass

On Campus. Off campus living is much better if you already know people, but on campus, its much easier to get to know people and get involved socially.

I would say, spend at least 1 semester on campus, then get an off campus place with a roomate from school.

You don't want to live on campus unless you are absolutely sure of the roomate you are getting. This is the BIGGEST problem with prospective students.

Especially if you're a proudly wierd(different) person like myself, a lot of people aren't going to be cool to live with.

Also, drugs may become an issue. Playing your music. talking late at night.

Fuck it, just live off campus and stalk the dorms on weekends when every1s on their substance of choice.

on campus for the 1st year, get to know people, get a feel for the school atmosphere. year 2 3 4, off campus for sure. lots more partying and just a more "on your own" type of feeling which is exhilirating.

Definitly live on campus one semester. Just deal with it if you have a bad roommate.

I had the worst roomate possible my first semester, and I still made good friends with 3/4 people and had a lot to do.

Basically, your roommate can suck. but regardless even if they suck, live on campus for 1 semester at least and meet some people.

I'm a sophomore, and I have never lived on campus. There is no way in hell I could get my shit done. And, I'll admit, I wouldn't be able to "party" the way I do if I lived on campus.

I vote off

i did the best in school was i lived in an apt by myself. Less distractions, can smoke pot whenever i wanted, grew pot. Got all my homework done and studied a lot. Plus parking was a lot easier and was able to save money by cooking my own meals with an actual kitchen vs just having a microwave or hotplate and minifridge in a dorm.

downsides to living by yerself offcampus: costs more for rent + cable + net + utilities, meet less people, have to find parking on campus when going to class, cant take a nap or retrieve shit easy between classes unless you got a lot of time

i've switched back and forth from on to off, off to on, and whenever i move back onto campus i ask myself, why did i move back on campus again? i was paranoid all the time about my expensive bowl and my bongs, and stash of mushrooms and opium, it wasnt worth the worry at all. i'm in the same boat as you right now though, trying to decide if i want to go back on campus for next semester. my theory is that since i dont do many drugs anymore, or trip like weekly anymore, that i wont have anything to worry about besides pot, and that's not such a big deal. i can always leave my expensive pieces at home.

so i dunno, i'd say if you're inclined to have a drug collection, nice smoking utensils, or be growing anything, you'd be much better off living off campus. if not, then live on campus so you can meet more people.

still so conflicted. I am thinking off campus though. Its not like I won't be involved in campus activities, and I am not worried about meeting people on campus.

Being on campus freshman year was fun as hell.

It is the true college experience...

Yes, getting shit done might be a little more difficult, but if you cant handle the partying/getting your work done freshman year, it is only going to get harder in future years, so you might as well get used to it. You just gotta buckle down when you need to.
I would STRONGLY recommend on campus for your first year!

ive been on and off campus, and to ME the deciding factor was if you will have a job or not.

i have financial aid and loans, so paying a housing bill up front was A LOT better than having monthly bills. Without a cash flow i started to run dry by the end of the semester. Food gets expensive. When you live on campus you get all you can eat meals...good food too imo.

I eat better, can leave for class later, and dont have to worry about money (i can survive off of just a meal plan) when i live on campus.

you just cant smoke in your room.

I also agree with the points Colbadol made.
Except...

smoking can be acomplished...LOL.. It is a bitch, but with duct tape, and a fan it is all good. Duct tape the door shut so no air can escape, then turn your fan on so air is getting sucked out the window.. lol... Damn straight.

Better Idea, go to www.aromazap.com

You cant get any better then a vaporizer... The one problem is creates is if you leave it run 24/7 like I did, it is a contant excuse to get high.. Cough*beforeclass, afterclass, wake&bake, bedtimetoke*

Yeah, that was my freshman year. Party Hard, Work Hard.

Oh, and never have 5 people tripping on shrooms in your dorm room. It gets WAY to fucked up and then noone can leave because everyone gets to paranoid to open the door. Yeah, its bad.

I like living on campus because it is MUCH easier to get school work/homework done. I keep my room neat, and it would be a good place to study, but there's just too many distractions. If I wasn't on campus, with a nice study room nearby, I'd never get anything done.

Also, if you're by yourself, herb shouldn't be a problem in the dorms. If you take some simple saftey measures you'll never had a problem. I've been at it for three years with nary a scare.

For me, a towl under the door, a spoof, and an open window with a fan nearby are my roomates and I need.

I'd say on campus for the 1st year - it's a good way to get to know / meet people, and its handy being that close to your classes.

I did the on campus 1 year thing, then moved off campus (and well, also transfered schools), but the 1st year living on campus was lots of fun even if I did have a few roomate issues here and there.

Having all of your friends being within a 5 min walking distance from your place is handy.
