FedEx Founder's Son Arrested in Collierville
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WHBQ) -- The son of FedEx's founder Fred Smith is facing some serious charges.
According to published reports, 19-year-old Cannon Smith was arrested Thursday night after Collierville Police say they found $2,000 worth of ecstasy tablets on him during a traffic stop.
Smith posted a $7,500 bond.
He is a standout quarterback at Olive Branch High School, and has committed to play for Ole Miss next year.
He has a court date in three weeks in Collierville.
Reports say a friend who was with Smith was also released on $750 bond.

Ole Miss recruit Smith could face felony charge
OXFORD — Olive Branch High quarterback Cannon Smith, who has orally committed to Ole Miss, could be facing felony charges stemming from his arrest last Thursday night.
Smith, 19, was charged with possession of ecstasy with the intent to distribute after being pulled over for speeding in Collierville, Tenn. According to Collierville prosecutor Chris Nearn, it's unclear whether Smith will be charged with a misdemeanor or a felony after five ecstacy pills were found in the 2005 Mercedes Smith was driving.
A passenger, 18-year-old William Schifani, was arrested and charged with simple possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.
The police report was not made available to The Clarion-Ledger. Mark Heuberger, the Collierville public information officer, said the charge of possession with the intent to distribute was determined "by the set of circumstances all based on the investigation there on the scene."
Heuberger said those circumstances could include the number of pills in possession, the packaging of the ecstacy and the general climate of the stop. He did not say which circumstances pertained to Smith.
Simple possession of ecstasy in Tennessee is a Class A misdemeanor, punishable by up to a year in jail and a $2,500 fine. Nearn said he was uncertain what the maximum sentence would be if Smith were convicted of a felony.
Smith's arraignment hearing is scheduled for Jan. 9.
Also unclear is whether Smith will still be awarded a scholarship by Ole Miss or if he'll be permitted to participate in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl on Jan. 6.
Smith and his father, FedEx founder Fred Smith, would not comment on the arrest.
The earliest Smith can sign scholarship papers with a college is Feb. 7. Under NCAA rules, schools are not permitted to make public comments about a prospect, other than to say whether the school is recruiting him. Ole Miss athletic director Pete Boone would not comment when asked about Smith.
Summer Harris, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Army All-American Bowl, said in a statement bowl officials are aware of Smith's arrest and that the bowl has a "policy" in place to handle such situations. The statement did not say whether Smith will be allowed to play, and subsequent phone calls to Harris were not returned.
Smith's name was not listed Monday night on the roster for the game on the Scout.com Web site for the bowl.

Olive Branch quarterback arrested on drug charges
OXFORD, Miss. - The standout Olive Branch High School quarterback who made an oral commitment to play next year at the University of Mississippi has been arrested for drug possession, a newspaper reported Saturday.
Fredrick B. "Cannon" Smith, the son of FedEx Corp. founder Fred Smith, was charged Thursday with possession of Ecstasy in Collierville, Tenn., the Clarion-Ledger newspaper reported.
Details of the arrest were not immediately available.
Olive Branch coach Scott Samsel said he spoke with Smith on Saturday about the arrest, but declined to discuss specifics.
"You don't like to see any kid, especially one that you dealt with and coached ... make bad decisions and get themselves in some trouble," Samsel told the newspaper.
Smith, who is rated as the No. 70 quarterback prospect in the nation by Scout.com, was selected to participate in the Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio on Jan. 6.
He led Olive Branch to the Class 5A state semifinals in 2006 in his first year at the school.
Ole Miss athletic director Pete Boone declined to comment on the incident, saying NCAA guidelines don't allow universities to comment on prospective student-athletes.
Ecstasy, a synthetic drug considered part hallucinogen and part amphetamine, has grown in popularity with young people in recent years.

Easy, each pill was only $400. (By the time it makes it from the police to the DA, the price will have doubled again. If it makes it to court, it will be in the millions of dollars. )

Yeah that's shady..
sucks for the kid, I guess he's a hell of a quarterback. I wonder if he'll be allowed to play in college? I assume so, once his mega-rich dad's lawyer gets him off of these charges

Like I always say, "Take what you hear on TV and read in the paper with a grain of salt". This is a prime example of why the media is so dangerous. Judging from his bond amount it's probably the latter.
Poor guy, he probably had to break into his petty cash to post his bond.

This is hilarious... and to think I'm on hiatius from smoking pot because I'm afraid I might get drug tested by FedEx after having to undergo an FBI fingerprint background check... They should call off all restrictions on drug use by FedEx employees, except the pilots... I wouldn't want a stoned pilot flying around hundreds of thousands of dollars of cargo in a multimillion dollar airplane.

What would also be funny if it weren't so pathetic is the number of people currently in jail on drug charges because FedEx called the cops on a 'suspicious' package.
There is no end to the hypocrisy of the War on Drugs.

FedEx calling the cops on suspicious packages? Must be happening "in the field" i.e. the individual stations responsible for loading the trucks for delivery. I am aware of no such activity going on in the major sorting hub. Too many packages in too short a time. And for too many employees its a second job and almost primarily a source of health insurance rather than income.

FedEx calling the cops on suspicious packages?
FedEx routinely cooperates with the police, allowing them to bring dogs in to smell random packages. They also have a security department that proactively looks for drugs and help cops snare their customers when they find any.
--
Robert Quinn was expecting a package from California last week.
What he may not have been expecting was that along with the package, which was waiting for him with his building manager, were several Boston Police Drug Control Unit officers and federal Drug Enforcement Administration agents.
A security specialist at a Federal Express facility in South Boston found the package allegedly contained more than 100 grams of OxyContin, a prescription narcotic used to treat severe pain.
Police reports show that Quinn, a junior economics major, wasn't the only person waiting for that Nov. 28 delivery.
Later that afternoon, officers conducting surveillance outside his 90 Gainsborough St. residence allegedly observed Peter Giannitti, a junior finance and insurance major, enter the apartment and take the package.
As he was leaving, officers in rooms adjacent to the apartment detained Giannitti, who was also found to be in possession of methadone, a narcotic used to relieve severe pain, and suboxone, a prescription drug used to treat opiate dependence, according to police reports.
They were each placed under arrest and charged with trafficking in OxyContin, a class B felony, and conspiracy to violate drug laws, said Jake Wark, a spokesman for Suffolk District Attorney Daniel Conley.
The charges carry a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison, Wark said.
Officers were allegedly tipped off about the shipment after its contents were routinely inspected at the delivery depot, where they discovered that it contained three packages of Skittles candy inside the package.
Police reports said that, besides a few stray sweets, the candy wrappers contained more than 400 green pills, labeled on one side with the letters "OC," which stands for OxyContin, and "80," indicating its dosage in milligrams, labeled on the other side.
When confronted, Quinn allegedly told officers he knew the package contained the prescription drugs but said he was receiving it for someone else, who was paying him $800 for his efforts, according to police reports.
That someone else was reportedly Giannitti, who allegedly told officers he paid $8,000 to a friend in California for the pills, at a cost of $3 a pill.
Giannitti told officers he received as many as 10 packages in the last six months, making up to $12,000 with each exchange, depending on the shipment size.
While he was questioned, officers searched Giannitti's apartment and seized $17,400 in suspected drug proceeds that he apparently separated in groups of thousands in a safe in his bedroom, according to police reports.
An additional $1,160 was allegedly seized by officers from Quinn's apartment earlier that afternoon.
Robert George, an attorney representing Giannitti, said in an e-mail that his client "denies all of the charges against him and intends to fight the case until he is exculpated."
Quinn could not be reached for comment as of press time.
Both men pleaded not guilty when they were arraigned the following day in Roxbury District Court. They were released on $5,000 cash bail and ordered to return to court Dec. 12.

Moral of the story: if you ship anything that could come back to haunt you, make sure it's vacuum packed and totally odorless.

And that post basically confirms what I said. The narcing, if you will,is primarily going on in the "delivery hubs" where packages are loaded onto the trucks for deliveries, not in the primary sort hubs where the packages are loaded onto airplanes.
Also its worth noting that this guys scheme had been going on for atleast 6 months or more. I'd love to know more details as to why they became suspicious of the package, but alas they keep those things quite well hidden in my experience.
