I don't think I've ever seen anyone else doing this type of lid, so I thought I'd just pass it along. The lid is made of heavy-grade furniture wrap and heavy duty Velcro. You can get furniture wrap like this at Walmart for a couple dollars a yard (plenty enough for a lid). I like it because it really allows you to see as much as possible through the top:

not bad. not bad at all. though, the gloves don't seem to give much maneuverability.

I saw the pics first and then I started reading your post thinking, "What lid is he talking about? I don't see a lid."
As for the gloves, if they don't allow for much movement you can use MMs method of using tyvek envelopes as sleeves:

It might not look like it in the pictures, but the gloves give a full range of movement, and I can reach any part of the box with ease. If there was any more sleeve, it would give the gloves wrinkles and they wouldn't stretch over my fingers which gives me more feel. These gloves are made of silicon and stretch, and stretching a little bit makes them fit a lot better over my hands since I have long fingers that normally do not fit right even in XL gloves.
