FLA: A Reishi Hunt in the Rain
    #5882252 - 07/20/06 06:30 PM (17 years, 8 months ago)

Hey folks,

I found a patch of reishi's, growing underneath a Oak tree, in a lawn.

There were about 100 specimens growing under the roots of just one tree, and I don't ever remember seeing them in such abundance in one spot.

Not the very greatest of specimens but here they are:

These are possibly the medicinal mushroom Ganoderma lucidum:

Definitely reishi. Nice find, too. I have only found up to 5 mature specimens in one spot.
If you don't want to eat them, you could try selling them. I have seen 50g bottles (100 500mg pills) of reishi in herbal stores go for up to ~$23 U.S.
Insane, isn't it? Good money, too, if you know how to do it right (I'm sure "all natural", fresh reishi would go for even more than the pills).

It may sound crazy, but just think of the kind of people who go into herbal/organic food stores, the crazy vegans who only eat raw vegetables and refuse to give their children vaccinations. I bet THEY would buy your reishi!

Thanks for the replies everyone.

These were not the best of specimens. Kind of mediocre.

Reishi's are common here in southwest florida. They can be found growing here most months of the year if conditions are right.

They were put into a food dehydrator, and they are all perfectly dry already.

I've made my own reishi tea one time, and the stuff tasted pretty gross.. Reishi wine is another possibility, or powdering them and putting them into capsules.

The smell of a freshly picked Reishi is something heavenly. It smells so healthy. To get a good whiff of the smell, break one of the caps open and smell the yummy insides.

I have made tea from fresh reishi, and I thought it wasn't that bad. It's not that good, but with a little something it could be made into a tasty health drink.

We use not only G lucidum, but also G tsugae and G oregonese nearly every day. Best in my opinion is to save your steak, pork chop, rib etc bones in the refrigerator or freezer until ready to use. Then, roast on a rack in the oven at 350F for half an hour or until they start to roast and smell really good. Remove and place into water and bring to a boil for at least an hour. Add no salt or pepper, etc. After an hour of gentle boiling of the bones, add your reishi mushrooms, either dry or fresh and boil for another hour. Cut them into slices with a knife or saw first. Drain off the material and use the liquid broth for making rice or pasta to use with meals. This way, you can get the nutrition and medical benefits of the reishi in your food without the bitter taste. The bones will add flavor and make your rice or pasta excellent. Salt and pepper to taste after the broth is made.

That does sound yummy! And I can almost taste in my head how the reishi would blend with the flavor of the bones/marrow.
Interesting, indeed.

If that recipe works (and I will try it), then 5 shrooms for you!
:mushroom2: :mushroom2: :mushroom2: :mushroom2: :mushroom2:

Anyway, here's a nice reishi I picked last year. I'm sure I could've sold this one!

Well the reishi foray got me excited.

Here is one I found last year. They are a beautiful mushroom thats for sure.It is amazing how the stem can get so hard and lacquered looking.Looks like it was varnished.

EDIT:forgot the pictures,hehehe
