Very nice indeed. I am just glad that you didn't have a heart attack when you made that find. The boards wouldn't be the same with out you. Please do provide more habitat details.

Amazingly beautiful finds!!! In my reality that is the kind of find that stops the indolent afternoon presses. *adding my plea to the swell of pleas for more information on habitat and photos*

I don't have the time to write a detailed post right now, but here are a few more pics.
These mushrooms grow from woody debris burried in sandy dirt.
Habitat 1 along the banks of a small streem.
Habitat 2. In grassy area upland from stream, but still in 100 year flood plane.

Those are really nice pics..what kind of camera is that? I'm thinking of upgrading for next year.
Also, it's fascinating to see this in the midwest. It wasn't long ago nobody had heard of that. I remember my first find was like that many years ago. Huge field of liberty caps as far as the eye can see. You never forget your first time
The most interesting thing for me is the surroundings photos, along a creek. Never have been that way, but MJ's page says woodchips, just like out there. It almost looks wild, certainly more wild than many Bay Area spots.
Then again, it's certainly possible somebody dumped woodchips out there many years ago. I'll bet if you stick your finger down below those leaves there might be some remnants of old chips. Are those second growth trees along the stream there?.
Even better, it might be interesting to find out what this area was, say, 20 years ago.
And most important, it looks like a nice out of the way and safe place to pick, someplace you can probably call your own for years to come. Someplace that's not in front of the damn freeway with hundreds of cars driving by and honking and waving at you, like out here sometimes...haha
Thanks for sharing those photos

Thanks auweia It's a Canon Powershot A70. I really want to upgrade to an A620 which looks and feels the same but has 8 mega-pixels.

It's not exactly my first time . There were these:

And these:

But this species is certainly special.

The place is wild. I think it is second growth along most of the stream. There are elms (standing dead and live) some kind of weed tree that has leaves that remind me of poison-ivy (I call it cotton wood, but I don't think I'm correct). There are also some really big sycamores. The place was used for industry but it has been abandoned for a really long time judging from the discarded scraps of machinery that you have to be careful not to trip over. The place has been abandoned long enough to be considered wild. These are wild Psilocybe caerulipes, and this is their natural habitat.

These are growing from a layer of mud and sticks deposited by the flood from Hurricane Ivan winter before last.
I probably should have included more of the stick in this picture.

I was back in there for most of today and nobody came by. Last night some people on a fourwheeler came by and I made myself scarce before they got to where I was. You can always hear them coming. I don't know who owns the land, but it's not posted.

Do they have a very distinct, musky smell?
I think the smell is identical to P. cubensis, and P. cyanescens. A nausiating musky smell.
Can you smell a diference between cubensis and weilii?

Actually there is quite a difference in smell between the weilii and cubies. The weilii smell alot like crayons compared to how everyone knows how cubies smell. So shroomy had you found any back there before or you just lucked out on that particular spot?

This is a new spot for me. Over the winter I drove around scouting new spots and this is one of them. I have another new spot that I am going to check today. It is a very similar habitat, so we shall see.
Why must Bluefoot and morel season also be final exam season!
