The Beauty of Spring (photo update 28APR06)
    #5517340 - 04/14/06 08:50 PM (6 years, 1 month ago)

Here are some photos from my outdoor adventures so far this spring.

This is the first year I have found Verpa bohemica.

There were also these pretty Entolomas.

And my pretty friend who joined me for a hunt yesterday. :inlove:

Here's a shot of shroomydan in his natural environment.

A single oyster. These could be found sporadically all winter in this area.

Some Enoki, also could be found all winter.

Some elegant Mica caps.

The beavers have been busy creating wood chips for my little friends  :mushroom2: right along the stream banks where they like to live.

My friend really surprised me. I pulled one of these Polyporus squamous buttons off of a tree, told her it was edible and she tasted it.  Tastes like watermelon rinds, but the texture is nice when they are really young like this.

A May Apple leaf just opening with some harbinger of spring flowers.

Sweet William.

Silver Maple flowers.

Trout Lilies.

I think this is Gyromitra gigas, but I'm not sure.

Virginia Bluebells

And an Ohio Blue Bell.

Hopefully I will be adding some morels before the season is out.

Peace Love and shroomyness.
  :mushroom2:

Very nice shroomydan. You're lucky you've got a girl that's down with hunting. Luckly my girlfriend is all about the outdoors and loves to go hunting with me... provided she doesn't run into bugs. She found a few ticks on her for the first time in her life and flipped her shit. Is that girl your girlfriend?

Nice find on the Verpas. I've always wanted to find them but I think I'm too far south. Do you plan on eating them? I've read about some toxicity issues with them. Personally, I'd try them after I cooked the bejesus out of them. What kind of environment do they grow in, same as morels?

I like all the other pictures too. It's cool that you actually run into the "false" morels. In the 6 years I've been hunting, I've found 1 Gyromita and it was this year.

I'm surprised you actually found other mushrooms during morel season. The only mushrooms I found were various shelf mushrooms, 2 Oysters and a handfull of Hygrocybe minitula. Morels seem to be the first of the true "mushrooms" that show up in my area.

No she is not my girlfriend, but I think a possibility exists. I think she's groovy.

The Verpa were found growing in the the same type of environment where I usually find morels, they taste pretty much like morels, and I experienced no toxic effects, though my dad did mention that he got way buzzed off two beers after eating them. Hmmm...

I went out today and found some half-free morels, will post pictures when I get a chance. My phone line fell down off the pole two weeks ago, so I have been without phone and DSL at home. The university library is closed for easter break this week, and I'm on dial up at my folks house. So, I wont be online much until the phone company fixes my line. between mushroom hunting and school I haven't had much time to be online lately anyway. Maybe being disconnected is a blessing.

Thanks for the compliments guys.
Happy Easter!

Mm morels are delicious, not 2 weeks prior to spring break did I find a whole bunch on a side of a cliff. I always thought morels tasted like some snack food, sadly I don't remember much of anything these days  :mad2:.

I had the best mushroom hunting day of my life today, and I will be posting some pictures shortly, but for now here is another picture of my new nature model for those who did not see my "Gnarly Tree" post in the Pub.

That's cool.
I saw your thread in the pub also.
Great to have chicks to go out on hikes with you. My gf is one of those who enjoys nature sorts of things also. She usually likes to come with me on mushroom hunts.

When I go to the mushroom hunt/camp gathering, I'm sure she will want to come as well. Only thing is she doesn't travel as fast or far as me. So those days when everything is wet, muddy, or rainy - I find myself going alone. Also when I travel really long distances. Sometimes it just takes some hardcore mushroom hunting, alone, miles in the middle of nowhere to get the job done.

It rained last night and was still very damp this morning when when my dad and I set out for a hunt.

But, by the time we arrived at the southern tip of Wayne National Forest, it was shaping up to be a beautiful day.

[Ohio River, Washington County Ohio]

Right along the river bank I found a few Pluteus specimens growing up through the sand. My first thought was Pluteus cervinus, but they smelled different and were growing from the ground.

[Pluteus sp.]

We were checking around dead elms for morels when I found this pretty patch of Enoki. These are very common on dead elms this time of year.

[Flammulina velutipes]

I thought these primitive plants were worth a shot. I think they are called horse tails.

Eventually we made our way uphill from the river and started to find more mushrooms.

Devil's Urn

[Urnula craterium]

Deadly Galerinas vary quite a bit in the forms they take, and this is one of the most striking. When I first started hunting, I mistook a galerina that looked like this for a Big Laughing Gym. I even chewed up a little piece and then spit it out to see if it was bitter (one of the ID criteria for BLG). It was not bitter.

Deadly Galerina [Galerina autumnalis/marginata]

Deadly mushrooms were not the only dangers we encountered. A skunk challenged me for this massive flush of inky caps. I let him have them.

We also encountered some reptiles who were warming themselves in the spring time sun.

There were lots of beautiful wild flowers, including Virginia Blue Bells. Interestingly, not all of them are blue.

Along the way we found some Wood Ears.

[Auricularia auricula]

And finally a morel! These are Half-free morels. This is the first year I have found them.

[Morchella semilibera]

We also found some of the bigger ones.

Gray Morel [Morchella sp.]

Lots of the big ones! In all we found half-free's, grays, blacks, browns, and yellows. My Dad was pleased.

[shroomydad]

Together we collected 275 morels today, seven pounds of mushrooms. It was the best hunting day of my life.

I hope you enjoyed the show. :heart: :mushroom2:

Awesome! Amazing photography, I can't say enough about the great quality of those pictures.
Great finds too.. that's a lot of morels.
The storms are in my area now. It's been raining for the past two days and will probably keep going into tomorrow. After that I'm going to drive over to my morel spots.
