Washington morels

found these all in the lowlands of central washington today
Yellow morels, Morchella esculenta, so they say. found in a plum orchard a few feet from the door to my old room at my mom's. dumped some morel wash water there a few years back and they've been coming up every spring since. I think this is the fifth year, prolly the nicest harvest I've had there so far. still have more to go pick tomorrow before I drive back across the pass, I bet there's around 8-10 pounds wet total scattered around the orchard, pretty cool.
habitat shot, it's almost too easy
Black morels, I call them M. elata
Half-free morels, M. semilibera
the blacks and half-frees were found around low lying areas in a river floodplain, cottonwood forest
I also found a couple yellows along the edge of the river, so I got a pic comparing the 3 types
then some cup fungi that are good indicators of morel growth around here, can't remember the latin name offhand
and finally some pans, a genus I have basically no familiarity with, so I'll refrain from speculating on the ID . I'm sure someone here knows though
anywho, thats what I did today. already fried some up twice, damn they're good

Cool finds , I'm starting to feel jealous too. .. conditions not quite right for em yet here.
I noticed a lot of yours look quite round and meaty, as opposed to being long and skinny like most of the ones I find out here.

Nice DH,
There are more yellow morels in that one shot than I have found in my whole life. Is that an apple orchard?

naw, it's a plum orchard.
I have never found morels in an apple orchard around here. there were a couple within a few hundred feet of where I was picking up until this winter, when they were torn out. there are also several cherry orchards directly adjacent to the plums where I pick, but the morels only come up in the plums for some reason . I've never heard of them growing in plums anywhere else before, and never found them there myself until I introduced them, but they appear to like it . the original yellows used to 'inoculate' the orchard came from the pictured floodplain habitat in the years after the river flooded way over the top in the mid-late 90s. they grow there rarely unless there is major ground disturbance, like another flood, when they fruit in mass quantities for a few years, then dwindle down in fruiting size until they pretty much stop altogether. I've seen patches easily double the size of the one in that first pic down there after the huge flood we had a few years back, pretty amazing stuff. the river's running really high lately too, but not quite flood stage. if we could get a good chinook wind to melt a bunch of the snowpack soon, that would do it I think. one can dream at least .

That is insane. I'm so jealous. You found a ton of them, and they're not even hard to spot. They're also a lot bigger than what I find.
Very nice finds, DH.

JESUS CHRIST
was supposedly risen today, or something like that.
So no morels were present before you simply dumped your wash water in the orchard?
Good god, man, what a sight to behold!!!!
I love you more than ever!!!!

Nice outdoor grow you got going on Deth. I actually thought it was still too cold for those to be popping up.
Heck, I heard the pass got some major snow yesterday.
I've been playing tour guide all weekend here in the city. Next week, I shall joining the hunt too.
Peace. Stymee.

yup, I lived there for a long time and never saw morels there until a season or 2 after I dumped the wash water there.

I will be dumping every morels wash from this point out on to every Poplar tree near my house (although almost 1/2 of them already produce).
I'm still rediculously jealous, DH. The morels I find tend to be 3 Inches tall max, and about half an inch in diameter. It's redonc how big and plentiful those morels are. My "big guy" this year looks to be about the size of every morel you find... bastid
