Spiritual Masterbation

Do you guys think that masterbating up to 2 or 3 times a day is counter productive toward a spiritual path? I think that it is very natural because it satisfies a simple animal urge. Plus, once you release some knuckle babies its easier to focus on other, more spiritual things. For example, its hard for me to meditate if i havent rid my self of baby yogurt. What do you folks think?

i thought this thread was going to be about psychedelics being spiritual masturbation. that said, yes i feel it is counter productive. at least it certainly was in my case. however that doesn't mean you should immediately try to stop because if you are not masturbating but still craving it all the time that won't be productive either (it may be even worse). for me, the urge to masturbate simply fell away as i made spiritual progress. now i have to force myself to do it. the desire is simply no longer there.

why would you force yourself to do it. If i didnt have the urge then i would gladly give it up.

i forced myself to do it because i wanted to make sure that i would still be able to function sexually even after many months of abistinence. i'v found that after a long break the first few ejaculations are premature but after that everything returns to normal.

but what constitutes moderation? once a day? once a week? once a month? that is such a vague statement. furthermore would you agree that there are some things you should never do (at least if you are trying to make maximum spiritual growth)? i suppose he was smoking crack once a week and wanted to know if this could impede his spiritual progress, would you respond the same way?

Moderation is however much you can do without interfering with other pursuits and duties in our life. If you can masturbate without it interfering with your spiritual goals(as I can), then that is moderation. If you can smoke crack without it interfering with the rest of your life, then that is moderation.

i know what youre saying but i think that definition is lacking something. for instance, would drinking coffee all day every day constitute moderation if it didn't interfere with any of your duties or pursuits?

Whew, that's great! ..::Wipes tears from eye::..
Anyway, I follow the path of reiki. Basically, it deals with the flow of energies in the body. I figure you can look at it two ways. 1) the release of that energy can be good because, like you said, it can distract. If you need nonsexual energy to build, you can create a void in that part of your body's energy system by depleting it. 2) If you need to cultivate that kind of energy then you would want to avoid sex and masturbation. Let it build. This can be a very powerful thing. Especially if you are used to the release. Your body is use to making the energy to be released each day. Then you go for a week without. The build up is huge. You become very powerful when it comes to the base chakra as well as the second chakra up. For example, boxers use this concept before a bout.
And there's my 2 cents.

Addiction can be described as unexamined habitual behavior. If you set forth to do something with a particular end result in mind, weigh the pros and cons, and decide sometimes to do it other time not. I think that might be moderation.

No, you would still do those things. Only now its productive. Perhaps not the peeing, though.

well thats my point, if what youre doing is productive and not interefering with your pursuits is it considered moderation if you do it all the time?

Yes, but that's a pretty big "if."

I wouldn't see any reason to moderate an activity if it was consistently productive.

well in the long run it isn't healthy to drink so much coffee.

Which is why it would not be considered consistently productive, and would interfere with your pursuits, if maintaining your health was one of them.
