Donating Blood
    #5396147 - 03/13/06 06:34 PM (18 years, 19 days ago)

Like I said, I'd do a photo essay about donating blood.  If you haven't already pledged, the thread is here  .  The following holds true for Canadian Blood Services; maybe not the same in the US.

Walking in, you'll be asked for you donation card (if you've been more than once) or for all your vital stats and some ID.  After that you're given the booklet: a collection of warnings and disclaimers.  I rarely changes and isn't worth reading more than once or twice.

Then they'll check your iron, a little stick in the finger, and the drop test.  All this generally happens over 5-10 minutes.

After that station, you're given a questionaire where you're asked about low risk stuff; been in contact with anybody sick, feeling well that day, any drugs (including acetaminophen) in the last 3 days.

After the forms filled out, you hand it to a nurse who will take your temperature and blood pressure.  After you clear those tests, he/she'll ask you the high risk questions.  Stuff like:  In the past 12 months have you done cocaine, in the past 6 gotten a piercing, slept with somebody who's sexual history you don't know, do you have aids, etc.

Then the nurse will leave the booth and you'll be given a sticker sheet asking if you'd like your blood to be used or not.  The reason for this is so that you can still have blood taken and nobody will suspect you're disqualified from donating (a great example of this would be if you had an STD and your work went in all at once to a blood drive: do you really want to explain why you're sitting this one out??
Yes or No?

YES!

Then you get suited up, alcohol and iodine swabs, needle does in, and they take blood for tests (the smaller of the two bags, the one hanging from my arm)  This is for aids, west nile and others.

After a while, you fill the big red bag and they finish you off by taking out the needle, applying gauze, then give you a minute or two to gather yourself.

Then the best part of all.
Juice & cookies.

Now get out there and make an appointment to do the same (if you don't already)!!

I can't donate blood because I pass out when I try, being such a lightweight :frown:

I managed to do it once and promptly fell flat on my face.

I'd like to donate but I don't think they'd be interested in my blood...  :frown:

I've got an extremely rare genetic blood disorder called porphyria which is apparently where all the vampire/lycanthrope myths stemmed from.

It doesn't really effect me at all (lies dormant in males usually) but I can't see them taking the risk.

Blood red eyes, receding gum-line and not being able to go out in daylight might have something to do with it

Shots hurt like a motherfucker compared to getting your blood taken.

I've done it a few times and it seriously doesn't even hurt when they put the needle in.
