I believe it's a disease. But I've also heard it was from a violent youth. Not completely sure which.

Contrary to popular belief, the scars were caused by a disease called Lupus which Seal suffered from when he was a child. The particular strain from which Seal suffers causes blistering especially around the facial area, which when ruptured cause deep scarring.
They not the result of ritual scarification, being bitten on the face by a wolf, getting punched while wearing glasses, or being involved in a motorcycle accident (And they are some of the less bizarre reasons proffered!)
By the way, seal + scar on google would have netted you an answer faster than what it took you to type your whole sentence out.

it's an auto-immune disease.

It happened when Seal was riding his motorcycle to a local cult meeting to perform some ritual scarring. As we all know Seal is a badass so he was riding without a helmet. Having come from straight from a dinner at an expensive steak house, Seal still had plenty of steak sauce around his mouth and steak bits between his teeth. A nearby wolf just off the highway got wind of these steaky morsels and lept at Seal as he sped by! The wolf latched onto Seal's valuable face with its muscular jaws, the impact of which crushed Seal's glasses into his skull. The violent force of colliding with the wolf threw Seal off balance and he ended up having a terrible high speed motorcycle crash.
He lived of course but his face was never the same after that.
