Wow, a lot of this thread described my experiences with psychedelics thus far. I had been getting a little cocky and I knew it, but I wasn't really doing anything about it. Happy ending: I took 4 VERY strong tabs, got my ass kicked, ego loss, full on spiritual experience, the works; ended up with a lot more respect for psychedelics and a much smaller ego.

"Psychedelics helped me to escape.. albeit momentarily.. from the prison of my mind. It over-rode the habit patterns of thought and I was able to taste innocence again. Looking at sensations freshly without the conceptual overly was very profound." - Ram Das

MOTH seems to have it right on point with the proper usage of ego (ego tripping, ego death, etc), and what that means in the psychedelic experience.

It's not a matter of thinking you're cool (being egotistical).  It's an issue of self-awareness and how the brain functions.  Not just the Freudian "ego".
