Wild Bird Seed question.
    #4952907 - 11/18/05 06:33 PM (18 years, 4 months ago)

I followed all of the guidelines in preparing my wild bird seed.
I let it soak for 12-16 hours, then I let it simmer (over medium heat for 20-30 minutes)until I saw the very first seeds start to open up. Then I filled my jars half full and placed them into the PC with the aluminum plate on the very bottom to protect from heat.
I cooked them for 75 minutes and when I removed the jars, approximately 25-40% of the seeds had opened up.

Has this happen to anyone else?
And if it has, was every thing okay as far as colonizing speed?

Colonizing speed does not start untill you put the spores in.

I am sorry I left the part out where I inoculate the jars, but I thought that was evident.

Getting moister content down is probally one of the most important and hardest parts to growing mushrooms.
I asked because perhaps there was too much water in your jars that might have been why they bursted in the PC. OR maybe they had split open during the simmer and then only opened up during the PC. Next time go with a no simmer. Works great if you gonna spawn. If your gonna stait case them then you may need to simmer. But casing strait WBS ins't really the best meathod.

Thanks musher_420, I will use the bird seed to spawn cow poo and straw then cased with peat moss, vermiculite and crushed oyster shells. I will try to do without the simmering process next time.

If you can get your hands on Horse manure use that instead. At first I thought it might be hard to find. Then I realized more people have horses then you think. Just go up to any place with horses on the weekend knock on the door and ask if you could buy some horse manure tell them you will load it yourself and they will almost certainly give it to you for free. Tell them you do organic gardening or something.
If that's not possible there's always Tenn-stud. Who knows that might be better for you in your situation.
The cow manure will work. Maybe add some vermiculite to it also.

1 to 2 hours depending on temp. I also add 1/4 or 3/8 cup of verm to qt jars. This really helps bring water content under control.
