I've been reading about the community project with lemon juice and doing mushrooms. I take 50mg of Zoloft daily and also am aware that SSRI's diminish/cancel out the effects of mushrooms. If I took a normal dose of mushrooms, and a 1/4 - 1/2 shot of lemon juice, do you guys think this might surpass the block? This would eliminate the need to take double dose. What do you guys think/recommend?
SSRI block the neuron receptors in your brain that shroomies affect. So lemon juice would not help in this regard (the lemon juice is supposivly used to aid in absorbtion)
Ween yourself off SSRI (and for the suggestion of the MAIO make sure you are NOT still under the effects of SSRI when taking MAIO (will cause serious problems... it takes a good 2-3 days after you stop taking them to compleatly be flushed)
As someone eluded to earlier, the "lemon juice method" probably works by altering absorption.
SSRI's work by inhibiting the serotonin transporter and presumably, increasing the amount of serotonin in the synapse. The increased serotonin probably results in the downregulation/desensitization of the 5-HT2A receptor. Thus, in contrast to what a previous poster said, they do not "block the neuron receptors in your brain that shroomies effect"; they probably desensitize it indirectly. Also, with the MAOI's, you'll usually need 2-3 weeks to resynthesize the MAO enzyme they inhibited.

SSRIs work by stopping the reabsorbtion of released serotonin. They do therefore increase serotonin in the synapse.
However, why they may diminish psychedelics is unproven. 2 theories have been suggested already, (that they densenistise receptors and that they increase competition at receptor sites) and there is some evidence for both. I reckon a little of both personally, but there's nothing conclusive yet.
As for MAOIs, stay a mile away from them on SSRIs, as combinations can be FATAL. badchad is right that 2-3 weeks is a normal minimum.
As always take serious caution when mixing mental health problems and psychedelics. Don't stop and start SSRIs, or skip doses, a long steady course is most effective. And a little reading on serotonin syndrome is good advice when on SSRIs anyway, but especially if considering psychedelics on them.
