Firefang is growing but cow poo is not colonising. Is firefang worth cultivating?
    #4767477 - 10/07/05 02:50 AM (18 years, 5 months ago)

I spawned about 800g of colonised grain to 2kg of pasturised cow poo (no added straw). There is very little growth but firefang is growing well on the top.

It is now 5 days since I mixed it in. It was not too wet, I barely got a drip out when squeezed. The grain was from 2 trays, one had gone through 3 flushes, the other had 2 flushes. Same strain texan from the same LC but the 2 trays showed different characteristics.

It is kept at 86F constant. I also have another tray with cow poo and straw, it was too wet so I mixed in some sterile dry straw to soak the excess. This tray shows more growth but no firefang. Should I take some of the firefang poo and drop it on the tray with none? Is it worth taking out some firefang poo and drying it with the intention of adding it to future grows?

The straight cow poo tray smells a bit, but it is my first time and I am not sure if it is going off, I dont expect poo to smell nice, it is not sour or fermenting smell.

mid 70's? but it is still colonising, (or trying to). You are saying to drop it to fruiting temps now?

its probably generating its own heat from colonizing. the actual temp in the substrate is likely above optimal temps. feel the container. how him are these containers?

large bulk grows generate their own heat...while colonizing.

your problem with your bulk grow might be that its too hot on the inside.

just a suggestion bro...I learned this when I first tried doing large rubbermaids full of horse poo years ago.
I ended up cooking the shit out of my bulk grow in that rubbermaid...and it was only at 82 degrees F.

this be the one...

I had about 8" of substrate spawned.

Ok thanks, I was just making sure that you read my post correctly. I know internal heat is a problem on large grows but didnt really consider mine to be that big, the container is about 12"x12" the substrate is about 4" deep. It is floating in a tub of water at 86F, I thought the close contact would keep the temp correct, i.e. the excess heat generated would be dispersed into the water.

I will give it a go.

Any thoughts on the transfer of the firefang?

Its been a week now and still only small amounts of growth. Is it worth keeping or should I toss it?

if you are going to throw it out, throw it uner a porch or in a shady spot in the back yard.
