Merseyside (Near Chester).
I've been to a few place said to have Libs recently, but no luck, too early in the season though (mid-late August).
You gone on any hunts yet?

I picked over 600 two weeks ago, we'd had some rain and a couple of cold nights. But I went up twice last week and up yesterday but only found a handful. It's been wet enough, but maybe it's been too mild. I'll probably wait another week unless the weather man forecasts a chilly night. It really depends where you are in the country. If I had transport to get a bit further up the mountains I know there wouldn't be a problem.
Oh well, a little bit of patience won't do me any harm!
Happy picking

I'm from Norfolk too, where abouts you from Chroniffer? Went out this morning at 6:30am to scan my usual hot spots, absolutle shit all, but plenty of fungus activity. I still think its been too warm and dry as of late. Looking forward to next month as I'm sure the libs will be sprouting out by then.

General Finding Tips [Re: GoKart]
#4732878 - 09/29/05 05:37 PM (18 years, 5 months ago) |
|
|
I've been shrooming for over 10 years all around the UK, so I'll give my general guide to what I reckon are the best fields to look for:
1. Mature animal pasture is best - by that I mean fields that have been used for as long as anyone can remember for grazing cows and sheep. Shouldnt be too swampy and trampled, and the edges of these fields are often the richest pickings.
2. There'll typically be several different species of grasses present in a good field with a soft springy underfoot texture - Psilocybe Semilanceata mycelium likes to grow up out of the earth colonise the tightly packed dead stem layer (brown straw-like layer) just beneath the green grass stems on the surface. You may notice 'fairy rings' or circular patches of different-looking grass in fields with lots of 'Goldentops'. They often like to sprout near grasses with firmer woodier textured blades (something to do with a love of tightly-packed above ground root systems in these grasses that the mycelium follows up).
3. Avoid hay meadows - these have probably been ploughed and seeded with grass and are practically useless. You can tell them because of the fact you can see a lot of earth down between the roots and there are relatively few other plants and mushroom species growing there. The grass will not be tightly packed and 'mature' in the manner of the animal pastures.
4. Look out for the other mushroom species that commonly accompany P.Sem. - Particularly the straight and thin-stemmed brown mushrooms with even high-domed caps and a slight white frill around the edge (Paneolus Sphinctrinus). These often come up in pairs and sometimes have a nipple-like bit on top, but they are always dry and never slimy. The other common species are the 'Hay Cap' - this is a yellowish straight stemmed, dome-capped mushroom that often has a black ring around the stem under the cap. When wet it has a jelly-like slimy coating. It like growing on or near animal turds. Also look out for waxy yellow squat (4x4cm) brittle toadstool-like mushrooms, sometimes with a reddish tinge on the cap. You may also see similar brown fibrous brittle flat capped toadstools of similar dimensions in the neighbourhood of Psilocybes. The presence of all of these other mushrooms means that Liberty Caps are just around the corner! Move to the edge of the field where the mycelium would have been activated by the tramping and pooping of livestock over the years.
5. Upland areas are always good - all the national parks (Lakeland, Peak District, Wales, Scotland, Pennines, etc etc. However - the lowlands are just as good ... its just that it is harder to find undisturbed grassland grazed by animals for long enough. Some of the biggest fattest mushies grow at sea level!
6. The shrooms come up in flushes from early september and may continue sprouting as far as december, depending on your area. Keep checking throughout the season - a poor september field may be carpeted in october! The only problem is that the later in the year, the more infestations with white maggots and purple mushroom mites (! more protein !)
7. Whate else? .... Too many thistles usually means poor pickings as does too many nettles (indicates that the ground has been too recently disturbed). Fields have pathces of these weeds and mushrooms seem to avoid them. The edges of fields and areas near gates are best, so long as they havent been too recently churned by animals or people.
If you find a field with these criteria, you should save a lot of time and hit paydirt soon enough

Went picking today in local cow field in staffs, used your advice and most of the shrooms were at the edge of the field. Found some nice libs, but they have now all been infested with lice-type insects, the little bastards! still its nice to know the shrooms are growing, even though its september. last year I never found any until late oct/nov

Had my first pick of the season today have had very little time this year.
Had to settle for a new field closer to home to go picking, wasn't expecting to find much in this field but was pleasantly suprised. Picked about 40 - 50 could have got a few more if I spent more time, think things may be peaking over here right now.
The shrooms their selves, decent sized but I picked around 5pm, there were quite a few that were rotting or drying out.

Hooray!!! At last, another successful pick. I went up about three weeks ago and came back with a load, although I think I was just lucky and happened upon an early flush. After four unsuccessful hunts the past two weeks I finally came back smiling today because I picked about 500 of the beauties this morning Despite going out early they were really easy to spot too since it hasn't rained for a few days now and many had dried out and lightened in colour.
Here's a few picked specimens
And also in the field
And this is where I pick them
It's on a mountain, grazed by sheep, a mixture of short and long grass with clumps of reed grass and gorse bushes.
So if you haven't found any yet, don't get disheartened, the season here has only just kicked off.
Happy hunting and

A succsesful picking session Looking_in, I hope you fully enjoy your crop. Your right to mention to other fellow pickers that the season has only just kicked off, some patches I know where there would usually be a lot at this time, there are very few, if any at all, yet in others there are promising signs. The matter of only a few days can make all the difference, so keen checking!

I live in Norwich, and theres a cow field right near my work, not far from the station, which I go to pretty much every lunchtime. Went on a little hunt today and found 10 or 20 smallish shrooms, although I'm not sure if there Libs as this is my first real hunt. I'll post some pictures when I get back to my yard this evening, hopefully you guys will be able to put me right...

If we want more shrooms we must create the environment by active campaigning and action. Nature supports effort and honest research. It's not enough to moan about global warming and pollution we must do something about it ! For instance; 1. What and how dangerous is a dioxin ? 2. For what reason is the ministry of defence opposing the widespread development of offshore windpower in the British Isles ? 3. What is depleted uranium and how dangerous is it ?
