help on paper on substance abuse

OK, I have a 10 page paper to write on a social problem. I have to examine its causes, consequences, and subtleties. I chose to pick substance abuse because I consider myself pretty educated on the topic...somewhat anyways. I've always done more research on the actual substances rather than the culture surrounding them. Does anybody have any ideas for directions I could go with this paper?
For some reason I think I'm gonna have a hard time getting 10 pages. Any specific links that could strengthen my paper would be appreciated. So far I've only got some basic ideas down and I'm discussing how the problem of substance abuse doesn't lie in the substance, but the people who abuse it.
Then I'm going to briefly discuss the Indian rituals associated with psychedelics as well as the uses of the coca plant and opium throughout history. I'm making sure to distinguish between use and abuse and I'm trying to include a variety of different drugs, including legal ones such as caffeine, alcohol, adderall, etc. I'm also going to discuss how controlled substances such as oxycontin aren't controlled very well if theyre making it to the streets so easily.

Oh yeah man you should be able to get 10 pages no problem. You already sound like you have a good direction. I would keep going and talk about other substances (including psychedelics) throughout history. You could talk about the actual word "abuse" compared to "use" and their social connotations. You could talk about the politics behind substance abuse, the economics, how they all return to impact, shape, and mold society. It's a very fascinating subject.
Good luck

you could mention how an ultra-paranoid approach to drugs, as in for example not giving young teens the facts, instead just telling them "drugs are bad", seems to have the opposite effect to that desired. It's like prohibition. Could also go into comparisons of drugs like marijuana, cocaine, heroin etc. being illegal, whilst you have alcohol and tobacco legal and fully commercialised, plus plenty of other pretty nasty drugs that are commonly prescribed for things like depression, ADHD, and so on. How alot of this is tied up with the individual image of each drug, how the public perceives (or politicians think they perceive) them differently i.e. it's acceptable to get drunk every week but not acceptable to get high every week. Also mention how, despite this, the number of young adults/teens deciding to try marijuana is, as far as i'm aware, growing (at least in the US and UK). You could go into a bit the situation like we have in the UK; where marijuana is technically illegal, but a large proportion of people (i'd guess ~40%) do it at least from time to time, and it's generally a case of "if you don't bother people out in public and don't go and smoke a spliff outside a police station, the police have better things to worry about...". It's a situation that isn't often discussed in public, except maybe between uni students and 17/18-year-olds, but it's there. Then there's the glorifying of substance abuse by quite a large section of celebrities, from hip-hop stars to movie stars to rock-and-roll stars to lads' mags like FHM and Loaded (OK those last ones don't specifically glorify it all the time, and do also carry some of the bad stories, but the general impression you get from them s that it's cool and if you do it you're cool too) Finally the steadily growing interest in more natural sources of various drugs - the "ethnobotanicals" as the very useful umbrella term - from mescaline cacti, to morning glory, hawaian baby woodrose, kratom, salvia, wild lettuce, psilocybe mushrooms + truffles, etc. And the shift towards, for those of us learning about this stuff, a much more responsible and informed approach, yet similar in tone, to the '60s. A prime example being the numbers of people getting into growing the plants for themselves. How's that for starters?

dont forget to mention that any body can synth 80-95% pure cocaine in the kitchen non suspicious things. OK, because you'll end up asking... the basics: all it is is a simple exchange of a few atoms/molecules which are forced to do so because of the heat.
Now, heres how to do it:
3/4 Cup of Salt (Sodium Chloride), or epsom salts (Magnesium Sulfate) is desolved into 1-2 cups of boiling DISTILLED water then you add in your Baking Soda (Sodium Bicarbonate), NOT baking POWDER, theres a big diff. after everything is desolved, let boil while stiring for 3-5 minutes, and then let the solid/remaining liquid evaporate in a pyrex evaporation dish and once dry, crush to a fine powder, as the dried stuff is chunky. it's usually cut 50/50 with niacin to avoid cardiac arrest
now i know its totally off topic, and im probably gonna get yelled at but to bad because it is rather interesting info.

You can't make cocaine like that, I'm afraid. That would leave you with some sodium and something else, but definitely not cocaine, which is [1R-(exo,exo)]-3-(Benzoyloxy)-8-methyl-8-azabicyclo[3.2.1]octane-2-carboxylic acid methyl ester.

I just synthesized some of that 80-95% pure cocaine from non suspicious things like salt, water and baking soda, and I'm snorting it right now. I have to tell you - that shit is better than CP! Just wow! I'll be seeing fairies for days now. Thanks for the recipe! You're like Albert Hofmann! So smert and funney!
