Greatest Songs Not on an Album
#4053883 - 04/14/05 08:49 AM (18 years, 11 months ago) |

What are the greatest songs you know of that weren't on an album? These could be b sides, soundtrack songs, cover songs, collaborations, anything like that. Most people here are probably looking for ones that aren't obvious, so even though Yellow Leadbetter is great, most of us here know it. Try to list the ones you think other people might not know about.

Phish has an assload of songs in that category like Wilson and what not.
I would say Radiohead's "fog" but they recently put a live version as a B-side..

My obscure contribution:
Leftfield - A Final Hit
from Trainspotting.
This song plays on the bus ride when Renton takes his (duh) final hit of H.

State of Love and Trust is on the Singles soundtrack.
edit: nevermind, I thought you were saying not on albums, soundtracks, b-sides, like things only performed live or something. sorry!

Hey man, no need to get an attitude about it.
And you were still wrong: Strangers When We Meet is on my favorite Bowie album. Don't be so snippy.

No hard feelings though, few people know that Bowie track, even fewer know where it came from.

one of my personal favorites...
MTV unplugged Bjork, never released to disc as far as i know, only on dvd can you find it.
the first track "human behavior" is done with a harpsichord is BEAUTIFUL.
Elliot smith doing "chelsea girls" and "blackbird" is awesome as well... one nostalgic and the other a very tragic version )both live tracks).
also two great songs are violent femmes "color me once" form teh crow soundtrack and "eep opp ork ah ah" from the saturday morning cartoons compilation...

The Beatles put out a LOT of great singles that were never on any album.
These Beatles songs below were singles not on any album until they were complied on the "Hey Jude" LP. The slower version of "Revolution" was on The White Album, however. I really don't consider it an album. It's more of a greatest hits LP. Here are the songs......
# "Can't Buy Me Love" (1964) (Lennon-McCartney) 2:19 # "I Should Have Known Better" (1964) (Lennon-McCartney) 2:39 # "Paperback Writer" (1966) (Lennon-McCartney) 2:14 # "Rain" (1966) (Lennon-McCartney) 2:58 # "Lady Madonna" (1968) (Lennon-McCartney) 2:14 # "Revolution" (1968) (Lennon-McCartney) 3:21 # "Hey Jude" (1968) (Lennon-McCartney) 7:06 # "Old Brown Shoe" (1969) (Harrison) 3:16 # "Don't Let Me Down" (1969) (Lennon-McCartney) 3:30 # "The Ballad of John and Yoko" (1969) (Lennon-McCartney) 2:55
There are more greats that never made it to LP, too. Can't remember them now, though.

C and C are pretty good in the right atmosphere.
Number of the beast from the unofficial Spun soundtrack is pretty damn good, although I don't know who performs it.
Dark Star by the Grateful Dead, suprised to be the first to mention it.

"rock on", a david essex song covered by the smashing pumpkins... best cover i think i've ever heard. it was released on "judas o"- a collection of rarities and b-sides. in fact, all of the pumpkins' b-sides were fucking brilliant... those on "the aeroplane flies high", "judas o" and "machina II" are especially notable.

I would say Radiohead's "fog" but they recently put a live version as a B-side..
A studio recording of Fog is on one of the Knives Out singles. Another Knives out b-side was Worrywort, and thats maybe my favorite radiohead song.
