Lame, lame, lame

Seriously, this topic has been covered at length in the past. But let's save the thread and spew some information that hasn't been said before, personal experiences etc.

There basically are two major varieties of Papaver Somniferum: The one is the "Album" and the other is the "Nigrum". It is very easy to tell which is which: if the seed is a hard grey-blue then it is always Nigrum-dominated and if the color is different (say opium brown, beige etc) then it is always Album-dominated. If the flower has a purple heart then it is Nigrum-dominated and if it has other colors (especially white!) it is an Album.

The species used for cooking (some of the seeds on poppyseed buns are still viable and are one lazy-ass ghetto-expedient way of securing Somniferum seed) is almost always Papaver somniferum var "Nigrum"

Nigrum is usually used for cooking, Album tends to have bigger capsules and tend to be used for Opium production.

Sooo... which ones to get?

First of all do not underestimate the power of supermarket spice-rack poppyseed! If you get Dutch poppyseed for instance then you've got a subspecies that is especially bred to yield reliably large harvests of seed per sq. meter in a cool climate. Since the seed comes contained in the capsules you either slice and/or harvest you will get perhaps better yields if you live in a cooler climate than if you would trade for Persian White variety.

Nigrums usually have several walnut-sized capsules per plant, Albums tend to have fewer capsules, but they can be big as golfballs or even (such as in the Giganteum) big as tangerines or tennis balls!
The biggest mistake podpeople make is to think that culinary seeds are no good.

Also do not underestimate horticultural "fancy" poppies! They are selectively bred to produce many flowers, and that means many pods. "Danish Flag" and "Peony" are *Album* varieties with many pods!

Let me name a few "winners":

POPPYHEAD TEA: best kinds are culinary poppyseed and "Hens and Chickens" because you get a LOT of dried pod per sq. meter!
Remember that dried poppy capsules without seed contain 10-50mg standardized opium per gram!

HIGH ALKALOID OPIUM: world famous for its high alkaloid production is the Turkish Opium Poppy, which is Papaver somniferum "Glabrum". If your Opium poppy is hairy, it's a Turk!

THE BEST YIELDER: this is what you wrote the thread for! "the best yielder" means the one that delivers the MOST opium of the HIGHEST potency per pod, meaning the poppy that will get you furthest per lanced pod. A very good one is the "Tazmanian" variety but it is not the best. The best of them all I have never encountered in cultivator discussions. It is the "Ikkanshu", the Japanese Opium Poppy. This is likely due to an acute shortage of Japanese Shroomerites

To give you an idea: Usually an opium pod yields 10-100mg opium per pod. The Ikkanshu can yield up to a whopping 250mg Opium, strong Opium, per pod, ample to put two Opium newbies on the nod if they dissolve it in a tablespoon of vodka and drink it as plain Laudanum

To give more info on the Dutch culinary variety: These are planted in three rows per meter (1ft apart) with 30-60 plants per sq. meter which usually yields about 125gr poppyseed and 100 poppyheads weighing around 1gr apiece which theoretically would yield 1-5grams of Opium if lanced, or about 2 grams of average strength in a cool Dutch climate.

Information gathering is my high: it only costs time but will last you a lifetime

Very, very nice information! Thats something worth printing!

Looks like I got the right ones   I have Nigrum, Giganteum, Glabrum, Danish Flag, and Hens & Chicks.

Yeah it is kind of a rather lame question to be asked, but at least there will be one less person asking the same question   You should get that published on Shroomery, although there is no section for plants.

i agree! great post Wiccan_Seeker.
-

i always see conflicting reports with P.somniferum pod potency variation. i suppose all the different .var's and alkaloid profiles don't help with that?

i have heard pods of the same .var and even individual plant can vary by 10x.

WS: you say 'dried poppy capsules without seed contain 10-50mg opium/gram.
and also '10-100mg opium/pod'. care to clarify? is this two different seed 'treatments' variation?

cheers

Whoops, that was a bit unclear on my part! Let me correct it!

Quote:

dried poppy capsules without seed contain 10-50mg opium/gram calculated as standardized opium with 10% Morphine content. Due to potency fluctuations the actual outpour can vary between 10-100 of raw Opium

I'm thinking about writing a poppies eBook... but then again I'm thinking about alot of things, and if mere thinking made things happen... :smirk:

Thread necro?  :spank:

Run a search and take a gander at the dates.  It becomes very irrelevant especially since info is updated ceaselessly.  To answer the question, you need primarily the species Papaver somniferum, which is the classic opium poppy.  There are strains like giganthemums and hens and chicks and persian whites but these are all somniferum I believe.

You do not grind the seeds either, you just simmer them over water since the alkaoloids are on the seed coat.  If you ground the seeds you get a bunch of oils and other shit that is meant to support a seedling, and you don't want that since it isn't an opiate.

Ground poppy pods are the best, without the seeds.

yes you can make poppy seed tea from the poppy seeds sold in spice aisles, don't know if them being ground makes any difference though...

Poppy seed tea is dangerous. You can never guess the alk content. Its too easy to OD or walk away sober. I can think of safer ways to get high.

I disagree dear doctor ^^ IMO seeds are more dangerous than other sources. Its so weak and unstable potency, its like having a bunch of different unmarked bags of heroin and phentanyl laying around and not being able to tell which of the 2 you're dosing.

Making pod tea is safer, seeds are for planting not making tea off.

Also: Tea from seeds is fucking discusting, tea from pods is pretty ok.

I would add that hens and chickens is not the best for a grower that is thinking about the recreational value above all other. You can both cut and collect opium from a specific pod and make tea from the empty husk(a bit weaker than from non-cut but still potent enough). Hens and Chickens cannot be effectively cut because most of the opium will run down between the "chickens".

As people have said before, please don't consume poppy seed tea. I only used a lb once, and it got me a little itchy. Although I felt like pure shit all night from it. Coulda been some toxic metals in the seed? who knows. Anyways, I personally like Gigs and persian blue. I started a ton of Hens and Chicks this season though, I am excited to see them bloom. Wiccan_Seeker, most of my Hens and chicks have hairs on the undersides of their leaves. I am wondering if this is normal or if my hens and chicks were crossed with some other breed to boost their potency/yeild or something? anyone have insight on this? Next year I will try more than gigs/blues/h&c's.

well my point is this. anyone who is taking opiates should have already thoroughly researched it and know their shit.
anyone who puts a substance in their body and doesn't know the risks deserves everything they get IMO
