I was wondering what shiitake mycelia should look like in the spawn run phase. I am using a 80% oak sawdust / 20% wheat bran mixture as the substrate. The jars were inoculated on 11/21 with a living culture syringe bought from SporeWorks. The entity that is growing in the jars has started to grow in the past four to five days. I am familiar with the cobweb contaminant and at first I thought this was what was growing. It does not have the thick texture of a cubensis mycelia. The mycelia is ropy and fibrous indicating rhizomorphic growth but it still has a whispy white appearance. All of the jars (7 in total) show the same entity, starting from the top and eating it's way down through the sawdust/bran. A 10% dextrose jar was inoculated with .5cc of living mycelia as well and it is showing a large lump of the same colored and textured material that is growing in the sawdust jars. The only reason I ask is that this microorganism appears on all stages to look the same. The syringe that came in the mail, however, had a very thick dark white ball of mycelia that was white and light brown.
Can someone link me to some close-up pictures of shiitake mycelia growing in a bag/jar? Does this sound normal?
The shitake spawn on sawdust I have made did not show much of white mycelium at the beginning. There was just a kind of discoloration where it grew. That started from top of the jar and ended at the bottom. But that is probably only on the sawdust substrate. In liquid and on grain it might look different. Here is a pic:
