Gymnopilus sp. pics repost
    #3251341 - 10/19/04 01:54 PM (10 years, 6 days ago)

These pictures from last weekend were lost in the blackout and I told my sister to check them out, hence the re-post.

These are photos of an active species of Gymnopilus from Ohio. I don't know which species for sure, maybe Gymnopilus aeruginosus. Only the babies bruise blue...

While I'm at it here's some eye candy from earlier this summer. Same species.

  :mushroom2:

Nice gym's shroomydan...
I think I've found similar if
not the same species.. The pins
turn totally blue.. I found some
last week that even the larger ones
showed lot's of blueing... Once again
very nice pictures.. great looking specimens..

Nofindum....

Hey Idk how the hell to use this website yet so I am just going to reply to your post haha. I am sorry if this is annoying.
But I was just out hunting and found some shrooms that I think might possibly be Gymnopilus sp. and was wondering if someone could ID them for me. I am still a noob at identifying mushrooms and wish to learn

I found these growing out of the side of a small stump of a tree.
They had very sticky caps when they where fresh.
It rained yesterday and has been very warm today when I found them.
The spore print is very white as you can see in the picture.

weird that first pic in your second/summer set looks a 'bit' like cubes to me, and that last pic is dope with the bruising pins

great pictures, enjoy those!

It is a bit. As you can see, people start talking to someone who hasn't been around this place for years, while most ignore your question. So it's mostly annoying for you yourself.

Anyway, your mushroom looks like something collybioid. It is not a gymnopilus species.

Haha yeah I figured out how to start a thread finally

I've come to the conclusion that these are Flammulina velutipes.
Are those good for eating?
And does anyone have any advice for finding active Gyms? I read that Gymnopilus sp grow in Nebraska which is where I live and don't really know where to look for them.

Oh, now I remember the thread! F. velutips are edible, but only eat them if you're 100% sure that that's what they are. Gyms tend to grow in similar spots as f. velutipes; the only notable difference is that while f. velutipes also grows several feet off the ground, I've never seen gyms do that.

I'll probably play it safe and not eat them.
I am just gonna use them to test out some drying methods so when I do actually find some active mushrooms I know how to preserve them right ha.

I have, once in not such a wet place, seen a luteus growing about 5 feet off the ground from a wound in a small maple tree, it was pretty weird, cause I hadn't seen it before or since.

Could be.

Check the stem texture.

They are great for eating, if your ID is correct.
