Germicidal light bulb

Hi there, I just remembered that I saw a brief ad in the back of a science magazine for a light bulb that eliminates contaminates such as bacteria, mold, viruses, fungi, and the like. This particular one is a "swirly"-type fluorescent bulb, coated in titanium dioxide, which somehow works to eliminate the contaminates. The science is real: "The system uses light, which reacts with a titanium dioxide-based chemical catalyst as air passes through. The result is oxidation, which attacks and destroys microbes by disintegrating their DNA. The reaction also kills dust mites and mold." I don't know for sure that this wouldn't be harmful to colonized mycelium, but logically, I wouldn't think so. I'm going to get one sometime soon just as an extra layer of protection against contaminates, and as a light source. I'll inform you gas as to it's "effectiveness", or at least, safety. It is expensive - $40. In fact, if anyone else has used one of these already, or is going to buy one, I'd like to hear about it. Since this product is legal, I am going to include a link to it. Otherwise, just Google: "ozone light bulb" +fluorescent http://www.no-more-odors.com/press/index.php

You wouldnt think this would be harmful to mushrooms yet you stated that it eliminated fungi. Do you know that mushrooms are fungi? Are you just high?

The way it works, is that when air passes through the light bulb, the contaminates in that air are destroyed. It's not as if it radiates death down onto something, as is my understanding. Ok? And, let's be civil about this, there's really no need to be condescending when you're trying to make a point.

I have one with 5 spirals, and another with 4.
on the 5 spiral the brand is MaxLite and it's called "SpiraMax Compact" electronic fluorescent lamp 26watt.
the 4 spiral one doesnt have a brand and it's a 23watt.
if theres no difference from mine and the "ozone" one then you can buy 1 off of me

And yours is coated in titanium dioxide, with documentation that proves it kills germs? Or is it just a twisty lightbulb?

I just found some more info about what appears to be a different flavor of germicidal lightbulb, which kills contaminates by emitting UVC (?) ultra-violet light. Perhaps that is a completely different mechanism from the first one I mentioned. Perhaps THAT one would kill your mycelium.
This is not just from 1 website. Just search for germicidal light bulbs. They are apparently used in many different applications, such as in hospitals.

Check this out: http://www.specialtyoptical.com/germicidal.htm
This is the UV-C that emits radiation (which is damaging to the skin and eyes) that is used in a huge number of different applications. I would assume that this one would kill your mycelium right off the bat. I don't *think the first one I mentioned works the same way.
Obviously, no one HERE would use this unless they wanted a real "clean room".

Gloom, the ones you have are just the regular light bulbs that you can buy at wal-mart, not the same as the O-Zone light. You could try to sell the regular ones and claim that they are the O-Zone light, they do look the same.

I wonder if it would kill spores? because you might have somthing here. Like Land Crap was saying maybe it can give an extra clean room, eliminating all contams for clean innoculation. But I dont think it would work that good.

This is something I'm going to continue to research. This may all be based off of the same UV-C technology, which would almost certainly kill your spores/mycelium. But as is said, sterilizing an entire room will always be appealing to the mushroom cultivator.
And hey, don't make fun of my name. I'm very sensitive.

no mine dont have any kind of anti-contaminant coating on it, and it's better that way because that stuff kills your mycel since it's a fungi.. but who cares about these lightbulbs, just use a hepa filter and a 4 flourescent tube fixture

No one would care about these light bulbs who isn't curious if they might have a potential use. I'm more interested (now) in the potential use as a sterilization tool than as a light bulb at this point. It's just one of those things I thought might be neat to check out. Totally unnecessary at this stage of the game, but might have potential applications in the future...

Oh shit! sorry man, that was a type-oh, I just noticed it. It said on another site that it kills airborn contams so maybe it would be safe on myc

no prob, bob. That's what I'm trying to figure out, if the light in the first link I provided (titanium dioxide) uses a different technology than in the last link I provided (UV-C radiation) - or if they are one and the same.

I think all that is going on here is that Ultra Viloet rays eliminate contaminates somehow, and these lights are just powerful UV's I guess

True. I think they just eliminate airborne bacteria, maybe only the bacteria that hits the light. Sounds like it could help with cleaniness procedures though and any help is good help.

Sorry I thought you were refering to the type of germicidal bulbs you posted in the second link as this is the only kind I was aware of. I should have looked instead of assuming but I've heard of those otherones and even had one up until a few months ago when it broke. I never used it for mycology it was actually from my sister who worked at a hospitial and went in my room. This does sound interesting though..
Like they said them mini flouros you got are just plain ones, they work great for growing though, I use a bunch of them..great for all lights too but if they are germicidial they clearly state that and you'd know.
Sorry about the first post I was tired and cranky I guess Good luck and let us know what happens!

my guess is the UV rays could damage or mutate your mushrooms... but -
when used in combination with a HEPA filter, this could help create a cleaner room to innoculate/G2G/agar, etc. i see this as worthwhile.
oh, and i found a HEPA filter for a 10 x 10 room at wal*fart for about $30. let me find the link and i'll post it up... i think i'm going to get it for my grow room/closet.
