Why exactly do mushrooms grow on cow/horse crap?

I have always wondered how mushrooms grow on cow/horse crap. Does the animal eat other mushrooms and shit out the spores? Or is there somthing special in their shit that mushrooms like?

it's just the right growth parameters for them, if the shit is just right, they will, dont get me wrong you'll get alot more mushrooms growing them yourself than running round the paddocks all day! it's to hit and miss with wild mushrooms

It has to do with their pure grain / no fat diets that they live on. This is why it won't grow on human or most other animal's shit.
I think deer, rabbit, elephant, someone said bison, cow, and horse shit works, probably others that aren't carnivors.
As far as the mushrooms growing on the shit, there were probably a few mushrooms growing across the field and enough spores happened to catch the right gust of wind and land in the shit that's shaded by grass, etc and began to grow.

Becuase the mushrooms usally wont grow on any kind of carnivore. Hence the reason they dont grow on human shit. I suppose you could try growing on dog shit but the likely hood isnt that great....

Mold will grow on human poo as well though if we just leave it lying in the corner.
Prisoner, do you know if it's the acidic value of the fat that discourages mycelial growth on carnivorous mammal feces?
I believe that Fred was planning on doing some testing with some of his own fecal material, I just haven't seen any results, or posts for that matter from FF.

i know this!! i read somewhere!! they say cows and horses and other grass eating animals even elephants have stomachs that are favourable to breed spores! the spores go into their system mostly through the grains and straw and grass tht they eat and since these animals dont have any acid in their stomachs the spores are very safe in there and by the time they come out in the poo theyre ready to grow if the climatic conditions are suitable

belive freds project when you see photos, I grew mycelium on a 50/50 WBS/Coffee mix, the coffee was fresh and unbrewed so it had a high acidic value. The fat may actualy be the limiting factor but in my experience mycelium will grow in some very suprising locations... just a few days ago a few of us shroomerites discovered a large mycelial network in a cave along with a single mushroom growing, the substrate it was growing from was a few leaves

IME, mycelium just needs something nutritious in order to grow, not that I'm willing to eat them from human or dog shit but I'm sure they will grow. there have been several companies and hundreds of individuals that have used dog food agar to start and isolate mycelial growth, dogfood is made using meat and bone meal and in essence that is about the same as growing rihgt from the cow as opposed to if poop.

Prisoner#1 So would adding a litte dog food flour to my standard flour mix make for better food for my babies? Sounds like it. Will have to try this sometime.
