Elm Oyster Fun

Just thought id put a up a few pictures of waht became a delicious meal this evening I grew the elm oysters from grain spawn onto a Bulk neglect technique Barley straw (just heat up the water then dump it over the straw in a big bin, allow to cool then drain and use) I use a Plastic Laundry basket from the hardware store and biodegradable plastic bin bags. It took about 1 1/2 weeks to colonise then another 1 1/2 weeks to form primordia. I love these cos they are so meaty an dthe stem rather than being tough is one of the best bits I fried them up with a litttle oil. Celtic sea salt, cracked pepper and poppy seeds all toasted in an iron pan then the torn up shrooms are added. Just befor serving i stirred through some butter. Yum The set-up... Colonising in bag... Colonised.. Pierce with knife through holes.. Ah lovely elm oysters From Below.. and the side.. The next day they have grown even more. The largest clusters in the previous pictures were eaten and what you actually see is the expansion from the smaller bouqets. The yields on the First flush areabout 1 kg wet (2.2lbs). Im expecting a few more though. This is the "Shimeji" another time in shopping bags of pasteurised Oat Chaff - they loved this, but they seem to love everything, paper, straw, chaff, eucalyptus sawdust, Elm logs. There are not "True" shimeji in Australia so the growers who do the gourmet mushrooms pick H ulmarius at this young stage where its has the cluster form, stem and pseudo cap that approximates H tessulatus clusters or with imagination Lylophyllum sp. They undersell this species though as its much better when fully grown, just as its beginning to plane. Heres the same strain (right) on recycled newspaper pellet blocks. And a garden harvest from inoculated Elm logs shallow buried in sandy soil. This bouqet weighed in at 1.5kg (3.3lbs) and kept me going for a while. I thne moved house leaving the logs behind no doubt they are still producing each Autumn (Fall)

Great Post, thanks, I really enjoyed it, and using that bin in that manner is really novel and cool

What medium do you use for agar and spawn. Would PDYA and WBS be ok ?

This time i used sorghum (milo) but ive used wheat, millet and wood based spawns. This thing eats anything
Same goes for agar, I use PDA, MEA, CMA, honey agar, beer agar Vegetable water agar anything i just keep shifting things around.

Mycena. May I ask how you kept proper substrate run/fruiting conditions when using the laundry basket with regards to humidity and air exchange?

It all happens in the garbage bag
I layer spawn and pasteurised straw, loosely twist the bag closed and compress it. It sat like this outside (Autumn here - warm days, cool nights) colonised in say less than 2 weeks. Then i stabbed holes and left it out there until shrooms began popping out he sides after which i brought it inside to take pictures and harvest.
so easy really, just like common oysters no different

Yeah thats me Not a good pic - but thats why i chose it No no cool room - they dont need it
In Perth i was growing them in my back room which has a tin roof - stinking hot in summer freezing in winter They dont care - it seems to be the colonisation and the CO2 exposure that matters more. In Perth i grew them on paper pellet blocks (above pic) or on pasteurised oat chaff in shopping bags whick i puncture to induce fruiting(above pics as well) In the yard they just came up when it rained in autumn. Perth is not cold in Autumn Its a good strain
Ive got a European P ostreatus, Pleurotus australis and soon one of the pulmonarius on shredded Sugar cane tops in smaller white garbage bags First two are colonised just waiting to fruit.. The Pulms are on sorghum and ready to go - will do up tommorrow I wanted to use soy mulch but i m still waiting till its baled up and ready to buy

great pics - they loooik very healthy - ill ahve to give thqat a go using the this tek. Im having a fair bit of trouble with the agrocybe - despite the fact that it fruits off agar, it doesnt seem to compete at all with contams and they take hold all the time when i put it outside....

well i just put the agrocybe on a mix of 4 parts Eucalypt sawdust to 1 part cooked millet. Done it with a few species Pleurotus australis, P ostreatus, P pulmonarius, Maitake, a warm eather P ostreatus, shiitake and the Agrocybe will do up some grain masters with the agrocybe (ive switched entirely from millet to sorghum for spawn these days) and do some more bags and one on Coir as well. Its aggressive on agar Also the soy and millet hay are just in so have to get some - $27.50 for a 4 foot wide round bale or $2 a bale for the smaller rectangular ones - going to get making some strawlogs dry the excess for later use hell maybe even sell some oysters/shimeji locally - no-one else is if it works ill make it the topic of a new thread

yeah why not mate! Very nice. The agrocybe actually fruits off agar second generation - it covers the plate then fruits off the sector you used to innoculate the plate with - quite weird
