Psilocybe semilanceata (Liberty Caps) for New Hunters * 1
    #2644234 - 05/06/04 03:21 AM (19 years, 10 months ago)

Psilocybe semilanceata or Liberty Cap (named after the Phrygian headgear) is the most wide spread wild psilocybian mushroom of the world.
P. semilanceata grows in north temperate areas but it has been found even in Peru, Pune, India and also at altitudes of 4000 meters in Italy.
Liberty caps are about three to four times more potent than Psilocybe cubensis. Required amount for a trip is 20-40 fresh mushrooms or one to two grams dried. Effects are claimed to be very visual in high dosages and very tranquil in their effect on the body.
Liberty caps grow in tall rank grasses (sedge etc.) in pasturelands, lawns, parks, fields, golf courses, alongside roads etc. attached to the roots of grass and never directly in manure (best places to look would be any pastures that have had cows, sheep etc. in the past 10 years or so). Liberty caps like cool temperatures (night temperatures <10C, day temperatures <15C) and a lot of moisture (rain). The best season is fall: from when the fall rains begin until the first freezes. Sporeprint chocolate to purple brown.

Read more about the identification keys of Psilocybe semilanceata in these sites:
Some pictures: habitat

Some pictures: little magic men

For more pictures and information browse through these Mushroom Hunting threads:

NOTE: Never ID a mushroom on its photo only. This is especially true for Psilocybe semilanceata, as they come in different looks, shapes, forms and colors. Compare your finds with the keys in a mushroom guide. And remember - NEVER CONSUME UNIDENTIFIED MUSHROOMS!

P.S. This information was compiled from a number of posts found in Mushroom Hunting forum. Thanks to all the posters, photographers and good luck to You newbie hunters who are too lazy to read the FAQs and/or search the boards themselves! :crazy2:

Nice writeup!

>Liberty caps are about three to four times more potent than Psilocybe cubensis

Isn't this a bit too much?
I'd say more like 2-3 times.

In this thread mjshroomer said:

Liberty caps are about three to four times more potent than P. cubensis. one to two dried grams or 1/3 of a fresh ounce. That could be 20 to 40 mushrooms fresh.

They grow in New Brunswick and in Nova Scotia and P.E. Island.

They grow in Quebec. I am not too familar with Ontario so I cannot say if they are there or not.

mj

YEs they are cool shrooms, very visual in high dosages and very tranquil in their effect on the body.

Oner to two dried grams of liberty caps would be equal to 3-5 dried grams of P. cubensis. On a dry weight basis they are more potent.

Fresh liberty caps can get three off on a fresh ounce and one fresh ounce of cubes is a dose. So both Anno and I are correct in the amound t of dosage.,

And yes. This is a very nice thread started by Ivi

Also remember that both P. subfinmetaria (P. sierrare) and P. strictipes also grow in pastures and resemble liberty caps. And are macroscopically indistinguisable form them.

I live in Maine, which is pretty much the same climate as New Brunswick as it is only about 70 miles away from where I am. Why haven't I seen these little jewels around?

I have a bag of shake that has a few stems and caps that look like that.  I was told they were cyans, I might have to try to get a good picture to see what people think, I guess that probably breaks the rules here, I'll read closely before attempting anything

Someone who claimed to know the picker gave them to me for free, while he was tripping on them..  Never got the nerve to eat them, I don't know if it's the not knowing or if it's fear of chocking down that shake.. had them for 5 months now.

If you read the first post you would have read;
Quote:

They also grow from northern New york to Nova Scotia and northern Quebec to Nova Scotia, P.I., and New Foundland.

They are also common throughour Europe from England, etc., allt he way to Russia and probably in China.

They are also in Australia and New Zealand.

There is also a record of one quite contradictory case of fatal poisoning due to ingestion of Psilocybe semilanceata (Liberty Caps).

There are no llinberty caps oin Santa ruz, especially at this time of the year. But then they do not grow that far south of Oregon.

If they were there then people would have picking them for years.

Iv been wanting to go mushroom hunting now for a couple months since I first started reading up on it and just dont want to be disappointed in the end finding nothing at all, is there still hope? This is the one species I was concentrating on

Hello

Haven't posted long time, but just wanted to let ya know, that I've found several myself this year in Estonia. We found with 2h 30 of them. And yesterday my friends went again same area and found 200 shrooms with 4h. This was after pervious night rain and early morning. That place is visited around 30-40 people in day. Many shroomers for this little area. Yesterday my friends told me that there were 20 people with them on field.

Today my two friends went also hunting and found with 2h only 4. I'm going again in this week and then I take digicamera with me so I can post pictures. I thought main season is in october & november, but theers allready so many. Weather is cold here now. Day 13-18C and night 3-6C. Much rain aslo.

Only suggestion for shroomers is to go and find them. Especially Sweeden, findland, estonian and latvia people. They are allready growing and theres many old ones.

we are finding liberty caps in northern minnesota....small patches 3 or 4 in small area and then some standing alone...caps are drying very blue and the stems a nice blue-green.  I know that information on this website says minnesota does not have active mushrooms but I sure had a good time with these and a few others  :crazy2: stems are long and white drying a blue-green and gills are drying a brownish color and leaving purplish/brown prints

A reliable source says they are fruiting in the PNW right now. I will verify this weekend with pics...I hope.

I am in the central valley. Send me a PM. Aren't you in Salem? I think we may have talked previously.

The report I have is from the Chehalis area.

I went out this morning to a park where there is an equestrian area, and looked around in the tall grass, but didn't have any luck. I think it's a little too dry here right now, but it's supposed to rain most of next week, so I'm feeling hopeful for my next venture.

I understand that P. semilanceata has a sticky gelatinous membrane that will separate from the cap, and that this a fairly reliable key to identifying them. Does anyone have a link to a picture of this membrane separation? Does this happen if you tear the cap, or does it just separate from the top of the cap. I've tried the search engine, and was unsuccessful. Can anyone help me out with this?

I just found a pretty big patch of semilanceata's wish i had a picture. If you notice charcoal grey or a smokey grey colored gills can be a certain way of classifying them. There are many kinds of magical mushrooms though. Best of Luck

Liberty caps are a cold weather fall mushrom. Not appearing in the spring.

Late July through September-October in Europe and until December-January in the fall in the PNW.

thanks ivi for this excellent thread!

it's still some time before the season but i'm getting ready to leave Israel and looking forward for FINALLY having the chance to search out some actives for my self... i never thought it'd be possible but since i'm going to live in spain (at least for a while) this thread will certainly come in handy!

it'd be a nice bump anyway right?

so maybe in a couple of months i can add something relevant

oh.... seems to be the season in Europe according to MJ, it's even more exciting now

this thread is certainly worth a bump :yesnod:

however it is not the season in europe yet, no matter what MJ says... not unless you are WAYYYYY north...

no reports in from the scandanavian hunters yet so the rest of europe please chill for 6 weeks until the cooler weather comes round :awesome:

Marguzz's avatar pic right above your post is a perfect example of the "average" colour if there is such a thing...I have seen way darker like a chestnut brown (especially when very wet) to drying out to a straw-like hue...
But i am not an expert !

just curious, everyone keeps emphasizing that these mushrooms are not the same as the ones that grow on dung, so what is the difference? what are the ones that grow on dung?

just wondering as we have both in our neighbouring field.

Very nice thread, too bad I found it a bit late... but,I've heard there are magic mushrooms in a mountain of my country (Balkans, Kosova)and I'm doing a lot of research on the net to learn how to identify and use them.

I want to be sure on your claim about dosage

20-40?!!  I heard that 2 or 3 fresh mushrooms are enough to take you deep in a trip.
And I dont know the difference between fresh and dried shroms, I think that is neccesary... I dont even know how many dried psilocybes could weight one or two grams... never saw any, but I am soo eager to find em that they haunt me in my drems.

Thank you!

This thread has been closed.

Reason:
a) this thread is five years old
b) there are no Liberty caps growing right now.
