Hello!
Welcome to my first bulk grow! I am using straw that I purchased at Michael's Craft store. I pasturized the straw last night for and hour and fifteen minutes at 170F. This was allowed to cool over night in a garbage bag and was then spawn today.
I used 4.5 qts of super colonized Eq on WBS. I did a total of 9 layers over 4.5 inches of well-compressed straw. The straw was then wraped with preforated plastic wrap. I followed this tek: ShroomGod's Straw Tek
Here are some pics of the work, this will be updated whenever I see new stuff happening.

Did you use all 4.5qts of spawn in the area that your picture shows? Isn't that a little much or are you in a hurry? Either way it looks great.

Yeah, I used all 4.5 qts (I had 6 qts). I am away at school and this will probably be my last grow before I move to a new house and I'll be gone over the summer. So I decided just to use what I had started a few weeks ago. It is only birdseed it costs $.99 for 6 jars.  The faster the better. I also made 4 16oz cups of a bottom verm layer, 3.5" of WBS and a coir/verm casing. I am going to give them to some close friends so they can enjoy the shroom growing experience.

I can't wait either, this is my first Eq grow ever. I have only done creeper and burma before this, but never a bulk grow.
I would have taken pics during the process of putting the straw and WBS together and such, but since it is my first time I decided to be as clean as possible.... lysol, iso alcohol, and rubber gloves.

What was the formula/ratio you used for the moisture content of water:birdseed? I have only used grain before...are they similar ratios? I love the grain but like you, I am always interested in new techniques and styles. Thanks and I look forward to more logs on your part

I just soaked the seed for 8-10 hours and then strained it and washed it off for a couple more minutes. I then shook the strainer to get most of the water off (till very little came out the bottom of the strainer). After that I just loaded the jars and PC'd. I dunno what other people do but I get fully colonized quarts in a little over two weeks. Hope that helps.

Update: April 3
Growth is going wonderfully. Full colonization should only be 5 days or so away. There is a dark spot on the straw but it doesn't smell or anything. Is it bad? Should I do something about it? Remove the straw?

I didn't think you really needed air exchange at this point. The whole straw casing is wrapped in plastic wrap with air holes. Should I remove the discolored straw?

Excellent! Still working on trying the Burmas? Straw was pretty easy to set up, just get a bunch of WBS going, mine is colonizing so fast since I used so much spawn.

As a matter of fact, I have a petri with some Burma mycelium that needs to be isolated. My WBS attempts have been lack luster. May go back to corn with the Burmas.
You pasteurize the straw by boiling or in the oven?

I just pasturized it on the stove in a pot at 170F for 1 and 1/4 hours. Put the straw in a laundry bag. I had bad luck with cased WBS, just kind of putzed along with no huge flushes.

This is only my 4th grow. Don't be scared to trying something new. I never even fruited cakes, I went right into casing PF cakes and have not been disappointed.
The myc seem to not be worried about the discolored straw spot and are taking over it nicely. I would say the straw is 30-40% colonized and I assembled it all only 5 1/2 days ago. These Eqs seem to be very very vigorous, even in the 16oz cups that I made, very very nice string-like growth. I'll update with new pics in a day or two.

Update: 4/5
The spot on the straw turned out to be a small piece of wire that started to rust from the water (from holding the straw together). So I don't think it is a big deal, rust and myc should be fine. Here are some new pics! This is 6 days after I made the straw up on 3/30 (tuesday).

The only thing that I think I would have done differently would be to get to straw a little less wet since a lot of people are saying it looks wet. I don't really see signs of the moisture harming the myc or causing any kind of contams. So really I think everything is going quite well. I should have made sure the straw was more against the sides on the top, you can see in the pic that it leans in towards the middle from where I suffered the plastic in along side the straw.
Go for it, you never know if you can do it unless you just try. That is how I have been doing everything since I started doing this stuff a few months ago. Good luck to you.

Well the straw is about 90% colonized. Now the question... I'll be out of town friday-monday, do I case before I leave? Or do I case when I get back and let the myc get heavily colonized? I am out to the bars for my 21st b-day so I'll check back tomorrow. Thanks in advance.

If it's 90% colonized, you should case it now rather than wait for a couple days. I usually case around 80% colonization just because it's faster and once they get some moisture, they finish up the remaining substrate quickly.

April 8 Update:
The straw is almost 100% colonized so I am going to case tonight. My coir/verm/osyter mix is cooling in the freezer right now. I thought you guys would like to see some pics. In total it took 9 days from when I made the straw up to fully colonize. If you are in a hurry use a lot of WBS in many layers . Yeah, it is a little wet looking, but the casing layer will soak that up and I'll be good to go.

It is about 4.5" inches deep and I calculated the surface area to be about 1.4 feet. So I should be looking at a good yield (I hope). I was surprised at how fast this stuff colonized. I think I am through the (worst) contam stage also. I hope I can get this grow to come out like your Burma grows Jimmy, droooool.

That looks very nice Crazy...I did a full straw grow with EQ`s {print From Jimmy  } and it did ok w/big fruits...Im shure your yield will probably be a lot better, Its nice to see someone do as well as you have right off the bat..

Last pic till I get back on Monday. I cased it with coir/verm/oyster. As you can see it is heavily coir becuase I used all the verm I had left (not much). Pics to come upon my return to school. Have a great weekend everyone!

you should get some great yeilds from that....don't forget to dunk after the first flush..straw can most definitely put out a 2nd flush if you do

I have just returned from Easter break and came back to a bit of growth poking through the casing layer. I have my tub-in-a-tub under my sterilite container, but shut it off over break as to prevent over-colonization. I plugged it back in today so should be ready for lights in 5 days or so. Here are the pics, nothing exciting. I patched right after the pics.

you patch where the myc is showing before the rest of the casing layer right?
this is a great show!!
does popcorn spawn well into straw (i know u used WBS, just wondering)?
would you case with just coir, if not why not?
i have some bulk straw questions if someone could lend me a hand?

Yeah. You want all the myc. to colonize the fruiting surface evenly to get more even pinning. Popcorn does not have as many inoc. points as millet (wbs) so it won't colonize the straw quite as fast, but popcorn gets colonized faster. You should just use more spawn if you're really worried about speed. You can case w/ straight coir.

April 15 Update:
Hey Everyone, sorry for the lack up updates! Right now I am just patching and waiting for my even myc to set in. I am a day or two away from flipping on the lights!
Remeber those cups I mentioned on the first page? I never got them to my friends since breaks and everything else messed things up, so I just kept them. They are pinning right now, I have 4 of them and the pinset is looking very nice. These are Eq just like my straw, hopefully these cups will give me a good indication of what I am in for on the straw.

They are 16oz. clear plastic cups. I have no idea who invented it, I followed no teks, I just made casing like usual, 1/2" of verm, 3.5" of WBS, and 3/4" of coco coir/verm casing. I think they are coming along very nice.

I am going to the store today to pick up a light diffuser panel to make the top of my sterilite into something able to let light in. Lights will start tomorrow morning! The layer is colonized nicely and I cased with a light final layer for the last few spots to catch up.
My cups are almost ready to pick. The fruits are small, but the cups don't have up WBS in them at all. Also I am incuding a picture of my Burma casing on its 4th flush or so. Stay tuned for new pics of the straw grow after my lights are on for a few days.

This evening I went and bought a sheet of fluorescant light diffusing plastic (the ones with the tiny triangles all over the surface). This should help make the light very even over the whole casing surface. I cut it to size, cut the top out, and then caulked it in to place. After it dries I'll put the 18" fluoro on it and it'll turn on tomorrow at 6am. Pins here I come!

Are you referring to the old Burma casing and Eq cups? I water the Burma casing daily but it dries out really fast. I don't really care though because it has never been a strong producer. I just want the straw grow to go well.

Lights came on for the first time this morning. For reference I thought I would attach a picture as to how the casing looks right now. It is pretty even and the myc is just coming through the top layer. I patched atleast 5 times to get an even myc layer.

Crazy what temperature's that tub being kept at? Also how are you keeping the RH up? Or is it less of an issue because of the casing? Also, how much light do you give it per day?

2. Sparying the sides of the tub has not let me down yet!

Thank you sir! I cannot stress this enough to people, I have found you cannot over patch a casing. I patched that casing atleast 5 times in order to get a nice pin set. My last patching I probably patched over half of the casing, but look at the benefits!
BTW, Pins are really up all over the casing at this time, new pics tomorrow... probably.

I completely agree you should patch until almost perfectly even...I think the biggest reason for ppl not getting good pinsets is fruiting too early

people have argued me saying patching is unnecessary and they get nice even pinsets without patching. but i agree you cant over patch, patch that bad boy up until its really even it will be worth it i mean shit, the proof will be in the pudding when them pins mature, i cant wait.

Man shrooms growng is freking cool. Uptade daily if you can, most growers only bother to take pics of pins anf near harvest. I cant wait to get my PC and start my eq!

straw won't give you much of a second flush anyhow,
dunked or not.
the trouble you'll have to go through to properly soak
that block of myc, in or out of that bin probably isn't
worth it.

more spawn is always better than not enough spawn.

WOW nice harvest! How big is your casing? Id just rehydrtate the crap out of it and put drain holes in the botom if you didnt already and see what happens. You can even give it a 50/50 coffee/water re-hydration with almost no extra risk to contam and how that works for you.

Or just drill the holes ahead of time (you should have them anyways for drainage) and put the water in the bottom tub then allow the water to come up through the substrate. This is how i water my freshly transplanted tobaccoo plants so the roots dont get all disturbed from the water from top watering.

I have no holes in the bottom for drainage. Wouldn't that be an easy way to contam? I have no bottom layer except for straw. And I don't have a second tub under it, maybe that is what I need for contam prevention with holes?
So I should drill holes and then put the entire tub in another tub? How much water in the other tub? How long do I leave it dunked?

I put a couple bricks on top of casing then added water till it was submerged...then drained on an oven rack like in my pic

Hmm... My project is like CrazyChemist's... My substrate takes up the entire bottom of the container, and would likely be quite a bitch to remove... So I can fill it with water after the first flush, then dril some bottom holes and drain it into another container or I can just super-spray the casing laying for some nice re-hydration... Dunking it Iamthewalrus style wouldnt work for me... Any other suggestions?

couldnt you just use the colonized straw your dunking as spawn for another grow instead of having to dunk again or wait for more jars/bags to grow?

Gotcha. Should I remove all the pins currently on the casing? I have some that will be done in 3 days or so. Do you find the casing stays together well? I don't want the thing to fall apart on my or anything. One more thing, how long should I soak for? Distilled water?
Think I can get it back in my tub easy enough? It does fill the thing up very snug along the sides.

Yea you should remove all the small aborts on the casing... if there growing pins just leave them, unless your going to dunk, in that case yes clean the casing off. Yes casings stay together very well, there like a block that would take some bad handling to break them apart. There pretty sturdy for the most part, specially after a couple of flushes. I dont dunk casing, i just rehydrate them with a spray bottle until it doesnt soak any water up. IF your dunking, id say that 12 hours woul be perfect. Is the casing that dry yet? Just sqeeze the thing in the tub, it will fit. If anything its only got smaller, and will be not much of a problem droping back in the casing tub.

Cool, sounds good. I am not sure how dry the casing is, but pulling 1500g out of it probably took a fair amount of water. The top layer is lookin pretty dry. Would it be bad to soak if it is still actually wet (since I don't know how to tell of the straw is actually wet). I think dunking would probably be the best for the best second flush?

Yea pulling that many grams of mushrooms probably has taken out most of the water. Dunking would probably be a good idea for you.

Yup, fanned three times a day. The only humidity is the casing its self and misting the sides of the container. I feel no reason to change it. I hope I inspired you to try one of your own, the fruits are worth it. I have two gallon ziplocs holding 4.71 dry ounces right now, the rest were enjoyed fresh and some lost in water weight conversion I think.

With the wet ones factored at 10% I got about 5 ounces dried. I can live with that. I think I ended with about 1600 wet grams, so I am at 91-92% water, not bad.
Dunking as we speak, will remove tomorrow morning before heading to class.

any spawn will work, id use more than 1 cake though. and if your gonna move up to bulk, you may as well move up to grain, birdseed kicks ass, and makes for more potent fruits in my and many others opinions. colonize quicker too cuz you can shake them.

A fan that blows air under my bed, I have the mushrooms on a rubbermade lid also under the bed (obviously). I just moved them all to the dessicant chamber, dry weight will be known in a day! Get the guesses in!

why not just stick them in the oven with paper towels under them set at 150 degrees. That would seem to work easier and take only an afternoon to do..

well i didnt know, some think its a good idea to speed things up by drying pot in the oven too. not like u need to dry it totally dry, you can dry it till its moist
you dry yours in the oven at 150 and they dont lose potency? how can you be sure? anyone else vouch for this method not leading to potency loss? id imagine some psychoactives would be harmed.

I think that 150 is WAY to high for drying. I just use a fan and dessicant. It takes a little longer, but their is VERY little potency loss.

Get all the guesses in, weight will be posted tomorrow night when I have time between studying for finals. I just finished a 10 hour study session today for my organic chem 2 final tomorrow (ACS National Standardized final ). Tomorrow isn't looking any better, but i'll find time.

Flush 2 dry results!!!!
84.70 grams!
Winner: yeehaw with a guess of 83 grams! Nice guess!
This bring the whole project to yield a little over 8 ounces over two flushes, yeah... that is a HALF POUND!
Misfits, you can look forward to grows like this, but don't start off with the teks I used. Start small and work your way up, this was my fourth grow. It took me all school year to refine myself to get results like this. Additionally, I am NOT a pro.

Just to let you all know. This grow has netted me 12 ounces across all the flushes. Just threw it out last week. I started 12 quarts of WBS for a new grow the same way but I will use 6" of straw or more and another tub.
Also, I am not on much for the summer since I am home working (can't wait to get back to school and in my own place) so I'll be in and out if people need to PM me.

just go out to a farm that has horses and ask them if you can get some of the manure for your garden. they are not going to care man, they will be like hahaha suuuuuuure take all ya want! they dont care, i mean your doing them a favor haha.
congrats on the 12 ounces, almost a whole pound, is that what your shooting for next grow with the extra inches?

Yeah, I am doing two tubs and 6" or more on each, so first flush should give me about 10-12oz between the two of them (I got 5oz on the first flush of this one). Maybe I will try manure sometime, I do know some people with horses.

horse shit dosen't need any straw and will colonize real fast on its own(I've never timed but it seemed to colonize much faster than straw)

Well, I read all 12 pages a couple of days ago and remember that this is one of the best and most inspiring grow log I've read in my lurkings...
I'm not sure if I remember correctly, but wasn't there some talk about potentially trying to dunk those enormous casings and attempting a second flush...
Sorry, if this has already happened. I can't really remember and am not in a reading mood, but then again, I guess this will post can also serve as a bump to an excellent grow log that if anyone was mad enough to have missed in the past, maybe they will see it this time around.

I pasturized my straw for my second grow. I'll take some pics when something exciting starts to happen. I used 4 bales from michael's (6"x6"x12") over two tubs the same size as last time, depth should be about 6", spawning tomorrow.

Yeah, I will start a new thread when I get some pictures, after the straw is colonized. I have 12 fully colonized quarts of WBS, 6 for each tub. And yes, price is not really a concern since you get so much out of it. Additionally the bales are so damn clean and are 100% straw only I don't really have a problem paying $20 for the straw I needed for the grow.

I'm no grower, but I've got a suggestion that might help with higher yeilds in the future.
When you dunk, you might want to put a few strategicly places holes all the way through the middle of the casing(with something sterile, of course).
My reasoning behind this is that you got all the huge fruits from the sides of the casing. My guess is that only the outer edges were able to be saturated with water. Poking holes in the middle would allow the straw in the middle to become moist.
Makes sense, eh?

i havent posted in a while but the question here about dunking struck a cord with me. i have a way of replacing the water or providing more water to a casing without dunking the casing and it seems to work very well. i use aluminum pans for my casings but this can be done with any container. i simply put a nice layer of wet or dry perilte in the bottom of the container and then but the substrate on top. once the first flush comes off and the casing starts pulling away from the sides i pour small amounts of water into the bottom of the pan which the perilite will soak up. the mycelium grows down into the perilite and drinks the water directly from the perilite layer. i have actually had shrooms growing right off the perilite. i did some experimentation and added superthrive plant growth hormone to some exhausted cakes and i shit you not i got 2 more flushes from some cakes that were finished. hope this helps..

Just wanted to drop a line. My next grow is going slow since our summer has been a little cool and I haven't set up my incubator. Still colonizing the straw on the double tub grow. I will upate with pics when I case and see some good growth. Still looking healthy.

Update on the second grow is not good. Since it took so long to get the straw colonized, due to low temps, both got contamed so they got the boot. I'll start a knew one in a week and a new thread with it. You have to get the straw colonized fast.
