a fresh one or a dry one?
dry ones can be stored in the freezer in an air tight container, freezing fresh ones i have never heard of but i dont think it is to good of an idea, just fan dry them put them in a ziplock-bag and keep them in a dry dark area.

I was keeping the fresh picked mushies in the refrigerator but I guess the temp was too low this time so a part of the shrooms were frozen when I checked them. They turned blue and start smellin a little bad.I think there appeared a chemical process. Now I wonder :should I cut the frozen parts or just eat them as a whole.(it's like your fingers ends frozen because of the low temp in the mountain)

some of the h2o inside the cells of the mushroom proably froze and burst the cell's walls as the ice crystals expanded from being frozen, thus the brusing on parts of the mushies.
if they smell extremely bad i would cut away the decoposing parts of the mushroom.......or eat them asap!

Thanks Fee to you also but I'm still so curious if psylocin changes (breaks down)when the mushie is frozen because I once took mushies with me when I climbed up a mountain and the same thing happened so I had to toss the whole as I hadn't got any computer.

theoretically i dont see how lowering the temp would alter the structure of the molecule, so i guess nothing would happen. but then again i just failed chem...

Freezing works perfectly fine, ive done it and i noticed no loss at all in potency nor did it decay at all. Obviously because it was frozen. Nothing goes bad frozen. It will have a different consistency but not a big deal. I always freeze instead of drying. You lose psilosybin by drying u dont by freezing.

Freezing will not change the potency, Heat however will.

BTW I'm moving this to General Questions.......

Is that true? I ate some mushrooms that had been frozen fresh for a week and did not trip off them at all. It was perhaps equal to 2.5 dry grams. I don't know how long the person waited to freeze them after picking them though, so it might have had some decomposing before the freezing. How long did you leave them out before freezing them?

I've had frozen fresh shrooms many times and they're fine. I always freeze them as soon as I get home after picking.

Interesting, the accepted wisdom is that freezing fresh mushrooms destroys the psilocybin so I've never actually tried it.

Slow freezing fresh mushrooms is bad.  Slow freezing happens if you put them in your freezer, etc.  As mushrooms slow freeze, the water inside the cells expands as it turns to ice.  The hard ice, along with this expansion causes the cell bodies to break down and rupture.  This allows oxygen to enter the system, which reduces the potency of the fruit.  If you allow the mushrooms to thaw, you will end up with a dark blue/black mucus like mass which has no magic left at all.  If you eat them while still frozen, sucking them down like ice cubes, you may salvage some of the magic depending on how well they were stored away from oxygen.

Fast freezing fresh mushrooms is not as bad.  Fast freezing happens if you drop them in something like liquid nitrogen.  The water in the mushrooms turns into ice very quickly and the cell bodies do not have time to grind each other to pieces.  I am not sure what, if any, potency loss occurs from this.

Freeze drying free mushrooms is good, but expensive.  As the mushrooms are slowly frozen, a cold trap draws the water out of them under reduced pressure.  The cell bodies do not fall apart because the ice forms away from the fruit bodies at the cold trap, not within the fruit bodies.

I personally see no problem with freezing dry shrooms, as long as one is 100% sure they are dry.  Mushroom John will tell you the exact opposite, from his own personal experience.  Since most of us do not have the hardware needed to freeze dry, and there is only one remaining case where freezing may be safe, I would recommend against it.  Store them dry, in a cool dark place... or better yet, eat them fresh.

> Interesting, the accepted wisdom is that freezing fresh mushrooms destroys the psilocybin so I've never actually tried it.

It isn't the freezing itself that destroys the psilocybin, but the oxygen that freezing allows to enter the cell bodies that destroys the psilocybin.  Next time you have a fresh mushroom, drop it in the freezer over night.  Take it out and let it thaw the next day.  You will see what I mean... big ugly mass of black snot.

In my experience, I fan dry them until cracker dry (about 48 hours), then put them in ziplock bags.  The bags I then put in an airtight container that has dessicant packets covering the bottom, and then stick the whole thing in the fridge.

They should be able to be stored that way for months, unless I'm grossly mistaken

I eat mine when they are still frozen. Yeah, if you thaw them the get pretty fucking horrible. Best to just dry them, its not hard.
