best time to pick
    #2376337 - 02/25/04 04:14 PM (10 years, 1 month ago)

Well my second flush is starting and I was wondering when the best time to pick is. From what I've read the shrooms that are picked small are more potent than full grown ones. How can I tell when they are as potent as they will get, I'd gladly chop them small so there better, I don't care about the weight to much since there just for me and some friends. I just noticed my first pin today, tripping this weekend would be sweet since my b-day is sat.

The best time to harvest is just as the veil under the caps break.  That's when they're most potent.  If you wait, they will get bigger, but the concentration of psilocybin/psilocin per unit mass will drop.

Aborts, shrooms that stop growing prematurely, are more potent than their full-grown brothers, but that's only for aborts.  Shroms that haven't become aborts should be allowed to grow until the vail breaks.

By the way, it's generally better to harvest all the shrooms at one time rather than one at a time as the veils break.  Unfortunately, often they don't all grow and mature at the same rate so you'll end up with some vails breaking even as some slackers are still half-way grown.  You'll have to decide based on experience when the optimal time to harvest all of them at once is.

Good luck!  :mushroom2:

What effect does harvesting as the veils break (not harvesting all at once) have on the overall yield of the cake?

Diploid, you said

"If you wait, they will get bigger, but the concentration of psilocybin/psilocin per unit mass will drop."

So the psilocybin/psilocin per unit will drop, but they wont loose potency in just 2 days if i wait to pick them cause i want them fresh right?

no the potency of the shrrom wont be lost but the nutrients in your cake will be eaten up by the shroom growing unecassarally (spelling)
you can store them frash for like 4 days in the fridge in a brown paper bag but make sure they are not touching each other when storing in the fridge

I live with my mom so putting them in the refridgerator is kinda sketchy, hopefully 2 days wont waste too much nutrients. Peace.

Depends if you want spore prints or if you just want to harvest em.

If you want spore prints wait til they open up and begin to drop spores.

If you just want to eat em...harvest right before they open up.

Good luck!~
